PurposeThis paper investigates the development of efficiency and the progress of banking integration in the European Union by checking for convergence among banks of European and Eurozone countries as well as contrasting the results with those of United States banks.Design/methodology/approachInitially, we employ the two-stage semi-parametric double bootstrap DEA method, which absorbs the effects of possible integration barriers in the measurement of efficiency. Afterwards, we apply a panel data model, in order to investigate the process of banking integration by testing for convergence and for convergent clusters in banking efficiency.FindingsOur main findings show that the bank efficiency of the US is considerably higher than that of the Eurozone and the European Union. Although there is no evidence of convergence across the banking groups, our results indicate the presence of club convergence. We also conclude that the US banking system is closer to convergence than the Eurozone and the European Union banks. Nevertheless, this outcome is subject to change in the future due to the fact that Eurozone and European Union banks' speed of convergence is higher than that of US banks.Originality/valueOur survey is unique in trying to check for convergence while controlling for country-specific and bank-specific factors that affect the efficiency of European and Eurozone banks. Moreover, recent literature does not compare the convergence of efficiency of Eurozone, European and US banking. Finally, in our paper special consideration was given to the comparison of commercial, cooperative and savings banks, as subsets of our banking groups.

This study aims to analyze the impact of macroeconomic shocks, such as economic growth, inflation and the rupiah exchange rate on Islamic banking efficiency. This study uses the two-stage least squares (TSLS) method, which is a method with two endogenous variables, namely the non-performing financing (NPF) ratio as a representation of the quality of Islamic banking financing and the operating expense operating income (BOPO) ratio as a representation of Islamic banking efficiency. So that the TSLS method aims to purify these endogenous variables against stochastic disturbances. This study uses monthly data from January 2010 to January 2020, or as many as 121 observations. The observation of data is obtained from Islamic Banking Statistic that published by Financial Services Authority (OJK). The efficiency of Islamic banks is influenced by the number of sharia banking office networks, capital adequacy ratios, and NPF ratios. The NPF ratio itself is affected by macroeconomic conditions (economic growth and appreciation of the rupiah exchange rate) as well as the efficiency of Islamic banking. Based on the above findings, a number of recommendations were given, including the urgency of simultaneously increasing efficiency and quality of Islamic banking financing accompanied by monitoring Indonesia's macroeconomic conditions, so that it is hoped that Islamic banks will be more resilient to macroeconomic shocks and competitive in the national financial services industry.

It’s a common knowledge that every business organization depends on its effective functioning of human resources. Employee involvement and analysis of banking efficiency has received increasing attention in applied economics in recent years due firstly, to the rapid globalization of the financial industry and secondly, to increasing competitiveness in international financial markets. Analyzing the operational efficiency of banks in India to ascertain how efficiently they perform their basic functions. The effectiveness of each organization is based on its performance of human resources. The present study was conducted to identify the level of involvement of employees in order to achieve the effectiveness of banking sector in Ernakulam District of the state of Kerala. For this purpose, responses of 367 employees selected using stratified random sampling from six commercial banks. Keywords: Employee Involvement, Organizational Effectiveness.

Banking efficiency is very important in supporting the success of macro policies specifically, maintaining the sustainability of development that affects economic growth and social welfare. This study discusses the efficiency of commercial banks for the 2015-2019 period using data from the 10 largest commercial banks in Indonesia. The methodology used is non-parametric, Data Envelopment Analysis, to analyze technical efficiency. The results showed that 7 banks had a maximum efficiency level consistently during the study period and there were still 3 banks that did not reach the maximum efficiency but during certain periods or periods. Based on the results of the DEA, inefficient banks in a certain period can achieve maximum efficiency by reducing inputs such as labor costs, net fixed assets, and the number of deposits. This might be attributed that the competition in the banking industry and because not all inputs could be controlled by management, some large banks cannot maintain their level of efficiency consistently.

This study analyses existing literature review studies on banking sector performance. Specially, this research aim is to identify topics of interest and development niche for this vast field. The paper presents a content analyses of 14 literature review on banking sector performance studies, selected using clear and transparency methodology. The content analysis of the papers identified that themes are diverse: banking performance and efficiency analysed using the DEA (Data Envelope Analysis) method, banking efficiency and risk, banking efficiency and competition, mobile banking and bank profitability. Based on selected papers this study identified that in recent years number of systematic literature revie studies increase, in the same time traditional literature review are decreasing.

AbstractWithin the framework of banking efficiency analysis, we propose a methodology for computing unobservable shadow prices for nonperforming loans (NPL). Our approach is to include NPL as an undesirable output variable in a distance function stochastic frontier analysis. We conduct a panel study of US and European banks during the most recent financial crisis by adopting a semi-nonparametric Fourier specification, which ensures convergence to the true values of both the estimated function and the related efficiency. Computing NPL prices has several advantages, such as identifying approaching crises, quantifying the responsibilities of governments and banks for credit risk and determining appropriate regulatory interventions.

Purpose This paper aims to present a citation-based bibliometric review of Islamic banking efficiency literature from 2000 until August 2020 for analyzing the content of the literature and mapping future research directions. Design/methodology/approach Using bibliometric citation analysis, this study reviews and examines a total of 278 documents from Web of Science (WoS) indexed sources coupled with content analysis. Findings The results identified that the growth of Islamic banking efficiency literature has begun to rise since 2008 with an annual growth rate of 12.5% while identifying the most influential aspects of Islamic banking efficiency literature in terms of topics, papers, authors and keywords. The outcomes of science mapping (i.e. co-citation network, bibliometric coupling and co-authorship network) reveal that there are three underlying research streams in Islamic banking efficiency literature: growth of Islamic banking efficiency literature, stability and genuineness of Islamic banking operations and the methods in Islamic banking efficiency literature. Originality/value To the best of the knowledge, this is the first bibliometric review paper on Islamic banking efficiency literature. It successfully unveils the scientific mapping of published WoS documents with a future research agenda also proposed based on the review outcomes. These findings can be used in efficiency-related initiatives by managers or regulators for managing Islamic bank operations worldwide.
