Abstract Termiglaucescin (1), a new triterpene glucoside, has been isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of the root bark of Terminalia glaucescens Planch. ex Benth, together with 11 known compounds, β-D-glucopyranosyl 2α,3β,6β-trihydroxy-23-galloylolean-12-en-28-oate (2), arjunglucoside I (3), sericoside (4), arjungenin (5), sericic acid (6), arjunetin (7), chebuloside II (8), 3,3′,4-tri-O-methylelagic acid (9), 3,3′-di-O-methylelagic acid (10), β-sitosterol (11) and stigmasterol (12). Compounds 2, 3, 7, 8 and 9 are reported from the plant for the first time. The structures of the isolated compounds were characterized by spectroscopic data interpretations, especially 1D and 2D NMR. The triterpenic isolates showed potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.

Urena lobata L. is used in Vietnamese traditional medicine for the treatment of several diseases. Tree roots are used to treat rheumatism, dysentery, poor digestion, flu, tonsils, malaria, asthma, goiter. Flowers are used to treat chickenpox, fever, and mental disorders. Branches, leaves or whole trees used to treat injuries bruises, rheumatism, mastitis, bites. Phytochemical investigation of the n-hexan and ethyl acetate extract of Urena lobata L. led to the isolation of β-sitosterol (1), β-sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), a-acetylamino-phenylpropyl a-benzoylamino-phenylpropanoate (3), quercetin (4), and trans-tiliroside (5). Their chemical structures were determined by spectroscopic methods including MS, 1D, 2D NMR and comparing with those reported in previous papers. Two compounds 3, 5 were isolated for the first time from Urena lobata plant.

One new dolabellane (1) and two known diterpenoids stolonidiol (2) and clavinflol B (3) have been isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of the Indonesian soft coral Anthelia sp. A new compound 1 exhibited a moderate cytotoxicity against NBT-T2 cells at 10 µg/mL, while known compounds 2 and 3 showed cytotoxicity at 1 and 0.5 µg/mL, respectively. Structure of the new compound 1 was elucidated by interpretation of NMR spectroscopic data (1D and 2D NMR data) and mass spectrometry (ESIMS data) as well as comparison with those of related ones. This finding should be useful for anti cancer drug development of the promising dolabellane-types compound.

Chisocheton balansae C.DC., is one of the Meliaceae family plants which is the endemic plants from Soputan Mountain, North Sulawesi, Indonesia. This study was aimed to determine the chemical structure of flavan-3-ol compounds from ethyl acetate extract of C. balansae C.DC stembark. Dried powder of C. balansae C.DC stem bark was extracted consecutively with n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol solvents. Four flavan-3-ol compounds, named catechin (1), epicatechin (2), epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (3), and epicatechin-3-O-gallate (4) were successfully isolated from ethyl acetate extract. The chemical structure of these isolates was determined by spectroscopic methods (1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT, and 2D-NMR) and comparison with previous reported spectral data. These compounds are first time reported from this plant.

The chemical investigation of the crude ethyl acetate extract from Pterocarpus indicus stems led to isolation of a new coumarin, indicusane (1), together with eleven known compounds (2-12). To the best of our knowledge, all isolated coumarins (1-12) are reported for the first time from this plant. Their structures were identified on the basic of spectroscopic data (NMR, MS and ECD) as well as a chemical reaction (Mosher's method). In addition, all isolates were also evaluated for their cholinesterase (ChEs) inhibitory activities, in which only compound 4 exhibited the moderate activity toward AChE and BChE.

Objective: The aim of the present study is to examine the phytochemical components and the biological activities of the whole parts of Onobrychis crista-galli (L.) Lam. growing in Algeria. Methods: The structures of the isolated compounds 1-15 were elucidated using different spectroscopic methods and by comparison with literature data. The biological evaluation of the plant was determined by the in vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The antioxidant activity of various extracts (petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol) and some isolated flavonoids was assessed by using five different test systems, namely, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH), 2,2’- azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), superoxide alkaline DMSO, and β-carotene/linoleic acid tests. In addition, the total phenolic and flavonoid contents of the extracts were determined as gallic acid and quercetin equivalents, respectively. In vitro anti-inflammatory activity by protein denaturation was measured for all extracts. Results: Phytochemical investigation of the ethyl acetate and n-butanol extracts of Onobrychis crista- galli led to the isolation for the first time of fifteen known compounds. The present study reports for the first time the isolation and identification of fifteen known compounds from this species. The ethyl acetate extract had rich phenolic content indicating (31.09 ± 0.40 mg gallic acid equivalents/g of fresh weight), while n-butanol extract displayed a high content in flavonoid compounds (60.70±0.7 mg quercetin equivalents/ g of fresh weight). This investigation indicated that the ethyl acetate extract of O. crista-galli showed the highest antioxidant activity (IC50= 17.13±0.51 μg/mL, DPPH), (IC50= 82.99±2.50 μg/mL, ABTS), and (A0.50= 94.67±0.41 μg/mL, CUPRAC), (IC50= 97.09±2.20 μg/mL, DMSO), (IC50: 36.73±1.17 μg/mL, β-carotene/linoleic acid). Furthermore, the compound luteolin 5-methyl ether (14) exhibited a good antioxidant activity in DPPH (IC50= 06.05 ± 0.15 μg /mL) and CUPRAC (A0.5= 12.57 ± 0.34 μg /mL) assays. Moreover, the ethyl acetate and nbutanol extracts of O. crista-galli evidenced a good to moderate in vitro anti-inflammatory activity. Conclusion: The extracts of the whole plant of O. crista-galli (L.) Lam. showed potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.

Phytochemical analysis of the ethyl acetate extract of stem wood of Salvertia convallariodora A. St.-Hil. (Vochysiaceae), a Brazilian Cerrado species, led to the isolation and full characterization of three new non-aromatic B-ring flavanones (1-3) as well as the terpene mixture of sericic acid (4), 24-hydroxytormentic acid (5), 24-hydroxytormentic acid glucosyl ester (6), and sericoside (7), all identified for the first time from S. convallariodora. The structures of the new flavanones (1-3) were established from IR, LC-PDA-qTOF-MS, and NMR spectral data, including 2D NMR experiments.

Borreria is a genus of Rubiaceae widespread in tropical and subtropical America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Studies have confirmed that extracts as well as some isolated compounds of species of Borreria genus possess diverse biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-ulcer… In this paper, we present the chemical structures of four compounds isolated from Borreria alata, collected at Di Linh district, Lam Dong province, Vietnam. 3β, 6β, 23-trihydroxyurs- 12-en-28-oic acid (1), sodium deacetylasperulosidate (2), 7β-hydroxy-11-methylforsythide (3) and sodium loganate (4). Among them, three compounds (1), (2), (3) were known for the first time in Borreria genus to our best knowledge and (4) is a new compound. The chemical structures of these compounds wereelucidated by analysis of 1D and 2D NMR and HR-MS spectroscopic data, as well as by comparison with those reported in the literature.

Phytochemical study of the roots of Erythrina senegalensis led to the isolation of a new α-sophoradiol glycoside, erythrinoside (1), together with four known compounds, lupeol (2), α-sophoradiol (3), isoneorautenol (4) and D-mannitol (5). The structures of the compounds were elucidated using spectroscopic data including 1D and 2D NMR, mass spectrometry and by comparison made with some data reported previously; the samples (extracts and compounds) were also subjected to antidiabetic assay. Erythrinoside and isoneorautenol exhibited good α-amylase inhibitory potential of 54.6% and 53.3%, respectively, compared to acarbose (72.5%) at 400 µg/mL. With α-glucosidase, all samples showed promising inhibition percentages above 50% at 200 µg/mL. In the α-glucosidase assay, the ethyl acetate extract (65.5%), methanol extract (72.1%), erythrinoside (63.3%) and isoneorautenol (66.0%) had percentage inhibitions closer to that of acarbose (69.0%) at 200 µg/mL. The methanol extract (IC50 = 81.2 ± 0.9 µg/mL) was more active than acarbose (IC50 = 94.5 ± 0.7 µg.mL) in the α-glucosidase assay. The inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase indicates that E. senegalensis extracts and compounds could be used to manage diabetic conditions.

Introduction: Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn. (Malvaceae) is a medicinal plant popularly distributed in Asian countries. As of 2019, no chemical investigations from the Vietnamese plant were found. This paper reported the isolation and elucidation of compounds isolated from the seeds of Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn. (Malvaceae) growing in Binh Thuan province. Method: The maceration was applied to the seeds of the plant to afford the crude extract which was then fractionated by liquid-liquid extraction to obtain the ethyl acetate extract. The extract was carried out by using normal phase silica gel column chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. Analysis of spectroscopic data including HR-ESI-MS, 1D and 2D-NMR and a comparison of the NMR data with that in the literature led to the structural elucidation of isolated compounds. Results: Four flavonols comprising quercetin 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), quercetin 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), quercetin (3) and kaempferol (4) were isolated from the ethyl acetate extract. Conclusions: This is the first time the isolated compounds were found from the seeds of this plant.
