Methyltrimethoxysilane has been used as a base in the formation of transparent sol-gel coatings on glass substrates. Several types of alcohol were used as solvents in order to obtain the highest transparency and scratch hardness of the film. The coating cures at room temperature (26∘C). The clarity of the coated film on the glass substrate was measured using haze meter. The best formulation based on the lowest haze values and light diffusion is the ratio of 1 : 1 trimethoxy silane to N-propanol. The haze value obtained for this system is 0.86, and the light diffusion was measured at 0.77%. Tack-free time and hardness were within acceptable value. Nanoparticles of silver, zinc oxide, and titanium dioxide were incorporated into the coating system from 0.5% to 2.5% by weight, and the haze values of the dried film were measured. The highest transparency was obtained from the samples that were mixed with 0.5% silver. The haze value for this sample is of 0.5.

This article describes the modification of UV-curable coatings with silicon aluminum oxynitride (Sialon) and aluminum oxide (Alu C), which improve the hydrophobicity of the coating surface and the scratch hardness. The contact angle is greater due to surface roughness being enhanced with inorganic fillers. Improved scratch resistance results from the formation of a sliding layer triggered by the diffusion of Sialon or alumina on the coating surface. One can observed an increase in the surface hydrophobicity as well as in the scratch hardness (up to 100%) when small amounts (5 wt.%) of the inorganic compounds are added. Imaging microscopies, i.e., SEM, OM, and AFM (with nanoscopic Young’s modulus determination), revealed the good distribution of both types of fillers in the studied matrix.

Bamboo Fibre

Bamboo fibre has been used as reinforcement in epoxy. The influence of bamboo fibres orientation on the scratch characteristics has been studied by single pass scratching action and evaluated in terms of scratch force and scratch hardness. The composites are prepared for three different fibre orientations, longitudinal, transverse and 10 mm random. Five values of applied load (2 N, 5 N, 10 N, 12 N, 15 N) and two scratching speeds (5.6 mm s−1, 11.2 mm s−1) are considered. The results revealed that the introduction of bamboo fibres tends to increase the scratch force for all composites considered except for longitudinal orientated fibre composite. The scratch hardness shows improvement when bamboo fibre is introduced, except for the longitudinal case. The best result for scratch hardness is exhibited by transversely orientated bamboo fibre reinforced epoxy corresponding to 35 % improvement.

Ni-P chemical coatings have been used to prevent wear, corrosion and as an alternative for hard chromium, since the latter's deposition processing is very harmful to the human health and the environment. In the present paper, Ni-P coatings with 8 and 10% P were deposited in steel AISI 1020 and thermally treated. Ni-1wt%P coatings with incorporation of hard particles of Al2O3 were also investigated. The microstructure and phase relationships were analyzed and correlated with the fracture toughness and scratch hardness of the coatings.The results show that the fracture toughness of the coating was smaller when thermally treated at 400°C for 1 hour and the scratch hardness reached a peak in this temperature. The relation of chemical composition and microstructure with mechanical properties of Ni-P coatings is presented. The phosphorus contents, the crystallization, and the incorporation of hard particles in the coatings change the values of toughness fracture and scratch hardness.
