Design and Implementation of Z-Source Inverter by Simple Boost Control Technique for Laboratory Scale Micro-Hydro Power Plant Application

In a power plant such as micro-hydropower (MHP), an induction generator (IG) is usually employed to produce electrical power. Therefore, an inverter is needed to deliver it with high efficiency. Z-source inverter (ZSI) has been introduced as a topology with many advantages over conventional inverters. This research aims to investigate the performance of ZSI based simple boost control (SBC) in laboratory-scale MHP systems using a rewinding induction generator. This research has been conducted both from simulations and experiments. Based on the result, the waveform characteristic and value of ZSI are close to the desired design. A shoot-through duty ratio of 17% can reach 60 Vrms output voltage, and this condition has a conversion ratio of about 2.05 times. Also, SBC can significantly reduce the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). ZSI efficiency has a value of 84.78% at 50% of rating load 100 W and an average value of 80%. Compared to the previous study, the proposed design has more economical with the same component for the higher rating power. Moreover, it has a smoother and entire output waveform of the voltage.

The paper ‘Performance Analysis of Microcontroller based Electronic Load Controller’ is an approach for design, fabrication and performance analysis of microcontroller based ELC for 300 Watt Pico hydro controller. Electronic Load Controller (ELC) is an approach for regulating total power in the system with Pico-hydro power plant. The paper presents a unique method to maintain the system performance by regulating the generated power. The system voltage and current is measured by microcontroller to calculate the consumer power. Based upon the consumer power the dump power is varied accordingly. The performance analysis of ELC unit was done with power source from Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) grid line as well as with separately excited induction generator under various loading conditions. Pump as turbine (PAT) is a type of micro hydro power plant, which uses a commercial pump as a turbine in order to generate electricity. Most of PAT facilities used centrifugal pump. The main component of the pump is impeller, which commonly produced by using casting process. However, this paper describes a manufacturing process to produce PAT impeller by using machining process. Four impellers were produced from two variations of materials (brass and AA-7075), each with 5 and 6 blades. The impellers were tested in a laboratory scale PAT power-plant facility, and the performance of each impeller was compared to its original impeller. The experiment results show that the impeller with 6 blades made of brass material improves 48.9% of power generated.

Abstract This research article represents new direct ac to ac power transformation topology for a three to five-phase. The power conversion process is conducted by quasi z source direct matrix converter (QZSDMC). It’s designed by a conventional direct matrix converter (DMC) and a quasi Z-source impedance network is connected in series with each other. The proposed QZSDMC has input as three phases consist of constant voltage & constant frequency and the output as five-phase variable voltage & frequencies ac power fed to the stand-alone system. It has bidirectional operation capability and buck-boost operation with a minimum number of switches. The voltage transferal ratio is organized by its shoot-through duty ratio value. This research article put forward a new control technique based on the direct duty ratio(DDR) pulse width modulation(PWM). The suggested technique is limited here is only for an odd number of output phases and not applied to the even number of output phases. This article represents the effective working principle of the suggested system in detail and it is validated using MATLAB simulation and an experimental setup. The proposed QZSDMC topology can overcome the voltage gain limitation and attains buck and boost conditions in all four quadrant modes. It has more reliability, high efficiency and low cost related with a conventional back-to-back converter.

An adjustable speed drive creates the harmonics. The novel current injection circuit does not need any additional active devices. With the significant reduction in current harmonics, the AC input line current is sinusoidal. The ZVS technique is used for all the switches operation. The rectifier diodes are by soft switching. The output voltage regulated by fixed duty ratio with varying switching frequency. The advantages of proposed AC-DC-AC systems are low price, compact, high efficiency, and simplicity. Nine level diode clamped inverter produces the voltage harmonics of 8.75%. The Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of input current is as low as 7.72 % and power factor as high as 0.99. Theoretical results are verified initially through PSIM simulation and validated with an experimental prototype of 2.5Kw.

Portrait of the use of electrical energy used in textileindustry supplied from PT.PLN (Persero) with the power contract for 23000 kVAand POJ Power (Mini Hydro Power Plant, Jatiluhur) with installed capacity of5800 kVA. Especially for electric energy supplied from POJ Power, status ofelectricity continues to be a contract with the manager of POJ Power Jatiluhur.Based on the results of measurement of power quality with PQA Hioki 3197 is asdescribed in the previous section, it can be seen that: (a) Voltage magnitude atsome of the panel is high (about 250 V), (b) The power factor is very low, (c)Generally, voltage and current THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) is very high.Kata kunci: energi, listrik, penghematan, filter harmonik, faktor daya
