Small fishermen are known for being very dependent on fluctuating fish resources and the nature of open access fisheries which together cause resource degradation, poverty and marginalization. The problems of small-scale fisheries include low economic performance and limited ability or expertise in facing global pressure, including climate change. Based on the problems faced by small fishermen as described, it is certainly a separate danger on the fishermen's livelihood system which causes the livelihoods of small fishermen to be more vulnerable. The purpose of this study was to analyze the level of vulnerability of the livelihoods of small fishermen’s households. This research used quantitative methods supported by qualitative data. The study was conducted in Muarareja Sub-Districts, Tegal City, Central Java. This study was conducted using a livelihood vulnerability index questionnaire and in-depth interviews. Data was collected from forty respondents. This study found the fact that small scale fishermen both top and bottom layer in Muarareja village in which this study was conducted was not too vulnerable (resilient). However, they have a fairly good adaptive capacity with the use of capacity by using the livelihood capital optimally upper layer fishermen tend to use physical and financial capital to carry out exploitation and spatial strategies. On the other hand, the lower layers of fishermen mostly use their social capital such as affiliation with groups, high trust and patron-client systems based on moral economy.

Abstract This study evaluates the fishing pressure exerted by the most common recreational and professional, small-scale fishing practices on vulnerable target and bycatch species in coastal and offshore waters of the western Mediterranean. By combining multiple data sources, we assembled a unique dataset on catches at multiple sites in these areas by recreational (RF) and small-scale fisheries (SSF), covering the period from 1997 to 2015. Furthermore, a framework with which to identify the vulnerable species among all the species caught is provided; it is based on the IUCN Red List, international conventions for the protection of flora and fauna, the Habitats Directive and the intrinsic vulnerability index of marine fish. Overall, about a quarter of exploited species targeted by SSF and RF in coastal waters were vulnerable, making up nearly 50% of the total SSF catch and nearly 20% of the total recreational catch. In offshore waters, 100% of the RF and SSF catch was made up of vulnerable species. Among the species caught as bycatch in both areas by SSF and RF, there was a total of 27 vulnerable vertebrate species, which included birds, cetaceans, elasmobranchs and sea turtles. Our results highlight the need to differentiate between different fishing methods or gears when studying the fishing impacts on vulnerable species. The results also indicate that, although RF and SSF are often considered to have a relatively low ecological impact, a range of different fishing methods are affecting vulnerable species in coastal or offshore waters in the western Mediterranean Sea, be they targeted or taken unintentionally as bycatch.

The society of Karimunjawa Island is one of a highly enticing tourism destination that maintains the rich practice of artisanal fisheries based on traditional culture and people consensus. This study focuses on artisanal fisheries conducted by Bugis and Bajau nomad descent. Thus, it examines the pattern and dynamics of Bugis and Bajau artisanal fisheries culture in Karimunjawa. They perform alternate short range and nomadic fishing, as well as fishing for market supplies nor solely domestic supplies in which consider ecological conservation and sustain tourism. By means of qualitative method through literature studies and interviews, this research offers case study-based solution to support Sustainable Development Goals number 14, Life Below Water, in which unfolds the method of the Karimunjawa Bugis and Bajau style of artisanal or small scale fisheries through selective fishing gears for subsistent purpose. This research concludes that Bugis and Bajau artisanal fisheries result to minimized exploitation as well as mindful fisheries that preserves underwater biodiversity and supports Life Below Water, which eventually engenderrs cultural-based sustainable tourism in Karimunjawa Island, Jepara regency, Central Java, Indonesia.

AbstractThe path to sustainable small-scale fisheries (SSF) is based on multiple learning processes that must transcend generational changes. To understand young leaders from communities with sustainable SSF management practices in Mexico, we used in-depth interviews to identify their shared motivations and perceptions for accepting their fishing heritage. These possible future decision-makers act as agents of change due to their organizational and technological abilities. However, young people are currently at a crossroads. Many inherited a passion for the sea and want to improve and diversify the fishing sector, yet young leaders do not want to accept a legacy of complicated socioenvironmental conditions that can limit their futures. These future leaders are especially concerned by the uncertainty caused by climate change. If fishing and generational change are not valued in planning processes, the continuity of fisheries, the success of conservation actions, and the lifestyles of young fishers will remain uncertain. Neritic tuna are mainly caught by coastal fisheries, including small scale fisheries and artisanal fisheries. The continuous absence of proper management for neritic tuna, will result in a decline in the stock of fish. This study aims to analyze the sustainability of neritic tuna species by analyzing the productivity and susceptibility (PSA). The research was conducted from February to May 2016 in Palabuhanratu waters. Vulnerability indexs for narrow-barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) 1.25, frigate tuna (Auxis thazard) 1.37, longtail tuna (Thunnus tonggol) 0.91, kawakawa (Euthynnus affinis) 1.49, and bullet tuna (Auxis rochei) 1.41. These vulnerability indexs shows that level of vulnerability for overfishing for neritic tuna is low because the vulnerability index still below the maximum limit vulnerability index (1.8), fishing activities can still be increased, particularly for narrowbarred Spanish mackerel and longtail tuna that has the lowest vurnerability.

Tittle: Sustainability Analysis of Small Scale Fisheries in Tegal District of Central Java (a Fish Approach). The research on sustainability of small scale fisheries in Tegal district, Central Java has been carried out. Fishery sustainability is determined by several interacting factors, such as ecology, technology, social, economic and legal-institution. The objective of this study was to determine the sustainability status of small scale fishery according to ecological, technological, social, economic, and legal-institutional dimensions. The second objective was to identify policy promoting for the capture fisheries sustainability. Sustainability of fishery in the coastal area of Tegal district analyzed quantitatively by Rap fish technique. Fishing gears, such as Jaring Rampus, Bundes and Payang Gemplo weren’t in sustainable status from ecological, economic, technical and legal- institutional standpoints. The study showed that ecological aspect has the lowest score in order to support small scale fishery sustainability in the coastal water of Tegal. Differences in sustainability status are likely due to variations in main characteristic of the fisheries. Several sensitive attributes and recommendations in order to support fisheries sustainability, also identified in this study. This study reconfirms the need to apply comprehensive and integrated bio-technico-socioeconomic aspects in developing fisheries management.

This study intended to investigate the effect of social support and hope simultaneously and independently on resilience in adolescents. This study used quantitative methods with ex post facto design. Multistage random sampling techniques were used, which resulted in a sample of 291 adolescents in junior high school from Pagentan district, Central Java, Indonesia. They completed three questionnaires of social support, hope, and resilience. The validity of the instruments used was measured by psychology measurement experts (content validity). Then, the reliability of the instruments was analyzed using Cronbach’s alpha. The Cronbach’s alpha for each instrument was 0,854 (social support), 0,835 (hope), and 0,778 (resiliency). Data were analyzed using multiple regression at the significance level of 0,05. The results of the study reveal that there is an effect of social support and hope simultaneously and independently on resilience in adolescents. There are effective contributions of social support and hope to the resilience of about 41% (from social support 13,2% and hope of 27,8% respectively).
