Lay summary To visualise tissues to determine the presence of disease or simply to understand anatomy, it is important to preserve fresh tissue. Fixatives are chemical solutions that preserve tissues to enable microscopic evaluation. However, some fixatives introduce artefact such as shrinkage of cells. Recently, a new fixative, Form-Acetic, was developed that is superior for preserving the structure of ovary tissue and allows investigation of ovary composition. One component of the ovary is hyaluronic acid (HA), which plays a crucial role in normal ovary function and fertility. Importantly, HA is sensitive to different fixative solutions. Therefore, it is meaningful to verify whether Form-Acetic is suitable for detecting HA. In this study, adult mouse ovaries were fixed in Form-Acetic and HA was detected. All HA-containing structures in the ovary were clearly distinguished which proves that the novel fixative allows the detection of HA.

Ronald Lockley (1903–2000), distinguished naturalist, pioneering conservationist, author in multiple genres, and paradigmatic modern ‘island dweller’, played a crucial role in defining our sense of Welsh and wider archipelagic ‘islandness’. Drawing on ‘nissology’—a dynamic ‘research frontier’ that brings together the arts, sciences, and social sciences to scrutinize not only islands ‘in their own terms’, but also the complex cultural condition of islandness—this chapter offers an analysis of how Welsh island space is mediated through Lockley’s plethora of discourses, from autobiographical narratives of island existence to definitive field studies and scientific papers, to works of popular anthropology, social history, and the novel Seal Woman (1974). It demonstrates how Lockley’s construction of a series of relational Welsh identities is linked to wider British and global archipelagic locations of culture.

Nature and literature are interwoven. Without natural world, the beauty of words cannot be celebrated. So far in literature the exquisiteness of nature is being taken into deliberation. Trees play a crucial role in our planet but they are taken for granted by humans for their sophisticated life. It is easy to plant tree saplings but it is very difficult to protect a tree. Trees play an important role for human survival. Still people are not concerned to protect or conserve forest because they are connected with machines than with nature. Every individuals run behind the technical advancement that they will protest in virtual media to safeguard nature but not in reality. Trees do communicate but human fails to understand. This study unfurls the dark destroying side of nature through the Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Overstory by Robert Powers.

The mean values and standard deviations for the concentrations of the hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulphuric acid fractions isolated from 11 specimens of human skin were 24.5 ± 5.7 and 26.2 ± 4.7 mgm. per 100 gm. of fresh tissue, respectively.The individual differences in the concentrations of these substances were masked by the technical errors. The small variations in moisture and ash content of the skin did not contribute appreciably to the uncertainty of the concentration values. The purity of the products, determined by their amino sugar content, approximated 60%, which value compared favorably with those obtained by other workers.The content of hexosamine and uronic acid identified both fractions as acid mucopolysaccharides. The release of reducing substances, including N-acetyl hexosamine, from the hyaluronic acid fraction by hyaluronidase paralleled the action of the enzyme upon hyaluronate from umbilical cord. The chondroitin sulphuric acid fraction, which was relatively resistant to the action of hyaluronidase, was assumed to be identical with the chondroitin sulphatelike substance that Meyer and Chaffee isolated from pig skin.

This chapter examines the construction of Chinese gay identity in a popular queer online fiction titled Beijing Story. Drawing on the Derridian notion of “hauntology”, I propose to read the novel as a social critique of postsocialist China in the context of globalization and neoliberalism. I highlight the intersections between sexuality, masculinity, and class in the narrative, and the potential productivity of paying more attention to the issue of class in queer subject formation in contemporary China. I also emphasize the crucial role of the transnational, as well as historical forms of homoeroticism and recent historical memories of revolution and reconstruction, in constructing contemporary gay identity in China. In doing so, I critically assess the role of “queer Marxism” (Liu 2015) in a transnational Chinese context.

Soft-tissue fillers made of hyaluronic acid and combined with lidocaine have recently become a popular tool in aesthetic medicine. Several manufacturers have developed their own proprietary formulae with varying manufacturing tools, concentrations, crosslinked three-dimensional network structures, pore size distributions of the fibrous networks, as well as cohesivity levels and rheological properties, lending fillers and filler ranges their unique properties and degradability profiles. One such range of hyaluronic acid fillers manufactured using the novel eXcellent three-dimensional reticulation (XTR™) technology was evaluated in comparison with other HA fillers and filler ranges by an independent research laboratory. Fillers manufactured with the XTR™ technology were shown to have characteristic rheological, crosslinking and biophysical factors that support the suitability of this filler range for certain patient profiles.

Objectives: To assess voice outcomes using the novel technique of in-office laryngeal electromyography-guided vocal fold injections (LEVFI) with hyaluronic acid to treat glottal insufficiency. Secondary objectives included determining the complication/completion rates and if any factors were associated with improved voice outcomes. Methods: Retrospective review of patients who received their first LEVFI from August 2017 to December 2018. Three- and six-month voice outcomes were assessed. Outcomes included voice handicap index-10 (VHI-10), maximum phonation time (MPT), perceptual analysis of voice (GRBAS), fundamental frequency, and stroboscopy. Results: Of the 121 eligible patients (55.4% male, age 63.7 years), 94 (77.7%) had complete 3-month data and 59 (48.8%) had complete 6-month data. VHI-10 was significantly improved from 25.7 ± 7.5 to 20.9 ± 10.9 at 3 months ( P < .001) and to 19.1 ± 11.5 at 6 months ( P < .001). MPT improved from 6.2 ± 5.4 seconds to 9.4 ± 7.1 seconds at 3 months ( P < .001) and to 11.3 ± 8.2 seconds at 6 months ( P < .001). GRBAS was improved in 74.8% of patients ([65.2, 82.8] 95% CI) at 3 months and 80.8% ([69.9, 89.1]) 95% CI) at 6 months. Stroboscopy showed a glottic gap improvement in 74.8% of patients ([65.8, 82.4] 95% CI) at 3 months and in 80.3% ([65.9, 88.5] 95% CI) at 6 months. Fundamental frequency was unchanged, as expected. Multivariate analysis reported that no factors were associated with better voice outcomes. Overall, 177/181 (97.8%) injections were completed. There were no complications. Conclusion: In-office LEVFI is an effective, novel technique to treat glottic insufficiency with improved voice outcomes, high completion rate, and no significant complications.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) has been implemented for chemo and photothermal therapy to target tumour cells overexpressing the CD44+ receptor. HA-targeting hybrid systems allows carbon nanomaterial (CNM) carriers to efficiently deliver anticancer drugs, such as doxorubicin and gemcitabine, to the tumour sites. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, graphene oxide (GO), and graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are grouped for a detailed review of the novel nanocomposites for cancer therapy. Some CNMs proved to be more successful than others in terms of stability and effectiveness at removing relative tumour volume. While the literature has been focused primarily on the CNTs and GO, other CNMs such as carbon nano-onions (CNOs) proved quite promising for targeted drug delivery using HA. Near-infrared laser photoablation is also reviewed as a primary method of cancer therapy—it can be used alone or in conjunction with chemotherapy to achieve promising chemo-photothermal therapy protocols. This review aims to give a background into HA and why it is a successful cancer-targeting component of current CNM-based drug delivery systems.

Abstract Background Nonsurgical aesthetic treatment of the nose is becoming increasingly popular. VYC-25L is a novel hyaluronic acid product with the high G’ and cohesivity required of a nasal filler. Objectives The authors sought to assess the safety and efficacy of VYC-25L for treatment of the nose utilizing a previously published, grid-based protocol. Methods This was a retrospective, single-center analysis of data from adult patients undergoing treatment of the nose with VYC-25L between February and April 2019 utilizing the grid system as the reference for injection quantity and sequencing. Specific procedures included correction of inadequate projection, deep glabella treatment, correction of a nasal hump, and adjustment of the nasolabial angle and columella. Patients were followed-up for 6 to 9 months. Results A total of 61 patients were included in the analysis (mean age, 32 ± 3 years; n = 45 females [74%]). At 2 weeks posttreatment, a high degree of defect correction was confirmed based on independent evaluation, with all patients scoring 9 or 10 on a 10-point visual analog scale. Fifty-nine of 61 patients (97%) self-assessed the degree of correction as “adequate.” Results were stable at 3- and 6-month follow-up visits. Complications recorded were bruising (n = 15, 25%), asymmetry (n = 2, 3%), and hematoma (n = 1, 2%). All resolved rapidly. There were no cases of infection, bumps, or skin necrosis. Conclusions VYC-25L is safe and efficacious for treatment of the nose, with high levels of patient satisfaction. It has potential to be a valuable tool in nonsurgical rhinoplasty. Chapter 7, “Writing Smell,” suggests that if we look at poetry and the novel in the West, it turns out that many Western writers have in fact been able to articulate smell experiences forcefully and convincingly. The discussion of poetry (Baudelaire and Heaney) focuses on synesthetic metaphors. A careful discussion of Baudelaire’s Correspondences shows his ability to give subtle and complex expression to the qualities of odors. The discussion of novelists considers not only their use of linguistic devices to bring smells to life, but their use of a variety of devices for expressing character and other issues through smells with attention to the work of Joyce, Woolf, and Faulkner. Particular attention is given to the crucial role that smell plays in delineating the character of Leopold Bloom in Joyce’s Ulysses.
