The paper is based on a survey that was conducted among publishers in Slovakia, Iceland, Lithuania and Slovenia in May and August 2020. The paper looks at how publishers reacted to the COVID-19 crisis in their respective countries, what was its impact on book sales and how did the publishers adapt the production of new books to changed circumstances. In addition, the paper analyses changed attitudes of publishers towards e-books and other digital book formats that become more popular in lockdown times. The research revealed that COVID-19 lockdowns resulted in decreased sales of printed books in all four small book markets. However, sales of e-books and audiobooks slightly increased during that period. This increase in digital sales did not contribute significantly to overall results of book industries due to its small market share in all four countries.

This paper discusses the environmental and performance requirements for ‘environmentally acceptable’ lubricants (EAL), and the reasons for their small market share in Europe and the USA. Several initiatives, which could stimulate the uptake of EAL in the marketplace, are summarized.

The view is widely held in the literature on business policy that not only does structure follow strategy, but that size (measured in terms of turnover) and diversification strategy are closely correlated. This paper examines the relationship between degree of diversification and sales turnover of several South African listed companies which undertook diversification strategies between 1970 and 1976. The results show that there is no significant correlation between turnover and degree of diversification among these companies. Both small and large firms are seen to have similar degrees of diversification. The findings suggest that firms should avoid diversifying into several different markets while having a relatively small market share in each, as both managerial and financial resources then become too thinly spread. Such companies are likely takeover candidates in recessionary periods.

Small market-share brands are known to suffer from two specific disadvantages compared with high-share brands: they tend to have fewer buyers than high-share brands, and they also tend to be bought less often (Ehrenberg, Goodhardt, and Barwise 1990). The authors consider a third important advantage for high-share brands: unusually high behavioral loyalty (e.g., degree of repeat purchasing). We show, across many product-markets in both Japan and the U.S., that high-share brands have significantly greater loyalty than the levels that would be expected on the basis of a popular consumer purchase model (the Dirichlet model). Several possible causes for this effect are examined, including four key assumptions that underlie the Dirichlet model. The most likely source appears to be the existence of distinct consumer segments, which may emerge through the distribution strategies pursued by both large brands and small retailers. The authors discuss other possible causes of this market-share premium as well as several of its managerial implications.

In 1982, in the course of transferring the archive of the De Paoli family of Porciorasco to the Museo Contadino di Cassego (eastern Ligurian Apennines), a manuscript herbal dated about 1598 was discovered. The document is analysed here in all its aspect: the materials (paper, inks and pigments), the plants represented, the iconographical models, and the archival context. The result is a hypothesis about the circulation of knowledge about natural history in the area where it was found and used between the late sixteenth and the nineteenth centuries. As for the iconographical sources, models were found in both manuscripts and printed books from the medico-botanical tradition, including Hortus sanitatis and Tractatus de virtutibus herbarum.
