A Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, gas-forming, catalase-negative, nonmotile, non-sporeforming, vancomycin-resistant, and ovoid-shaped bacterium, designated strain Tw234, was isolated from the intestinal tract of Parona leatherjacket (Parona signata). The strain grew in the presence of 0–6% (w/v) NaCl, at pH 3.5–8.5 and 8–40 °C; optimum growth was achieved at 1% (w/v) NaCl, at pH 6.0 and 30–32 °C. Exopolysacharides production was detected by the solidification test of skim milk supplemented with sucrose in the temperature range of 8 to 30 °C. Results of phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity indicated that strain Tw234 was closed related to the genus Leuconostoc and 100% homology with the type strain Ln. mesenteroides ssp. jonggajibkimchii DRC1506 (KCCM 43249, JCM 31787). The evaluation of growth and acidification rates were carried out in white cabbage and Chinese cabbage and compared with the strain Ln. mesenteroides ssp. jonggajibkimchii RCTw1.1, isolated from the spontaneous fermentation of red cabbage. No significant differences were observed between the behaviors of the two strains. The strain Tw234 displayed higher growth and acidification rates in controlled fermentation of white cabbage compared with those obtained in Chinese cabbage. New trends are targeted on the isolation and selection of strains to achieve controlled fermentation of vegetables that may ensure uniform quality. The results obtained in this work suggest that strain Tw234 harbored technological useful properties for its potential use as a starter in controlled vegetable fermentations.

This study aims to isolate and select strains of Bacillus for protease production from fermented soybean products. To evaluate the ability of protease production, the authors applied the hydrolysis diameter measurement method on Skim milk agar (SMA) and submerged fermentation (SmF). The results showed that 29 bacterial strains were isolated from fermented soybean products in An Giang and Can Tho provinces. Based on the morphological and biochemical characteristics of bacteria, these are defined belong to the Bacillus genus. The results of the protease generation test on SMA helped to select eight strains with a high halo diameter. In SmF with 106 cells/ml, pH 7.2, at 37°C for 48 hours, the ML01 strain gave the highest specific protease activity of 185.92 U/mg. Sequence analysis results of the 16S rRNA gene region of ML01 exhibited a high relationship with the sequence of Bacillus subtilis.

Strain S658T was isolated from a Lotus corniculatus nodule in a soil sample obtained in Uruguay. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene and atpD gene showed that this strain clustered within the genus Phyllobacterium . The closest related species was, in both cases, Phyllobacterium trifolii PETP02T with 99.8 % sequence similarity in the 16S rRNA gene and 96.1 % in the atpD gene. The 16S rRNA gene contains an insert at the beginning of the sequence that has no similarities with other inserts present in the same gene in described rhizobial species. Ubiquinone Q-10 was the only quinone detected. Strain S658T differed from its closest relatives through its growth in diverse culture conditions and in the assimilation of several carbon sources. It was not able to reproduce nodules in Lotus corniculatus. The results of DNA–DNA hybridization, phenotypic tests and fatty acid analyses confirmed that this strain should be classified as a representative of a novel species of the genus Phyllobacterium , for which the name Phyllobacterium loti sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S658T( = LMG 27289T = CECT 8230T).

A Gram-stain-positive, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium, designated XJ259T, was isolated from a cold spring sample from Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. The isolate grew optimally at 20–30 °C and pH 7.3–7.8. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that isolate XJ259T belonged phylogenetically to the genus Paenibacillus, and was most closely related to Paenibacillus xinjiangensis B538T (with 96.6 % sequence similarity), Paenibacillus glycanilyticus DS-1T (96.3 %) and Paenibacillus castaneae Ch-32T (96.1 %), sharing less than 96.0 % sequence similarity with all other members of the genus Paenibacillus. Chemotaxonomic analysis revealing menaquinone-7 (MK-7) as the major isoprenoid quinone, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and two unknown phosphoglycolipids as the major cellular polar lipids, a DNA G+C content of 47.0 mol%, and anteiso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids supported affiliation of the new isolate to the genus Paenibacillus. Based on these data, isolate XJ259T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus algorifonticola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is XJ259T ( = CGMCC 1.10223T  = JCM 16598T).

A yellow-pigmented, Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, strictly aerobic and rod-shaped bacterium, designated CS100T, was isolated from soil in Chungbuk, Korea. Phylogenetic analysis and comparative studies based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain CS100T belonged to the genus Flavobacterium in the family Flavobacteriaceae. Strain CS100T showed the highest sequence similarities to Flavobacterium glaciei JCM 13953T (97.6 %) and Flavobacterium johnsoniae KACC 11410T (97.1 %). Sequence similarity to other members of the genus Flavobacterium was 91.5–97.0 %. Growth occurred at 4–30 °C, at pH 5.0–9.0 and in the presence of 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl. Flexirubin-type pigments were produced. Menaquinone-6 (MK-6) was the major respiratory quinone and the major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (17.3 %), summed feature 3 (comprising iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c, 15.5 %) and C16 : 0 (11.8 %). The DNA G+C content was 36.4 mol%. Strain CS100T hydrolysed skimmed milk and gelatin, but not chitin or pectin, and showed oxidase and catalase activities. DNA–DNA relatedness was 3.0 % with F. glaciei JCM 13953T and 11.5 % with F. johnsoniae KACC 11410T. On the basis of the evidence from this study, strain CS100T represents a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium, for which the name Flavobacterium chungbukense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CS100T ( = KACC 15048T = JCM 17386T).

Abstract A Gram-stain-negative, gliding-motile, positive for catalase, facultative anaerobic, designated strain XSD401T, was isolated from the red algae of Xiaoshi Island, Shandong Province, China. Growth occurred at 20–37 °C (optimum, 33 °C), pH 5.5–9.5 (optimum, pH 6.5–7.5), and with 0.5–5% (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 3%). The main fatty acids are iso-C15:0, iso-C15:1 G, iso-C17:0 3-OH, iso-C15:0 3-OH, C16:0. Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), three unidentified aminolipids (AL1, AL2, AL3) and one unidentified lipid (L) were the major polar lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 33.9 mol%. Strain XSD401T had the highest sequence similarity (96.88%) to the 16S rRNA gene of Psychroserpens damuponensis KCTC 23539T. The similarities with Psychroserpens burtonensis DSM 12212T was 96.31%. The dDDH values between strain XSD401T and P. damuponensis KCTC 23539T, P. burtonensis DSM 12212T, were 20.40% and 20.30%, respectively. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) values between strain XSD401T and P. damuponensis KCTC 23539T, P. burtonensis DSM 12212T were 76.91%, 76.88%, respectively. The differences in morphology, physiology and genotype from the previously described taxa support the classification of strain XSD401T as a representative of a novel species of the genus Psychroserpens, for which the name Psychroserpens luteus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is XSD401T (= MCCC 1H00396T = KCTC 72684T = JCM 33931T).

Three novel endophytic strains, designated 17B10-2-12T, 26C10-4-4 and D13-10-4-9, were isolated from the bark of Populus euramericana in Heze, Shandong Province, China. They were Gram-reaction-negative, aerobic, non-motile, short-rod-shaped, oxidase-positive and catalase-negative. A phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene showed that the three novel strains clustered with members of the family Comamonadaceae and formed a distinct branch. The isolates shared 100 % similarities among themselves and had the highest sequence similarity with Xenophilus azovorans DSM 13620T (95.2 %) and Xenophilus arseniciresistens YW8T (95.0 %), and less than 95.0 % sequence similarities with members of other species. Their major fatty acids were C16 : 0, C17 : 0 cyclo, C18 : 1ω7c and C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and three unknown aminophospholipids. The predominant quinone was ubiquinone-8 (Q-8). The DNA G+C content was 69.5–70.0 mol%. Based on data from a polyphasic taxonomy study, the three strains represent a novel species of a novel genus of the family Comamonadaceae, for which the name Corticibacter populi gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 17B10-2-12T ( = CFCC 12099T = KCTC 42091T).

A novel actinomycete, designated strain NEAU-Z6T, was isolated from eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) root. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain NEAU-Z6T belonged to the genus Nonomuraea , with highest sequence similarity to Nonomuraea monospora PT 708T (98.83 %), Nonomuraea rosea GW 12687T (98.55 %) and Nonomuraea rhizophila YIM 67092T (98.02 %). Sequence similarities between strain NEAU-Z6T and other species of the genus Nonomuraea ranged from 97.94 % ( Nonomuraea candida HMC10T) to 96.30 % ( Nonomuraea wenchangensis 210417T). Key morphological, physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics of strain NEAU-Z6T were congruent with the description of the genus Nonomuraea . The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 64.51 mol%. DNA–DNA relatedness and comparative analysis of physiological, biochemical and chemotaxonomic data allowed genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain NEAU-Z6T from closely related species. Thus, strain NEAU-Z6T represents a novel species of the genus Nonomuraea , for which the name Nonomuraea solani sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NEAU-Z6T ( = CGMCC 4.7037T = DSM 45729T).

Strain GR3T was isolated from drinking water during a screening programme to monitor the bacterial population present in the distribution system of Seville (Spain), and it was studied phenotypically, genotypically and phylogenetically. This pink-pigmented bacterium was identified as a Methylobacterium sp. Members of this genus are distributed in a wide variety of natural habitats, including soil, dust, air, freshwater and aquatic sediments. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain GR3T was closely related to Methylobacterium aquaticum (97·4 % sequence similarity), whereas sequence similarity values with respect to the rest of the species belonging to this genus were lower than 96 %. Furthermore, the DNA–DNA hybridization data and its phenotypic characteristics clearly indicate that the isolate represents a novel Methylobacterium species, for which the name Methylobacterium variabile sp. nov. is proposed. GR3T (=DSM 16961T=CCM 7281T=CECT 7045T) is the type strain; the DNA G+C content of this strain is 69·2 mol%.

Deinococcus species are widely studied due to their utility in bioremediation of sites contaminated with radioactive elements. In the present study, we re-evaluated the taxonomic placement of two species of the genus Deinococcus namely D. swuensis DY59T and D. radiopugnans ATCC 19172T based on whole genome analyses. The 16S rRNA gene analysis revealed a 99.58% sequence similarity between this species pair that is above the recommended threshold value for species delineation. These two species also clustered together in both the 16S rRNA gene and core genome based phylogenies depicting their close relatedness. Furthermore, more than 98% of genes were shared between D. swuensi s DY59T and D. radiopugnans ATCC 19172T. Interestingly, D. swuensis DY59T and D. radiopugnans ATCC 19172T shared high genome similarity in different genomic indices. They displayed an average nucleotide identity value of 97.63%, an average amino acid identity value of 97% and a digital DNA–DNA hybridization value equal to 79.50%, all of which are well above the cut-off for species delineation. Altogether, based on these evidences, D. swuensis DY59T and D. radiopugnans ATCC 19172T constitute a single species. Hence, as per the priority of publication, we propose that Deinococcus swuensis Lee et al. 2015 should be reclassified as a later heterotypic synonym of Deinococcus radiopugnans .

Two novel thermophilic micro-organisms, designated YMO81T and YMO722T, were isolated from a high-temperature compost (internal temperature >95 °C). The isolates were able to grow at 80 °C in a nutrient broth and in a synthetic medium. Cells were aerobic, Gram-negative rods (0.3×4.0 μm). Spore formation was not observed. Strain YMO81T grew at 83 °C and pH 6.9–8.9 and grew optimally at 78 °C and pH 7.5 with 2 % NaCl. For growth in a synthetic minimal medium at 70 °C, the vitamins biotin, folic acid and thiamine and the amino acids glutamine and methionine were essential for growth of both strains; at 80 °C, strain YMO81T also required histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, phenylalanine, serine, tryptophan and valine. Cellular fatty acids of the isolates comprised mainly iso-C17 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The DNA G+C contents of strains YMO81T and YMO722T were 70 and 64 mol%, respectively. When the 16S rRNA gene sequences of the isolates were compared with those of other bacteria, highest similarity was observed with Planifilum yunnanense LA5T (90 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). DNA–DNA relatedness between strain YMO722T and strain YMO81T was 55 %. N 4-Aminopropylspermine was identified as a major polyamine, which suggested that the isolates were distinct from other related taxa. On the basis of phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses, we propose a new genus, Calditerricola gen. nov., and two novel species, the type species Calditerricola satsumensis sp. nov., with type strain YMO81T (=ATCC BAA-1462T =JCM 14719T =DSM 45223T), and Calditerricola yamamurae sp. nov., with type strain YMO722T (=ATCC BAA-1461T =JCM 14720T =DSM 45224T).
