Effect of irrigation and manure application on the growth and yield of groundnut

Field experiments were conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Aliyar Nagar, Tamil Nadu, India during summer 1994 and 1995 on groundnut, adopting a split plot design. Two irrigation regimes based on Irrigation Water/Cumulative Pan Evaporation (IW/CPE) ratios of 0.60 (I1) and 0.75 (I2) were allotted to the main plot. Twelve treatments involving combinations of organic manure with mineral fertilizer were assigned to the subplots. Irrigation scheduled at IW/CPE 0.75 led to higher plant height, number of branches plant –1, dry matter production and leaf area index, resulting in higher yield than IW/CPE 0.60. All the growth attributes and the yield increased in response to a higher level of mineral fertilizer application and organic manure application. The combined application of inorganic and organic manures significantly enhanced the growth attributes and yield of groundnut compared to the sole application of either of them.

Field experiments were conducted during the summer (February-May) and south west monsoon (June-September) seasons of 1996 and 1997 at the Aliyarnagar Agricultural Research Station of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, India, to study the growth and yield of soybean in response to irrigation, composted coir pith, time of N, P, K application and use of a nutrient mixture spray. The results revealed that irrigation at 0.90 IW/CPE [ratio of Irrigation Water Depth (IW) to Cumulative Pan Evaporation (CPE)], the application of composted coir pith and the split application of N, P and K in conjunction with a nutrient mixture spray significantly increased the plant height, leaf area index, dry matter production and grain yield of soybean. However, the root length of soybean was significantly reduced by irrigating at 0.90 IW/CPE (compared to irrigation at 0.70 IW/CPE and 0.50 IW/CPE) and by the application of composted coir pith.

Field experiments were conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Thirupathisaram, Tamil Nadu during <italic>kharif</italic> and <italic>rabi</italic> seasons of 2011-12 to evaluate the different establishment techniques on growth and yield of rice. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with four replications. The treatment structure comprises of wet seeding, drum seeding, random transplanting, line planting, SRI square planting and SRI machine planting. Among the different establishment techniques, SRI machine planting significantly influenced the growth and yield characters and yield and which was on par with SRI square planting. The maximum plant height, number of tillers hill<sup>−1</sup>, LAI, dry matter production, number of panicles m<sup>−2</sup>, number of grains panicle<sup>−1</sup>, panicle length, grain yield and straw yield were recorded under SRI machine planting during <italic>kharif</italic> and <italic>rabi</italic>. The lowest grain yield and straw yield were recorded under wet seeding during both <italic>kharif</italic> and <italic>rabi</italic>.

The present study aimed to the effect of different organic manures on the growth and yield attributes of cotton by conducting field experiments during rice fallow season of 2013-14 and 2014-15 at the Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute, Aduthurai.. The cotton growth parameters such as plant height, leaf area index, dry matter production and monopodial branches plant-1 were significantly influenced by the application of 100% recommended dose of fertilizer through vermicompost (on equal N basis). Also application of recommended dose of fertilizer through vermicompost (on equal N basis) recorded significantly higher yield attributes viz., sympodial branches plant-1, number of bolls plant-1, boll weight and seed cotton yield (17.4 and 18.6 q ha-1 during both the years, respectively). Economic analysis also indicated that Insitu vermicomposting produced higher net returns with higher B:C ratio.

Field experiments were carried out to study the effect of foliar application of different sources of phosphorus on yield of transplanted redgram (Cajanus cajan) in June (Kharif) 2014 to 2015 and 2015 to 2016 at Regional Research Station, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Paiyur, Tamil Nadu. The treatments included different concentrations of different phosphorus sources like mono ammonium phosphate (MAP), di ammonium hosphate (DAP), all 19 as a foliar application at flowering phase. The results revealed that foliar application of 0.5% mono ammonium phosphate (MAP) at flower initiation and 15 days after first spray recorded higher growth and yield parameters such as number of branches per plant, no. of pods, no. of seeds pod 1 and 100 seed weight resulting in higher grain yield of 2512 kg ha-1, net income of Rs. 95215/- and B:C ratio of 2.97.

Field experiments with French bean comprising two varieties (BARI bush bean-1 and BARI bush bean-2), three plant densities (500 x 103, 333 x 103, and 250 x 103 plants/ha as maintained by 20 x 10, 30 x 10, and 40 x 10 cm spacings, respectively) and three levels of N (0, 60, and 120 kg/ha) were conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali in the district of Rangamati during the winter (rabi) seasons of 2004-05 and 2005-06. BARI bush bean-1 outyielded BARI bush bean-2. The lowest plant density (250 x 10 plants/ha) recorded significantly higher values of growth and yield attributes, except plant height which was the maximum with the highest plant density of 500 x 103 plants/ha. The highest plant density of (500 x 103 plants/ha) resulted in the highest pod yield in comparison with the lower and medium plant densities. Application of 120 kg N/ha coupled with the highest plant density (500 x l03 plants/ha) gave the maximum pod yield of 34.3 t/ha and 30.2 t/ha in BARI bush bean-I and BARI bush bean-2, respectively. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different sowing dates on growth and yield potential of pre released rice genotypes under irrigated conditions of Northern Telangana zone. The field experiments were carried out during two consecutive rabi seasons of 2018-19 and 2019-20, on clay soils of agricultural research station, Kunaram, Telangana state, India. The experiment was laid out in strip plot design with three replications. The treatments comprised of three sowing dates i.e. 20th November, 5th December and 20th December in horizontal factor and four genotypes i.e. KNM 733, RNR 15048, KNM 1638 and KNM 118 in vertical factor. Pooled data analysis results revealed that the different sowing dates and genotypes significant effect on all the studied growth and yield characters. The rice crop sown on 20th December recorded significantly  higher grain yield ( 8138 kg ha-1) and Among the genotypes, the short slender, short duration genotype KNM 733 recorded the recorded the maximum grain yield ( 8024 kg ha-1), which was on par with the other genotypes. The treatment combinations data results concluded that the, among the genotypes the genotype KNM 118 was recorded highest grain yield (8438 kg ha-1) when sowing was taken up on 20th December and followed by  the genotype KNM 733 with sown on 20th  November. In respect of economics of treatment combinations, the highest net returns (Rs.91,165 ha-1) and B:C (2.47)  ratio were obtained when rice crop was sown during 20th December with the  genotype KNM 118 and followed by sown on 20th November with the  genotype KNM 733.

Field experiments were conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Bhavanisagar, Tamil Nadu, India during 1999 to 2000 in Inceptisols to evaluate boron fertilizers (borax, boric acid, Agribor) and to assess the effect of the mode and level of B application on the total B uptake and yield of sunflower and green gram. The experimental field was found to be deficient in available B (0.35 mg kg-1). Sunflower was raised as the main crop. Different B levels (0.5, 1.0, 1.5and 2.0 kg B ha-1)as soil application and two levels of foliar spray (0.2% and 0.3%) were compared with the control. The treatments were superimposed on the recommended dose of NPK. After harvestingthe main crop of sunflower, the residual effect of B was studied by raising green gram on the same field. The results revealed that the application of all the levels of B resulted in a significant increase in the B uptake and yield of sunflower as compared to the control. The highest yield was recorded for the soil application of B at a rate of 2.0 kg ha-1. The yield increase of sunflower was 3.6 to 15.8% and 7.2 to 18.9% over the control for seed and stalk, respectively. The green gram grain yield increased by 4.2 to 13.5% after the application of 1.0 and 2.0 kg B ha-1 to the main crop. No residual effect was observed for the lowest level of B application (0.5 kg ha-1). Agribor is equally as effective as borax in influencing the B nutrition of both the crops.

Direct seeded rice is a boon to farmers where the water release from the reservoir is delayed. Nitrogen fertiliser management is one of the strategies bto rectify the nutrient-related issue in Direct seeded rice. The present study aimed to optimize the nitrogen dose for direct-seeded rice in the new and old Cauvery delta zone of Tamil Nadu. Field experiments were conducted during kuruvai and samba seasons at Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute, Aduthurai and Agricultural research station Thanjavur representing old and new Cauvery delta regions during 2019-20 and 2020-21. Totally from eight experiments, the results of four field experiments in each location revealed the highest grain yield in the treatment T6 -application of 150 kg Nha-1 (5596kg/ha) which was statistically on par with treatment T5 -125kg N/ha (5326 kg/ha) in old delta and new delta. The higher grain yield was recorded in the T6 (5140 kg/ha), statistically on par with T5 (4550 kg/ha). The higher available nitrogen content of 312 kg/ ha,292 kg/ha was recorded for N application @ 150kg/ha, which was statistically on par with  309 kg/ha and 289 kg/ha, respectively, both the kuruvai and samba seasons for N application of 125 kg/ha. In the new CDZ, the same trend was followed as that of the old delta. Based on economics, N applied @125 kg/ha recorded a higher BC ratio for direct-seeded rice. For the benefit of farmers of both deltaic regions, the nitrogen application of 125 kg ha-1 for direct-seeded rice is recommended.

Two field experiments were conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Tarahara, Nepal during 2012 and 2013 to determine the effect of agronomic management on growth and yield of Swarna Sub1 under flash floods. The first experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications; and four different nutrient combinations at nursery as main plots and three age groups of rice seedlings as sub plots. The second experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design and replicated thrice; with three post flood nutrient doses at six and 12 days after de-submergence (dad). The experiments were complete submerged at 10 days after transplanting for 12 days. The survival percentage, at 21 dad, was significantly higher in plots planted with 35 (90.25%) and 40 (91.58%) days-old seedlings compared to 30 days-old seedlings (81.75%). Plots with 35 days-old seedlings produced 5.15 t ha-1 with advantage of 18.83% over 30 days-old seedlings. Plots with 100-50-50 kg N-P2O5-K2O/ha at nursery recorded the highest grain filling of 79.41% and grain yield of 5.068 t/ha with more benefit. Post flood application of 20-20 N-K20kg/ha at 6 dad resulted in higher plant survival and taller plants, leading to significantly higher grain yield of 5.183 t/ha and straw yield of 5.315 t/ha. Hence, 35-40 days old seedlings raised with 100-50-50 kg N-P2O5-K2O /ha in nursery and the additional application of20-20 kg N-K2O /ha at 6 dad improved plant survival and enhanced yield of Swarna Sub1 under flash flood conditions. The practice has prospects of saving crop loss with getting rice yield above national average yield leading to enhanced food security in the flood prone areas of Nepal.

A field experiment was conducted in sugarcane over 2019-20 and 2020-21 cropping seasons at the Regional Agricultural Research Station of Anakapalle (Andhra Pradesh) on sandy clay soils. The objective was to determine the effect of organic and mineral fertilizer rates and timing on growth and yield of a sugarcane seed crop. The experiment was laid out following split plot design with three main organic fertilizer treatments and six N-K fertilizer sub treatments, in three replications. Results showed a significant increase in stalk height, numbers of tillers ha-1 and cane yield due to organic fertilizer, namely biofertilizer and trash mulching, in combination with 125% STBNK applied at 30 days interval + additional dose of 25% recommended K fertilizer applied one month prior to harvest.
