Evaluation of boron fertilizers for a sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) - green gram (Vigna radiata L) cropping sequence in Inceptisols

Field experiments were conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Bhavanisagar, Tamil Nadu, India during 1999 to 2000 in Inceptisols to evaluate boron fertilizers (borax, boric acid, Agribor) and to assess the effect of the mode and level of B application on the total B uptake and yield of sunflower and green gram. The experimental field was found to be deficient in available B (0.35 mg kg-1). Sunflower was raised as the main crop. Different B levels (0.5, 1.0, 1.5and 2.0 kg B ha-1)as soil application and two levels of foliar spray (0.2% and 0.3%) were compared with the control. The treatments were superimposed on the recommended dose of NPK. After harvestingthe main crop of sunflower, the residual effect of B was studied by raising green gram on the same field. The results revealed that the application of all the levels of B resulted in a significant increase in the B uptake and yield of sunflower as compared to the control. The highest yield was recorded for the soil application of B at a rate of 2.0 kg ha-1. The yield increase of sunflower was 3.6 to 15.8% and 7.2 to 18.9% over the control for seed and stalk, respectively. The green gram grain yield increased by 4.2 to 13.5% after the application of 1.0 and 2.0 kg B ha-1 to the main crop. No residual effect was observed for the lowest level of B application (0.5 kg ha-1). Agribor is equally as effective as borax in influencing the B nutrition of both the crops.

Field experiments were conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Aliyar Nagar, Tamil Nadu, India during summer 1994 and 1995 on groundnut, adopting a split plot design. Two irrigation regimes based on Irrigation Water/Cumulative Pan Evaporation (IW/CPE) ratios of 0.60 (I1) and 0.75 (I2) were allotted to the main plot. Twelve treatments involving combinations of organic manure with mineral fertilizer were assigned to the subplots. Irrigation scheduled at IW/CPE 0.75 led to higher plant height, number of branches plant –1, dry matter production and leaf area index, resulting in higher yield than IW/CPE 0.60. All the growth attributes and the yield increased in response to a higher level of mineral fertilizer application and organic manure application. The combined application of inorganic and organic manures significantly enhanced the growth attributes and yield of groundnut compared to the sole application of either of them.

Field experiments were conducted during kharif 2013 and 2014 at Agricultural Research Station, Mugad, University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad (Karnataka), to determine the response of zinc applicationon on growth, zinc content and grain yield of rice genotypes and also studied correlation between yield and zinc content. The experiment was comprised of 20 genotypes and three treatments viz., T1: Control (no zinc); T2: Soil application of ZnSO4 (20 kg ha-1) T3– Foliar Spray of ZnSO4 @ 0.5% at 50% flowering, laid out in factorial randomized block design with two replications. The data revealed that application of ZnSO4 recorded significantly higher plant height (85.9 cm), leaf area (764.5 cm-2 plant-1), number of tillers (95.4 m-1), total dry weight (26.1 g plant-1), panicle weight(15.3 g plant-1), number of panicles (81.6 m-1) and grain yield(3966 kg ha-1) over the foliar application of Zn and control . However number of grains panicle-1 (97.8 panicle-1), test weight (23.7 g), shoot and seed zinc content (15.9 and 21.2 ppm, respectively) were increased with foliar application of Zn. Correlation studies classified the genotypes as high seed zinc content (> 21 ppm) and low seed zinc content genotypes ( less than 21 ppm). High and low seed zinc content genotypes showed negative correlation with yield and yield attributes. However, shoot zinc content was positively correlated with yield.

Direct seeded rice is a boon to farmers where the water release from the reservoir is delayed. Nitrogen fertiliser management is one of the strategies bto rectify the nutrient-related issue in Direct seeded rice. The present study aimed to optimize the nitrogen dose for direct-seeded rice in the new and old Cauvery delta zone of Tamil Nadu. Field experiments were conducted during kuruvai and samba seasons at Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute, Aduthurai and Agricultural research station Thanjavur representing old and new Cauvery delta regions during 2019-20 and 2020-21. Totally from eight experiments, the results of four field experiments in each location revealed the highest grain yield in the treatment T6 -application of 150 kg Nha-1 (5596kg/ha) which was statistically on par with treatment T5 -125kg N/ha (5326 kg/ha) in old delta and new delta. The higher grain yield was recorded in the T6 (5140 kg/ha), statistically on par with T5 (4550 kg/ha). The higher available nitrogen content of 312 kg/ ha,292 kg/ha was recorded for N application @ 150kg/ha, which was statistically on par with  309 kg/ha and 289 kg/ha, respectively, both the kuruvai and samba seasons for N application of 125 kg/ha. In the new CDZ, the same trend was followed as that of the old delta. Based on economics, N applied @125 kg/ha recorded a higher BC ratio for direct-seeded rice. For the benefit of farmers of both deltaic regions, the nitrogen application of 125 kg ha-1 for direct-seeded rice is recommended.

Field experiments were conducted during the summer (February-May) and south west monsoon (June-September) seasons of 1996 and 1997 at the Aliyarnagar Agricultural Research Station of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, India, to study the growth and yield of soybean in response to irrigation, composted coir pith, time of N, P, K application and use of a nutrient mixture spray. The results revealed that irrigation at 0.90 IW/CPE [ratio of Irrigation Water Depth (IW) to Cumulative Pan Evaporation (CPE)], the application of composted coir pith and the split application of N, P and K in conjunction with a nutrient mixture spray significantly increased the plant height, leaf area index, dry matter production and grain yield of soybean. However, the root length of soybean was significantly reduced by irrigating at 0.90 IW/CPE (compared to irrigation at 0.70 IW/CPE and 0.50 IW/CPE) and by the application of composted coir pith.

Field experiments were conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Thirupathisaram, Tamil Nadu during <italic>kharif</italic> and <italic>rabi</italic> seasons of 2011-12 to evaluate the different establishment techniques on growth and yield of rice. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with four replications. The treatment structure comprises of wet seeding, drum seeding, random transplanting, line planting, SRI square planting and SRI machine planting. Among the different establishment techniques, SRI machine planting significantly influenced the growth and yield characters and yield and which was on par with SRI square planting. The maximum plant height, number of tillers hill<sup>−1</sup>, LAI, dry matter production, number of panicles m<sup>−2</sup>, number of grains panicle<sup>−1</sup>, panicle length, grain yield and straw yield were recorded under SRI machine planting during <italic>kharif</italic> and <italic>rabi</italic>. The lowest grain yield and straw yield were recorded under wet seeding during both <italic>kharif</italic> and <italic>rabi</italic>.

A field experiment was conducted in the experimental farm of Zonal Agricultural Research Station, Dumka, Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi, Jharkhand during kharif seasons of 2015, 2016 and 2017 to study the effects of secondary and micronutrients on rice under rice-wheat cropping system in acid soil. The experimental findings have been interpreted in terms of grain yield, crop response (%), P, K, S and B -uptake by the crop. There were seven treatment combinations viz., NPK (RD) [@ (80 : 40 : 20) kg / ha], NPK + FYM [@ 3t / ha], NPK + lime [@ 4q / ha], NPK + S [@ 30kg / ha], NPK + S + B [@ 200 ppm foliar spray as borax], NPK + S + B + Si [@ 20 kg K - silicate / ha] and (NPK + FYM + S + B + Si). The experiment was laid out in RBD with three replications. It was found that the highest grain yield (40.60 q / ha) was obtained with the combined application of (NPK + FYM + S + B + Si), which also corresponded to the maximum crop response (24.4%). It was also found that application of micronutrients alone did not have significant effects on S and B-uptakes unless they were applied in combination with FYM. The highest S-uptake (7.40 kg/ha) and B-uptake (126.03 g/ha) were recorded with (NPK + FYM + S + B + Si). The highest P-uptake (13.74 kg/ha) and K-uptake (16.11 kg/ha) were obtained with (NPK + Lime).

Six field experiments were conducted at Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute, Aduthurai to evolve suitable zinc fertilization method for rice - rice (Oryza sativa L.) cropping system in Cauvery delta zone. The treatment includes: T1 : Control, T2 : 100 g zinc sulphate (ZnSO4)/cent in nursery alone., T3 : root dipping alone in 2 % zinc oxide (ZnO) solution, T4 : 25 kg ZnSO4 ha-1, T5 : 37.5 kg ZnSO4 ha-1, T6 : 25 kg ZnSO4 ha-1+ Farm Yard Manure (FYM) 12.5 t ha-1, T7 : 25 kg ZnSO4 ha-1 + Green Leaf Manure (GLM) 6.5 t ha-1, T8 : Tamil Nadu Agricultural University Micro Nutrient (TNAU MN) mixture 25 kg ha-1 as Enriched Farm Yard Manure (EFYM), T9 : TNAU MN mixture 37.5 kg ha-1 as EFYM, T10 : Foliar spray of 0.5% ZnSO4 + 1 % urea at tillering and panicle initiation stage, T11 : 100g ZnSO4 /cent in nursery alone + Foliar spray of 0.5 % ZnSO4 + 1 % urea at tillering and panicle initiation stage (T2+ T10), T12 : root dipping alone in 2 % ZnO solution + Foliar spray of 0.5 % ZnSO4 + 1 % urea at tillering and panicle initiation stage (T3 + T10), T13: 100 g ZnSO4 /cent in nursery alone + root dipping alone in 2 % ZnO solution + Foliar spray of 0.5 % ZnSO4 + 1 % urea at tillering and panicle initiation stage (T2 + T3 + T10). The treatments T5, T6, T7 and T9 were skipped in rabi season to know the residual effect of these treatments in the subsequent season. Among the treatment combinations, application of 25 kg ZnSO4 ha-1 + FYM 12.5 t ha-1 recorded higher grain yield in both kharif (6232 kg ha-1) and rabi (6236 kg ha-1) seasons. The same treatment combination recorded higher Zn content and Zn uptake as well. Regarding soil nutrient content, the same treatment recorded higher N, P and K content. This treatment was followed by application of 25 kg ZnSO4 ha-1 + green leaf manure 6.5 t ha-1. The experimental findings suggested that combination of organic and inorganic sources not only increased the yield but also improves soil health in Cauvery delta zone.

Two pots experiments were conducted at the Experimental Farm of El-Qassasin Horticultural Research Station, Agricultural Research Center, Ismailia Governorate, Egypt, during two successive seasons of 2016/2017 – 2017/2018, to investigate the effect of potassium silicate at (0, 4, 6, and 8 cm3/l) as a foliar spray under different levels of water salinity (tap water, 1000, 2000 and 3000 ppm) on Calendula officinalis L. plant. The experiment was performed in complete randomized block design as factorial experiment with 3 replicates. The obtained results cleared that using salinity levels decreased growth parameters (plant height, number of branches/plant, fresh and dry weights of herb/plant), flowering parameters (flower diameter, number of flowers/plant, fresh and dry weight of flowers (g/plant) during eight cuts and fresh and dry weight of flowers (g/plant/season)) and chemical constituents (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carbohydrate and carotenoid contents) compared to control. Moreover, the highest values in these parameters were registered by potassium silicate at 8 cm3/l concentration. Proline content increased in leaves with using saline water at 3000 ppm + potassium silicate at 8 cm3/l. Generally, it could be concluded that potassium silicate at 8 cm3/l, showed a uniform impact in alleviating inhibition of Calendula officinallis L. plant growth and productivity under moderate salinity stress condition.

Field experiments were conducted from 2015-16 to 2017-18 on a Typic Rhodustalfs (Alfisol) soils of Telangana at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Palem, Nagarkurnool, Southern Telangana Zone, India to validate targeted yield based fertilizer prescription equations which developed for hybrid castor by adopting eight treatments viz., Blanket recommendation (100% RDF:80:40:30 kg N, P2O5 and K2O ha-1), Blanket+5 t ha-1 of vermin-compost (VC), STCR-Target yield with NPK alone at 25q ha-1, STCR-Target yield with IPNS at 25q ha-1, STCR-Target yield with NPK alone at 30q ha-1, STCR-Target yield with IPNS at 30q ha-1, Farmer’s practice (40:20:0kg N, P2O5 and K2O ha-1) and Absolute control (without inorganic and organic fertilizers). The findings of these test verification trials clearly revealed that the percent achievement of the aimed yield target was within + 10 percent variation confirming the validity of the equations. Using STCR-NPK@25 and 30q ha-1 recorded significantly higher seed (20.74 and 22.30q ha-1) and stalk (24.63 and 26.36q ha-1) yield over blanket recommendation (19.40 and 23.13 q ha-1), while STCR-IPNS at 25 and 30 q ha-1recorde relatively higher seed (20.98 and 22.69q ha-1) and stalk (25.88 and 27.13q ha-1) yield over STCR-NPK alone treatments. The magnitude of built-up was higher with STCR-IPNS treatments as compared to STCR-NPK alone, blanket recommendations, farmer’s practice and absolute control.

Field experiments were conducted to study the influence of foliar nutrition on pod setting percentage, yield and economics of red gram (Cajanus cajan (L.)  under the irrigated condition at Regional Research Station, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Paiyur - 635 112, Tamil Nadu, India in Kharif season of 2016-17. To study the effect of different nutrient sources the following treatments were imposed. The treatments include the foliar application of 2% DAP twice at flowering and 15 days thereafter first spray (T1), Foliar application of TNAU pulse wonder at 5 kg/ha at peak flowering (T2), Foliar application of 0.5% MAP twice at flowering and 15 days thereafter first spray (T3). Foliar application of CCC 200 ppm twice at flowering and 15 days thereafter (T4) and Control (water spray)(T5). Among the treatments, it was concluded that application of 0.5% mono ammonium phosphate (MAP) at flowering and 15 days after the first spray recorded the higher grain and stalk yield of 1522 and 6222 kg ha-1 in red gram respectively and also recorded a higher gross income of Rs. 91320, net income of Rs. 50520 and B: C ratio of 2.2. Further, the yield increase was 25% higher yield over control (water spray) and 12% higher over-application of CCC 200 ppm twice at flowering and 15 days after the first spray.
