The Floresta Nacional Mário Xavier (FNMX) is a reserve located in the Municipality of Seropédica, State of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. It is an area with intense anthropic activity and is one of the last remaining forests of the Baixada Fluminense. An inventory of the anurans of the FNMX was performed and the results compared with those of a previous species list for the area. Thirteen excursions were conducted, totaling more than 416 hours of sampling effort. Twenty-six species belonging to five families were found: Bufonidae (one species), Hylidae (15 species), Leptodactylidae (six species), Microhylidae (three species) and Phyllomedusidae (one species). Six species on the previous list were not found in this study. Sphaenorhynchus planicola is a new record for the area. Two species are endangered: Chiasmocleis lacrimae and Physalaemus soaresi, the latter being considered critically endangered by the List of Brazilian Fauna Threatened with Extinction.

We report a female Physalaemus soaresi Izecksohn, 1965 collected at the Atlantic rainforest of Serra do Mendanha, municipality of Rio de Janeiro, state of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. Known only from two localities (and probably extinct in one), P. soaresi is considered a threatened species in Brazil and presumably threatened in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Despite the new record, P. soaresi still fits into the status of endangered and requires the full protection of all areas where it occurs.

The Brazilian Atlantic Forest is one of the richest and most threatened biomes on Earth. In the state of Rio de Janeiro it is presently reduced to less than 20% of its original extension, and faunal lists are needed for several areas. Here we present a species list of amphibians and reptiles for the Estação Ecológica Estadual do Paraíso (EEEP), a forest reserve located in the central portion of Rio de Janeiro state. The list is based on both primary (gathered during a short-term survey by the authors) and secondary data (obtained from a local reference collection). A total of 30 amphibian (of which six are endemic to the state) and 29 reptile species were recorded from the area (of which 25 and 13, respectively, were obtained by primary data). No threatened or presumably threatened species were present among the herpetofauna of the EEEP.

Paragenidens, a new genus of ariid catfishes is proposed to accommodate Arius grandoculis, a species previously assigned to the genus Potamarius. Paragenidens grandoculis is an endemic ariid catfish categorized as Critically Endangered and probably Extinct from coastal lacustrine systems from Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro states, southeastern Brazil. After more than 50 years without records of the species, new recent fieldwork revealed that the species is extinct at lagoa Juparanã, but still can be found at lagoa Nova in Linhares municipality, Espírito Santo state. Here, Paragenidens is described based on morphological and molecular evidence. In addition to its generic reassignment, the species is redescribed, and comments on its phylogenetic relationships, biogeography and conservation are presented.

We add 32 new records of species to the existing checklist of birds of the coastal island of Ilha Grande, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Notably, seven of these species are endemic to the Atlantic Forest. Sporophila falcirostris is globally Vulnerable and Haematopus palliatus is Near Threatened in Brazil. We also report the second record of Agelaioides badius from Rio de Janeiro state. We also compare our species list with lists of birds of Ilhabela and Anchieta islands. While some of the newly recorded species are probably non-resident to Ilha Grande or represent range expansions, most species occur in Rio de Janeiro throughout the year. Thus, our records may be a consequence of the surveying new sites on the island but also recent colonization. Our study increases the number of bird species known to occur on Ilha Grande from 222 to 254, which is one-third of the species reported from Rio de Janeiro state. We recorded 13 species threatened by extinction at regional, national or global levels.

Abstract: The Serra da Bocaina National Park (SBNP) is a large remnant of Atlantic Forest located within an endangered biodiversity hotspot, which contributes to the connectivity among protected areas in the region. Despite the ecological importance of the SBNP, its bat fauna is poorly-known, and no comprehensive inventory is available. The present study provides an updated list of the bat species found in the SBNP. The four-year study was based on a capture-mark-recapture approach at four sites within the park, in the municipality of Paraty, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. A total of 22 bat species were recorded, representing two families, Phyllostomidae (n = 19 species) and Vespertillionidae (n = 3). This added 14 species to the known bat fauna of the SBNP, which is hereby updated to 24 species, including Dermanura cinerea Gervais, 1856, Platyrrhinus recifinus (Thomas, 1901), and Myotis ruber (É. Geoffroy, 1806), which are listed as endangered in Rio de Janeiro state. The specimen of Trinycteris nicefori (Sanborn, 1949) captured in the present study is the first record of the occurrence of this species in Rio de Janeiro state. This record extends the geographic range of the species by approximately 650 km to the southeast. Additional inventories, in particular at poorly-studied Atlantic Forest sites, combined with environmental suitability analyses, and taxonomic and biogeographic data, are urgently required to elucidate the distribution of many Brazilian bat species, such as T. nicefori.

Species inventories are useful tools to improve conservation strategies, especially in highly threatened biomes such as the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Here we present a species list of amphibians and reptiles for the Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu (REGUA), a forest reserve located in the central portion of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. The list results from an extensive sampling effort that lasted ten years. A total of 73 amphibian (of which ten are endemic to the state) and 37 reptile species was recorded from the area. Five amphibian species are presently categorized by the IUCN as “data-deficient”, two as “near threatened” and one as “endangered”, whereas one reptile species is categorized as “vulnerable”. Our results showed that REGUA harbors about one-third of the herpetofauna species presently known to occur in state of Rio de Janeiro, adding more information to previously published lists of amphibians and reptiles from localities within the Serra dos =rgãos region, and highlighting the importance of this area for conservation of amphibians and reptiles of the Atlantic Forest.

Macrelmis is a genus distributed in the Palearctic, Nearctic and Neotropical regions. Currently there are 40 species, 20being recorded from Brazil but only two from Rio de Janeiro State. Herein two new species of Macrelmis are describedand figured: Macrelmis fluminensis sp. nov. and Macrelmis friburguensis sp. nov. A new record of Macrelmis isis from Rio de Janeiro State is given.

We conducted a taxonomic study of the fern genera Lomaria, Lomariocycas, and Parablechnum (Blechnaceae, Polypodiopsida) in southern and southeastern Brazil (Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul). We recognized six species (one of Lomaria, one of Lomariocycas, and four of Parablechnum), three of which have a broad neotropical distribution and three that are endemic to Brazil. Four new records are reported for four species in different regions or states from Brazil, and a new record for Guyana. Taxonomic descriptions, synonymies, lectotypifications, a neotypification (Parablechnum usterianum), geographical distributions, and comments are given for all species occurring in the study region, as well as a key for the identification of the Brazilian species of Parablechnum.

Novos conceitos sobre o planejamento e urbanização das cidades têm incentivado cada vez mais, a criação e manutenção de áreas verdes públicas ou privadas, que consequentemente, representam importantes zonas de alimentação e abrigo para diversas espécies de vespas sociais. Mas apesar dos esforços e da representatividade da região Sudeste, o conhecimento sobre a riqueza e abundância de vespas sociais no Estado do Rio de Janeiro ainda é limitado. O presente estudo visou avaliar a composição da fauna de vespas sociais em fitofisionomias urbanas no centro da cidade de Barra Mansa-RJ, área compreendida pelo campus Barra Mansa UBM. Duas áreas foram amostradas durante 12 meses, campo antrópico e área reflorestada, através de busca ativa com rede entomológica, armadilhas Möericke e armadilhas aromáticas. Foram coletados 148 espécimes pertencentes a três tribos, quatro gêneros e 17 espécies. A busca ativa registrou 70,7% das espécies amostradas. A tribo Epiponini apresentou a maior riqueza de espécies, sendo Polybia chrysothorax Lichtenstein e Polybia erythrothoraxla Richards registradas pela primeira vez para o Estado do Rio de Janeiro. No campo antrópico foi observada maior diversidade (H’ = 1,890), equabilidade (J = 0,7605) e menor dominância (D(1/D) = 0,2124), enquanto a área reflorestada obteve-se H’ = 1,582, J = 0,6366 e D(1/D) = 0,3465. A configuração e o tamanho da área reflorestada no campus Barra Mansa do UBM são elementos insuficientes para restringir o trânsito de espécies ou segregar comunidades quando considerado o campo antrópico, desta forma permitindo ainda, que as espécies possam ser igualmente amostradas entre as áreas.Checklist of Social Wasps (Vespidae: Polistinae) in Two Green Urban Areas in the Municipality of Barra Mansa, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Abstract. New concepts on city planning and urbanization have progressively encouraged the creation and maintenance of public or private green areas, which are important feeding and shelter zones for several species of social wasps. However, in spite of the sampling effort and representativeness of southeastern Brazil, knowledge of richness and abundance of social wasps in Rio de Janeiro is still poor. The present study aimed at inventorying the fauna of social wasps in urban phytophysiognomies in downtown Barra Mansa, state of Rio de Janeiro, within the campus of Barra Mansa University. We sampled two areas for 12 months - a human-modified grassland and a reforested area, through active search with insect nests, Möericke traps, and aromatic traps. We collected 148 wasps of three tribes, four genera, and 17 species. Through active search we recorded 70.7% of the species sampled. The tribe Epiponini showed the highest species richness, and Polybia chrysothorax Lichtenstein and Polybia erythrothoraxla Richards were recorded for the first time in the state of Rio de Janeiro. In the anthropic field it was observed greater diversity (H’ = 1,890), equitability (J = 0,7605), and minor dominance (D(1/D) = 0,2124), while in the reforested area was obtained H’ = 1,582, J = 0,6366 e D(1/D) = 0,3465. The configuration and size of the reforested area in the campus Barra Mansa (UBM) are insufficient elements to restrict the movement of species or segregate communities when considering the anthropic field, thereby still allowing that species could also be sampled between the areas.

We present the first lizard species list for the municipality of Juruti, state of Pará, Brazil. The list was drawn up as a result of data obtained from specimens deposited in the Herpetological Collection of the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi and from inventories conducted in 2008-2011. Sampling methods included pitfall traps with drift fences and time constrained searches. We considered the data collected by other researchers, incidental encounters and records of dead individuals on the road. We recorded 33 species, 26 genera and ten families. Norops tandai was the most abundant species. Compared with the other regions of Amazonia, the region of Juruti presented a large number of lizards. However, further studies with an increase in the sampling effort, could prove this area to be richer in lizards than that observed so far.
