The oxidation kinetics and the effects of alloying on the oxidation behaviors of copper-based bulk metallic glasses were studied. The oxidation kinetics, oxide compositions, and structures were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy. Both the TGA results and the XPS depth profile measurements showed that the oxidation resistance of Cu60Zr30Ti10 bulk metallic glass was improved by adding Hf, but it deteriorated when it was alloyed with Y. The oxide phases were found to be ZrO2, Cu2O, and CuO in samples heated at 573 K while an additional metallic Cu phase was detected in the ones heated at 773 K. A porous oxide structure was observed in the (Cu0.6Zr0.3Ti0.1)98Y2 metallic glass oxidized at 673 K, and the poor oxidation resistance of the alloy is attributed to the porous structure.

To investigate the maintainability of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs), two Lanthanum base metallic glass were first characterized by using X-ray diffraction and then machined by single point diamond turning (SPDT). With increasing depths of cut (DOC) from 1 um to 5 um, surface finish was improved. However, surface finish is not improved significantly when the DOC is further increased.

Fe-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are a unique class of materials that are attracting attention in a wide variety of applications owing to their physical properties. Several studies have investigated and designed the relationships between alloy composition and thermal properties of BMGs using an artificial neural network (ANN). The limitation of the wide-scale use of these models is that the required composition is yet to be found despite numerous case studies. To address this issue, we trained an ANN to design Fe-based BMGs that predict the thermal properties. Models were trained using only the composition of the alloy as input and were created from a database of more than 150 experimental data of Fe-based BMGs from relevant literature. We adopted these ANN models to design BMGs with thermal properties to satisfy the intended purpose using particle swarm optimization. A melt spinner was employed to fabricate the designed alloys. X-ray diffraction and differential thermal analysis tests were used to evaluate the specimens.

The oxidation kinetics of Cu60Zr30Ti10 bulk metallic glass and its crystalline counterpart were studied in oxygen environment over the temperature range of 573–773 K. The oxidation kinetics, measured with thermogravimetric analysis, of the metallic glass follows a linear rate law between 573 and 653 K and a parabolic rate law between 673 and 733 K. It was also found that the oxidation activation energy of metallic glass is lower than that of its crystalline counterpart. The x-ray diffraction pattern showed that the oxide layer is composed of Cu2O, CuO, ZrO2, and metallic Cu. Cu enrichment on the topmost oxide layer of the metallic glass oxidized at 573 K was revealed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy while there was a decrease in Cu content in the innermost oxide layer. The oxide surface morphologies observed from scanning electron microscopy showed that ZrO2 granules formed at low temperatures while whiskerlike copper oxides formed at higher temperatures.

We present evidence that a minor adjustment in Zr/Ni concentration ratio can dramatically enhance the plasticity of monolithic Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) from about 2.2% for Zr65Al8Ni10Cu17 BMG to 14% for Zr62Al8Ni13Cu17 BMG. No deformation-induced nanocrystallization appears in a 55% strained Zr62Al8Ni13Cu17 BMG without catastrophic failure while pre-existing nanocrystals in Zr65Al8Ni10Cu17 BMG result in its limited plasticity. Also note that the stability of Zr62Al8Ni13Cu17 BMG against crystallization upon deformation is somewhat higher than that of Zr65Al8Ni10Cu17 BMG. As determined by x-ray diffraction using synchrotron radiation, the enhanced plasticity of Zr62Al8Ni13Cu17 BMG seems to be related to the relative homogeneity of the amorphous structure.

The oxidation behaviour of developed Fe80Cr20 alloy and commercial ferritic steel at 1173 - 1373 K in air is studied. Effects of crystallite size and titanium implantation on the oxidation behaviour of specimens were analyzed based on oxide morphologies and microstructures. Oxide scales characterisations of specimen after oxidized were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The surface morphology of oxide scales were examined with scanning electronic microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The rate constant of oxidation were determined using Wagner method. The results show that crystallite size and titanium implantation has remarkably enhanced the oxidation resistance. The oxidation kinetics indicate that the developed Fe80Cr20 as the finer crystallite size both unimplanted and implanted specimens show better performance.

Different bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) were prepared in ductile Cu47.5Zr47.5Al5, Zr62Cu15.4Ni12.6Al10, and brittle Zr55Ni5Al10Cu30 alloys by controlling solidification conditions. The achieved microstructures were characterized by x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, transmission electron microscopy, and synchrotron- based high-energy x-ray diffraction. Monolithic BMGs obtained by high-temperature injection casting are brittle, while BMGs bearing some nanocrystals with the size of 3 to 7 nm and 2 to 4 nm, obtained by low-temperature injection casting and in situ suction casting, respectively, exhibit good plasticity. It indicates that the microstructures of BMGs are closely affected by the solidification conditions. Controlling the solidification conditions could improve the plasticity of BMGs.
