ABSTRACTZnO and ZnO/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposites were synthesized by mechanical-assisted thermal decomposition method. The results show that this method is a simple and low cost method to prepare ZnO and ZnO/ ZnFe2O4 nanocomposites. The nanorod's shape and size have been identified through SEM and TEM. The photocatalytic activity of ZnO and ZnO/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposites were tested by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous medium under almost-visible light and the efficiency of the catalyst has been discussed in detail.

Abstract In this work, visible light response CeO2/CdS decorated cotton fabrics as durable and facile recyclable composite photocatalysts were fabricated for photo-degradation of methylene blue (MB). First of all, amino-functionalized CeO2/CdS nanoparticles were synthesized through a fast, efficient and low-cost coprecipitation method. Subsequently, the as-prepared CeO2/CdS nanoparticles were immobilized on aldehyde-functionalized cotton fabric surfaces as composite photocatalysts via "amine-aldehyde" chemical reaction. The surface microstructure and chemical composition of the CeO2/CdS decorated cotton fabric (CeO2/CdS-CF) were characterized by SEM, FTIR and XPS, respectively. The results showed that CeO2/CdS nanoparticles were successfully anchored on the surface of cotton fabric, and distributed uniformly. As expected, the as-prepared CeO2/CdS-CF exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity, which can degrade MB within 90 min with a degradation efficiency of 93.8% under simulated sunlight irradiation, due to the CeO2/CdS heterostructure with the efficient photo-generated charge transfer and separation. In addition, the degradation efficiency remained above 90.3% after five successive degradation cycles, indicating that the obtained CeO2/CdS-CF possessed excellent stability and recyclability. This work opened up a facile preparation way for the fabrication of durable and recyclable composite photocatalysts, and has a promising application in treating dye contaminated wastewater.

Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue was investigated using nanocrystalline ZnO prepared by chemical precipitation and thermal decomposition routes. In both preparation routes zinc acetate dihydrate was used as the precursor. In the case of precipitation route, sodium hydroxide was used as the precipitating agent at room temperature, but in thermal decomposition method the precursor was just calcined at 450°C for 30 min. The structural and morphological properties were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The sample prepared by precipitation route exhibits higher photocatalytic activity than that by thermal decomposition method and the reasons for the enhanced photocatalytic activity have been discussed in detail.

The nanosize magnetic particles were synthesized by thermal decomposition method with size distribution in the range of 10 ~ 30 nm. Different category and quantity of surfactants were used modifying the surface of the synthesized nanoparticles to control the particles’ shape and size. Multi-shapes, such as uniformity cubic, mixture of spherical and cubic, and the similar chick footmarks, were acquired in our experiment by different surfactants. It indicates the surfactant is a key factor for the size and shape of particles. The surfactants of PVP and oleylamine made the particle shape be uniformity cubic; However, the particle partly behaved as spherical shape in the case of using PVP and oleic acid as surfactants.
