AbstractCrystal orientation (texture) is an important parameter in the hydrogen absorption and desorption properties of various materials. In this study, we investigate the formation of magnesium nanorod arrays with crystal orientations that are not normally observed in conventional Mg thin films. Mg nanorods are produced using an oblique angle deposition technique through a physical self-assembly process. In this study sputtering and thermal evaporation systems are utilized for the growth of Mg nanorods and thin films on silicon wafer pieces. We present a detailed X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analysis. It is discussed that under oblique incidence, evolution of crystal orientations with lower adatom mobility are promoted due to the shadowing effect.

Correctly c-axis oriented HgBa 2 CaCu 2 O 6+δ thin films have been produced on (100) MgO single crystal substrates and characterized. Pulsed laser deposition has been exploited to deposit Hg-free Re-doped precursor which then underwent synthesis in evacuated and sealed quartz tubes. X-ray diffraction pattern of the precursor target shows the expected composition of oxides. Scanning electron microscopy analysis have been performed on the surface of the precursor film. Hg-1212 films have been analyzed by θ-2θ Bragg-Brentano X-ray diffractometry. The patterns show little contributions in composition of Hg-1223 phase. The films exhibit a transition temperature >120 K with zero-resistance at around 115 K.

AbstractIt is known that oblique angle deposition (or glancing angle deposition) can create 3D architectures that are otherwise difficult to produce using the conventional lithographic techniques. The technique relies on a self-assembly mechanism originated from a physical shadowing effect during deposition. In this paper we show examples of 3D nanostructures obtained by this oblique angle deposition on a templated substrate with regularly spaced pillar seeds. We show that common to this technique is the phenomenon of side-way growth on the seeds. The side-way growth leads to a fan-like structure at the initial stages of growth if the incident oblique angle is fixed during growth. Simulations based on a steering effect due to the attractive force between the incoming atom and the existing atoms on the surface produce a fanlike structure similar to that observed experimentally. We show that a two-phase substrate rotation scheme during deposition can dramatically reduce this fan-out effect and can lead to uniform and isolated columns.

Among the ReBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x (ReBCO, Re=rare earth) cuprate family the NdBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x system (NdBCO) is known to have the highest critical temperature and critical current. Moreover, in comparison with the YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x compound, NdBCO shows a better surface stability and morfology that are basic requirements for the realization of high temperature superconducting (HTS) devices. We have investigated the fabrication procedure of NdBCO films on (001) SrTiO 3 substrates using a dc sputtering technique in high oxygen pressure. The effect of several deposition parameters on the structural and superconducting properties of the NdBCO thin films, has been investigated. The x-ray diffraction patterns showed that the deposited films were c-axis oriented without any impurity phase. The surface morfology was studied by a standard Scanning Electron Microscopy analysis (SEM). T c (ρ=0) ≥ 91 K and J c (77 K ) ≤ 0.6 106 A/cm 2 have been obtained at the optimized sputtering conditions.

We have grown epitaxial Pr 1-x Ca x Ba 2 Cu 3 O 7-y(0≤x≤0.5) thin films on SrTiO 3 and Yttrium stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates by pulsed laser deposition at different temperatures. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed epitaxial growth on YSZ substrates for x=0 along the a and c axis directions for T=570° C , where first the film grows oriented along a-axis and afterward, it undergoes a shift in the orientation, growing in the c-axis direction from then on. The cell parameters were c=1.166 nm and a~b=0.386 nm .

Lithium niobate thin films have been deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates by the Pechini method from metal carboxylate gels and heat-treated at temperatures ranging from 400 to 600°C. The thermal decomposition of the metal carboxylate precursor gels has been studied by differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetry. The products derived from calcination of the gels at different temperatures have been characterized by Fourier transform infrared, Roman spectrum and X-ray diffraction. Scanning electron microscopy analysis shows the surface of the films to be smooth, dense and crack-free. Electric properties measurement indicates that the LiNbO3 films demonstrate a ferroelectric hysteresis loop. The remanent polarization (Pr) and coercive field (Ec) are 17.89 μC/cm2 and 35.23 kV/cm, respectively.

AbstractHighly ordered self-assembly organized silica meso-structured architectures have attracted increasing attention because these materials provide a rich source for scientific research and technological applications. This approach to meso-structured materials has been extended to non-silica oxides, especially transition-metal-oxides which might promise applications involving electron transfer or magnetic interactions. We report the syntheses of transition-metal-oxides meso-structured thin films (MSTF), such as TiO2, V2O5, Fe2O3 and Nb2O5, using a surfactant templating processing with spin coating method. X-ray diffraction patterns of the films showed that the films generally oriented in a lamellar structure. The phase transferring in V205 MSTF was also investigated.
