ABSTRACTSol-gel synthesis can be used for generating nano particles from a variety of compositions. In order to avoid aggregation and undesired gelation, it is necessary to react the particle surfaces with ligands reducing their interaction but allowing the incorporation into desired matrices. Three examples (semiconducting and metal quantum dots, ZrO2 and Al2O3 containing composites) are described, their properties and some applications for optics and protective coatings are discussed.

In this paper, we prepared BaAl2O4 and Co:BaAl2O4 nanoparticles from aqueous solution of metal nitrates containing citric acid as a chelating agent by sol-gel method. The gel was heat-treated at temperatures ranging from 710°C to 1000°C. The heat-treated powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), infrared spectra (IR) and luminescence spectroscopy. From the results of the characterization, we find the prepared powders are pure nano-particles of BaAl2O4 after heat-treated at 900°C temperature. The emission spectra of Co: BaAl2O4 in the visible region indicates the existence of Co2+ in the tetrahedral sites of BaAl2O4 nano-crystal.

This paper describes the synthesis of CdS nanoparticles by sol-gel route using organic molecules as gelatin media. At70ᵒC the CdS nanoparticles are formed with particle size 75.28nm.The nanoparticles are characterized by XRD,SEM, AFM and FTIR. The effect of nanoparticles on activity of liver enzymes (GPT and GOT)is also studied by using different concentration of NPs. It is found that the activity of GPT and GOT enzymes increases with decreases in nano particles concentrations and decreases in inhibition percentage. The greater activation of nano was demonstrated at concentration (10-1 M).
