AbstractInelastic light scattering by optical phonons and the temperature dependent electrical conductivity, Hall constant and photosensitivity were studied in oriented CdGeAs2 crystals grown by ultra-low gradient freeze technique from near-stoichiometric melts. Observation of the clear polarization dependence of the inelastic light scattering spectra by optical phonons combined with the absence of any dependence of the intensity and frequency shift of the observed lines with mapping measurements in 300 μm steps indicated the high optical quality and homogeneity of these single crystals. It is shown that surface-barrier structures using these single crystals may be used as wide-band detectors for natural light, as well as selective photoanalyzers for linearly polarized radiation.

Surface contaminations can critically affect the performance of optical surfaces, in particular with respect to light scattering, optical losses, and laser stability. Thus, avoiding contaminations and reducing contamination-induced effects is of particular interest in the manufacturing of optical systems. By combining a specific thin film design with a tailored structural design, contamination-resistant coatings with a high optical quality can be realized. Most important is the balance of self-cleaningand light scattering-relevant surface roughness components.

The resonant properties of Raman scattering in Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8-x single crystals for four diagonal phonons and electronic scattering as well have been investigated for different polarizations. The resonance profiles for the phonons were of similar character, but the resonant profiles of the two components of electronic scattering, by contrast, were different.
