The status of blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus) fishery in Lasongko Bay is detected overfishing and critical, so it needs to be managed properly. This paper was aimed to determine the potential and problems of sustainability use of the crab and establish strategic management based on bioecology aspects. Bioecological data on the crab were collected in 2006, and from 2013 to 2014 in Lasongko Bay. Research result of indicated high potential and sustainable of use of crab fishery in the bay. Arising problems to threat the sustainability were over-fishing, small size crab and ovigerous female catch, localized fishing ground, and unfriendly environmentally fishing activities. Some management strategies must be done to support and ensure the sustainability management of the crab in Lasongko Bay, i.e. the minimum legal size (for males >109.8 mm-CW and females >115.7 mm-CW), not catching ovigerous female crabs, and reducing use of traps up to 50%. Restocking and establishing crab sanctuary could be also important to enhance the aforesaid management strategies.

The blue swimming crab (BSC) fishery in Tiworo Strait has been heavily exploited since two decades ago when its worldwide demand and price was very high. Study on population aspects of this organism in this waters is limited. The aim of present study was to investigate growth patterns, population stock status, and size at first gonad maturity of Portunus pelagicus. One of the main fishing ground of BSC around Tiworo Strait waters is at Bangko and Gala Islands. Samples of BSC were taken monthly using gillnet and collapsible trap. Each sample taken was identified its sex, measured its carapace width, and weighed. Data collected from fishing ground of BSC were analyzed to find out growth patterns, population stock status using spawning potential ratio (SPR) method, and the first gonad maturity (CW50). The results of study showed that growth patterns of BSC male and female following isometric growth patterns (b=0) (P<0.05). It was found out that SPR of BSC from both fishing ground was 22.46% and 23.71%, respectively which indicates that population stock status of BSC in Tiworo strait waters is “moderate level” (SPR > 20%). The size at first gonad maturity (CW50) was attained at carapace width of 9.16 cm for male and 10.16 cm for female. Those imply that BSCs allowed to be caught should be >10 cm.

Fishing effort enhancement would put pressure on blue swimming crab resources and its ecosystem. The objective of this study was to determine the spatial distribution based on the size of the carapace width (CW), abundance, temperature, salinity, depth, and fishing intensity in Pati waters which was divided into two zones (zones 1=nearshore, zone 2=offshore). The result showed that the average of carapace width in zone 1 to zone 2 was significantly different (p <0.05), as well as between males and females. Average number of individual (abundance) was significantly different according to fishing areas and sex (p <0.05). The average of water temperature in zone 1 was higher than in zone 2, salinity in zone 1 was smaller than in zone 2, and the water depth in zone 1 was shallower than in zone 2. The higher the crab catch intensity leaded to the smaller the abundance and size of carapace width. Alternative management strategies were proposed such as to divert fishing grounds from coastal waters to offshore during low productivity season, to uphold rules on minimum legal size for catching (Lm = 107 mm), to release of berried females catch, and to reduce accretion rate of gear and fishing fleet mainly in the coastal zone waters.

Keywords: blue swimming crab, carapace widht (CW), abundance, intensity of fishing

The blue swimming crab in the waters of Lancang Island is indicated as being overfished. Hence, the major challenge is managing its utilization in a proper manner. The purpose of this study is to explore the water's characteristics which is suitable for blue swimming crab fishing. Accordingly, the potential fishing ground around Lancang Island waters can be mapped spatially as an initial effort for species preservation. Geospatial analysis was applied to assess the physical parameters of the existing habitat. The results show that parameters such as MPT, TDS, brightness, phosphate, nitrate, depth and substrate types were remarkably suitable to support the growth of blue swimming crabs. Meanwhile, parameters such as salinity, DO, and temperature show lower quality which implied that the habitat is less suitable. However, the result of weighting and reclassification conclude that Lancang island waters is a decent habitat for blue swimming crab. Catch data show that 40% blue swimming crabs have small carapace size (7-11.83 cm) which is undersized and prohibited by law. Furthermore, about 68% of catch are quite light (30-147 gr) and the sex ratio of males to females was 1:2. It was also revealed that approximately 35% of female species were carrying eggs (BEF/barried female). Keywords: geospatial, fishing ground, suitability, Lancang Island, blue swimming crab.

Exploitation rate of the blue swimming crab (BSC) in Indonesian Fisheries Management Area (FMA) 712 is over-optimum level in 2016. Stocks concern in sustainable management is needed as an effort to maintain its availability. The objective of this study is to identify the stock unit of BSC based on Truss Network Analysis (TNA) of morphometric characters in FMA 712. The BSC was collect in five different locations, i.e. East Lampung, Lancang Island, Cirebon, Rembang, and Southern Madura. Measurements on TNA were carried out at 14 landmark points with 29 characters in carapace to analyze its morphometric characters. The cluster analysis showed that TNA method revealed two stocks units of BSC in FMA 712. The first stock was the BSC population of Southern Madura, and the other stock was the other four population. The longest Euclidean distance was found at Southern Madura indicating similarity level with other populations was low. The discriminant analysis demonstrated the different result. There were three group populations, which every population in one group were able to represent the other population, namely Lancang Island-Cirebon, East Lampung-Rembang, and Southern Madura. Regarding to this study, it is recommended to manage BSC in Southern Madura separately.

Blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus) is an important economical fishery commodity for fishermen in Banten Bay that are caught using gill nets and collapsible traps. The increasing of fishing pressure has highly potential to reduce the quality of the catch as exposed in previous studies. However, the comprehensive, and time series analysis of the previous research results have not been conducted. The purpose of this study is to analyze the variations of blue swimming crab caught in Banten Bay through a combination of meta-analysis techniques, fishing trials and field obser-vations to determine the effect of fishing activities on swimming crab sizes, and evaluate the status of swimming crab fisheries in Banten Bay. Standard mean difference from 10 different studies was used as a meta-analysis parameter. The results of the meta-analysis showed that fishing activities were conducted from 2004 to 2018 had a significant effect on the decreasing of the swimming crab size. The average of swimming crab carapace width caught in 2019 approximately 121.66 mm. The proportion of legal swimming crabs in 2014, 2015 and 2019 was more than 80%, so that the status of swimming crab fisheries in Banten Bay is still environmentally friendly. Keywords: carapace width, meta analysis, fisheries, Portunus pelagicus, blue swimming crab
