The Korean clausal-connective nuntey, a particle indicating ‘background’, is analysed in terms of the ‘my-side-revealing’ practice that projects ‘escape trajectories’ in which an incipiently formulated action is foreshown to be retractable. For instance, in response to an offer, incipient non-compliance, marked by nuntey, may be leveraged into acceptance; here, the speaker emerges as a ‘markedly self-sufficient’ beneficiary who ostensibly orients to minimising the cost of burden on the part of the offer-maker. The offer-maker, on his/her part, emerges as a ‘markedly other-attentive’ benefactor through deferentially overriding the recipient’s nuntey-marked account adumbrating a dispreferred response. Across different contexts, the nuntey-marked response, with its expansion-relevant character, embodies the speaker’s normative orientation, furnishing the opportunity for the participants to manage face, morality, and solidary relationships. Cross-linguistic implications are noted with reference to the self-indulgent practice of ‘distancing’, with the hearer being mobilised as a co-member to accountably co-leverage the current action with upgraded affiliation.

This chapter provides an informal rationalist model of state formation as an exchange between a central authority and a population. In the model, the central authority protects the population against external threats and the population disarms and pays taxes. The model specifies the conditions under which the exchange is self-enforcing, meaning that the parties prefer the exchange to alternative courses of action. These conditions—costly but winnable interstate war—are historically rare, and the cost of such wars can rise beyond the population’s willingness to sacrifice. At this point, the population prefers to avoid war rather than fight it and may prefer an alternative institution to the state if that institution can prevent war and reduce the level of extraction. Thus the modern centralized state is self-undermining rather than self-enforcing. A final section addresses alternative explanations for state formation.

A significant criterion for the functioning of an assembly line is to minimize the cost of manufactured products, for the achievement of which approaches are currently used that apply computer modeling and the hierarchical principle of product assembly, the approach, as well as taking into account the probabilistic nature of the assembly operations. An overview of scientific research aimed at solving these problems is given. An approach has been proposed that makes it possible to assess the efficiency of production in the self-reproduction of automation tools by the criterion of minimizing the cost of manufactured products.

Structure and principle of a new kind of diphase opposition giant magnetostrictive self-sensing actuator (SSA for short) is introduced, for which a kind of double outputs high-precision NC stable voltage power is designed. With the method of combining with the hardware design and the software setting, the controllability and reliability of the actuator are greatly improved. And the whole design becomes more reasonable, which saves the cost and improves the practicability. In addition, based on the micro controller unit (MCU) with high-speed control, the scheme design of the real-time separation circuit for dynamic balance signal can effectively identify out and pick up the self-sensing signal which changes from foreign pressure feed back. Then the SSA real-time, dynamic and accurately control is realized. The experiment results show that the voltage power can high-speed and accurately output both output voltages with high current, and that the self-sensing signal decoupling circuit can isolate the self-sensing signals without distortion

Numerous ancillary techniques detecting HPV DNA or mRNA are viewed as competitors or ancillary techniques to test Papanicolaou. However, no technique is perfect because sensitivity increases at the cost of specificity. Various methods have been applied to resolve this issue by using many examination results, such as classification and regression trees and supervised artificial neural networks. In this article, 1258 cases with results from test Pap, HPV DNA, HPV mRNA, and p16 were used to evaluate the performance of the self-organizing map (SOM). An artificial neural network has three advantages: it is unsupervised, can tolerate missing data, and produces topographical maps. The results of the SOM application were encouraging and produced maps depicting the important tests.

Most previous studies regarding self-punishment have focused on the correlation between moral emotion and self-punishment. Only a few studies have attempted to understand self-punishment from the perspective of seeking forgiveness, and no study has yet directly tested whether wrongdoers’ self-punishment promotes others to forgive the wrongdoers. In three studies, the participants judged the wrongdoers’ self-punishment behaviors following an unfair allocation and reported the extent to which they forgave the wrongdoers. The results demonstrated that self-punishment did promote forgiveness in both the direct (Studies 1 and 2) and indirect reciprocity (Study 3) contexts. Consistent with costly signaling theory, the costlier the self-punishment was, the stronger the effect it had on forgiveness. Moreover, communicative self-punishment had a better effect than silent self-punishment when the cost was relatively high in the direct-reciprocity studies. These findings can guide us regarding how to address a damaged relationship via self-punishment when compensation is not feasible or acceptable.

The self-sensing magnetic bearing can reduce the cost and the axial size of the magnetic bearing and increase its reliability. A mixed-kernel least squares support vector machines (LS-SVM) forecasting model is proposed for self-sensing technique of a hybrid magnetic bearing. The structure and mathematical model of the radial-axial hybrid magnetic bearing are introduced. Based on the principle of the mixed-kernel LS-SVM, the nonlinear forecasting model between the current and the displacement which realizes the displacement self-sensing control is built through genetic algorithm. Simulation has done to verify the validity and feasibility of proposed method.

Radio-signalling methods are sometimes applied to indicate or record temperature, pressure, humidity, and wind velocity, where the installation of an ordinary meteorological observing station would present difficulties due to the inaccessibility of the desired observing point. Such methods may also be applied to free balloon ascents for sounding the atmosphere, in which case the use of radio-signalling gives rise to three great advantages over the self-recording type of meteorograph. First, a record is obtained during the ascent of the balloon and consequently the ultimate loss of the apparatus is of no importance; secondly, a large amount of aerological data can be obtained at a cost far less than that required for aeroplane observations; thirdly, information can be obtained at altitudes considerably greater than those given by aeroplane instruments. For these various reasons considerable attention has been given in certain European countries and in America to radio-sounding methods of exploring the atmosphere. The collection of reliable aerological data is now a matter of prime importance for a variety of purposes. Since a large number of ascents are necessary to obtain an adequate knowledge of conditions over a large area, and since many of the instruments will be lost or returned in a damaged condition, it is important to keep as low as possible the cost of the apparatus. In the present paper a description is given of a satisfactory radio transmitter equipped with meteorological instruments to give instantaneous indication of the pressure and temperature of the atmosphere.

To solve the problem of autonomously navigating multiple destinations, which is one of the tasks in the Tsukuba Challenge 2019, this paper proposes a method for automatically generating the optimal travel route based on costs associated with routes. In the proposed method, the route information is generated by playing back the acquired driving data to perform self-localization, and the self-localization log is stored. In addition, the image group of road surfaces is acquired from the driving data. The costs of routes are generated based on texture analysis of the road surface image group and analysis of the self-localization log. The cost-added route information is generated by combining the costs calculated by the two methods, and by assigning the combined costs to the route. The minimum-cost multidestination route is generated by conducting a route search using cost-added route information. Then, we evaluated the proposed method by comparing it with the method of generating the route using only the distance cost. The results confirmed that the proposed method generates travel routes that account for safety when the autonomous wheelchair is being driven.
