Purpose - This study intends to identify, analyze and formulate manufacturing strategies for small companies. The application of management methodologies on manufacturing processes in small companies is not commonly adopted, since an immediate return is not generated, and when it is compared to the effort required to understand and apply it. Design/methodology/approach – An adaption to a manufacturing audit methodology was used, illustrated by using the application to a small printing company. Findings - The situation that occurs frequently in small and family-owned enterprises, where even making activities more professional is not considered relevant, and seen as a waste of time and money, can certainly be improved using manufacturing audits. However, with technological advances, even small companies need to develop and reflect on manufacturing strategies to remain in the market. Originality/value - This approach becomes efficient when it focuses and analyzes these strategies, which are usually unclear for small companies, identifying weaknesses and opportunities for improvement to leverage the competitiveness of these companies, by defining more effective strategies. In addition, the study contributes theoretically when it seeks to adjust a methodology that has already been consolidated in large corporations, and which needs to be adapted to the reality of the scenario presented. Auch kleinere Unternehmen mit komplexen Herstellungsprozessen müssen heute in der Kleinserie die Effizienz und Geschwindigkeit in der Produktion erhöhen. Zentraler Bestandteil ist dabei eine schlanke Fertigungssteuerung in einem ganzheitlichen Produktionssystem. Der Fachbeitrag zeigt, wie auch bei hoher Komplexität wesentliche Ansätze der „Lean Production“ genutzt werden, um die Produktion von Ingenieurkeramiken durch die intelligente Vernetzung bereichsspezifischer Methoden zu optimieren.   Today, even small companies with complex manufacturing processes in low-volume production have to improve efficiency and speed in manufacturing. A core aspect is lean manufacturing control within an overall production system. This article shows how the main approaches of Lean Production can be applied even to a highly complex environment. The intelligent integration of specific methods for each control unit helps to enhance the production of ceramics.

Purpose This paper aims to review how millennials, since coming into the workforce in 2004, have faired in several countries worldwide. After a synopsis of how the group is characterized in each country surveyed, suggestions are provided to human resource (HR) directors on how to further manage and motivate this employee sector. Design/methodology/approach The paper opted for document review of research from past 15 years on this sector of the workforce to contrast and compare how these workers had progressed (or not) depending on the areas of the globe in which they reside. Findings The paper provides practical insights on possible ways and means to create productivity from these employees. It suggests that successful managers may have to be more creative in their ways to attract and appeal to this group but also be more deliberate in creating effective strategies tailored toward the digital native. Research limitations/implications Because the data in this group are still not voluminous and theories and conclusions on the impact they have made continue to vary depending on the circumstance, continued analysis to recognize new trends is suggested. Originality/value This paper suggests updated criteria for HR managers to better evaluate and motivate a growing sector of their workforces.

Communication channels provide us with technological advances; they can make our lives easier, but they can also bring us viruses. In this session, we aim to explore the impact of Covid-19 on relationships between states and other global actors. To what extent will the pandemic affect international relations? What role will emerging actors such as large corporations, pressure groups or multilateral organizations take on? What impact will the possible reconfiguration of global relations have on Europe, but also on the world? This article aims to analyze the consequences of Covid-19 in our societies.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the history and future of service operations, with the goal to identify key theoretical and technological advances, as well as fundamental themes that can help to imagine the future of service operations in 2050. Design/methodology/approach A review of the service operations literature was undertaken to inform a discussion regarding the role that technology will play in the future of service operations. Findings The future of service operations is framed in terms of three key themes – complexity, orchestration, and elasticity. The paper makes three contributions to the service science literature by: reviewing key themes underpinning extant service operations research to frame future trajectories of service operations research; elaborating a vision of service operations in 2050 based on history and technology; and outlining a research agenda for future service operations. Practical implications The case of service automation is used to provide an illustration of how the three themes converge to define future service operations, and in particular, to show how technology is recasting the role of the firm. Originality/value Service operations in the next 30 years will be very different from what it was in the past 30 years. This paper differs from other review papers by identifying three key themes that will characterize and instill new insights into the future of service operations research.

PurposeThe integration between the traditional lean management and Industry 4.0, namely called Lean 4.0, is under the spotlight of both academia and practitioners. While we agree on the benefits Lean 4.0 may bring to companies performance, we still lack a deep understanding of the characteristics of this paradigm, such as its effective application space. Recalling traditional lean better suits repetitive companies, we are keen to understand whether the anew Lean 4.0 will enlarge its application space.Design/methodology/approachWe performed an exploratory study, using a quantitative analysis based on Bayesian network approach to investigate whether Lean 4.0 results to be as effective in repetitive companies as in non-repetitive ones, in terms of operational performance.FindingsWhile our findings confirm that Lean 4.0 will enhance companies' performance regardless their production strategies, companies adopting a repetitive strategy do benefit from a much higher improvement. Our findings provide an insight on the true applicability space of Lean 4.0, which seems to be the same as the traditional lean.Originality/valueWe contribute to the ongoing debate of Lean 4.0 providing initial empirical evidence on how to improve the operational performance in non-repetitive companies, seeing that Lean 4.0 might not be the best choice in its current format.

Purpose The authors wanted to find out if women in-house lawyers were treated more equitably than their counterparts in law firms and, therefore, reached higher ranks more often. Design/methodology/approach The authors examined 10 years of data about public companies in the ExecuComp dataset. The information includes name, age, gender, job category and numerous compensation measures. Public companies must report their top five earners. The authors narrowed their focus to 2,154 lawyers of whom 1,851 were men and 303 were women. Findings Analysis supported hypothesis 1, showing women are underrepresented in senior legal roles in large corporations. Hypothesis 2, however, was not supported. It was expected that women would be more likely to hold senior positions in female-dominated industries, but this was not the case. Finally, hypothesis 3 was not supported either. It suggested in-house women counsel would earn comparable compensation to their male counterparts. But analysis showed women earned 92.6pc of men earn and their bonuses were only 73.2pc of men’s. Originality/value The authors say the research has important practical lessons for companies. Many of the remedies for gender disparities in law firms apply also to in-house counsel, they say. A primary mechanism is to integrate more women into senior leadership positions. This will tend to lead to reductions in compensation disparities, as well as greater accountability and transparency.

Furthermore some additional factors apply only to small companies. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify and analyse the particularities of marketing in small and medium-sized enterprises (SME), to try to understand how networking can influence the marketing activities implemented in this firm segment. Design/methodology/approach For this purpose, the author decided on a qualitative approach and performed exploratory case studies of four SMEs in Portugal. Findings The results obtained show that the owners/managers of the SMEs studied here recognize the importance of marketing and networking, but have not yet implemented them in a structured way. In these SMEs, marketing is informal and reactive to market opportunities. Practical implications This study contributes to showing the importance of marketing in SMEs, providing more information and evidence about marketing in this firm sector, as well as about the owner/manager’s influence on the use of networking in marketing activities. Originality/value In spite of the opportunities associated with networking in SMEs, there is only limited empirical evidence of its importance in marketing activities. This holds particularly for the realm of SMEs.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to find out whether French companies in the private sector were willing to make allowances to help religious minorities to integrate and express themselves. They also wanted to analyze if the accommodations caused resentment among other staff. Design/methodology/approach The authors carried out 28 semi-structured interviews with individuals in positions of authority at private sector companies. Findings They found three common strategies. The first was “flexibility within the rules,” meaning managers made allowances for religious practices. The second was the “separation strategy,” insisting on the strong adherence to rules and refusing to make allowances. The third common approach was a “common ground strategy” that found common points of interest between all workers. Originality/value Clashes between managers and religious workers are becoming more common in Europe as religiosity is on the rise. The results help managers to formulate effective strategies to deal with the issues.

Purpose – Biotechnology is closely associated to microfluidics. During the last decade, designs of microfluidic devices such as geometries and scales have been modified and improved according to the applications for better performance. Numerous sensor technologies existing in the industry has potential use for clinical applications. Fabrication techniques of microfluidics initially rooted from the electromechanical systems (EMS) technology. Design/methodology/approach – In this review, we emphasized on the most available manufacture approaches to fabricate microchannels, their applications and the properties which make them unique components in biological studies. Findings – Major fundamental and technological advances demonstrate the enhancing of capabilities and improving the reliability of biosensors based on microfluidic. Several researchers have been reported verity of methods to fabricate different devices based on EMS technology due to the electroconductivity properties and their small size of them. Therefore, controlled fabrication method of MEMS plays an important role to design and fabricate a highly selective detection of medical devices in a variety of biological fluids. Stable, tight and reliable monitoring devices for biological components still remains a massive challenge and several studies focused on MEMS to fabricate simple and easy monitoring devices. Originality/value – This paper is not submitted or under review in any other journal.
