Delousing treatment for salmon sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) is considered a significant welfare concern in farming of Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar), where both industry and legislative bodies prompt for better methods. Currently, the most common method is thermal delousing, where fish are crowded, pumped into a vessel and exposed to ∼28–34°C for ∼30 s. Physical collisions occurring as a result of a loss of behavioural control lead to acute stress. Crowding triggers vigorous escape behaviour as salmon respond not only to treatment but also to being channeled to and from the treatment zone. A sequence of events considered to cause mortality and poor welfare. The present case study was motivated by an urgent need for delousing in groups of small salmon post-smolts in experimental research. For this purpose, a simple, small-scale system for thermal delousing was constructed, including anaesthesia to alleviate behavioural responses. The anaesthetised fish showed little behavioural response to thermal treatment, strong appetite within hours, and negligible mortality. The described method is regarded as a welfare-friendly alternative to industrial delousing in smaller fish groups, for example, in experimental research. We would encourage detailed research aimed towards gaining a deeper under-standing of the welfare effects of anaesthesia prior to treatment for delousing.

Telemetry is increasingly being used to estimate population-level survival rates. However, these estimates may be affected by the detectability of telemetry tags and are reliant on the assumption that telemetry data represent the movements of the tagged fish. Predation on tagged fish has the potential to bias survival estimates, and unlike the issue of detectability, methods to correct for the resulting bias (termed “predation bias”) are not yet developed. In an acoustic telemetry study on inner Bay of Fundy Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts during 2008 and 2011, unusual tag detection patterns were indicative that some data may have been representative of the movements of predators rather than smolts. To incorporate predation effects into the resulting survival estimates, a suite of 11 summary migration metrics were compared between Atlantic salmon smolts and striped bass (Morone saxatilis). Cluster analyses revealed that 2.4% to 13.6% of tags implanted in smolts exhibited migration patterns more similar to striped bass than to other smolts, which was interpreted here as evidence of predation. Reassigning the fate of these tags as “depredated–died” reduced estimated survival from 43.5% to 41.1% in 2008 and from 32.6% to 19.0% in 2011 relative to a traditional mark–recapture model, illustrating the effect of predation bias in this case study.

This paper discusses the early outcomes of a trial of well head compression on coal seam gas (CSG) wells to lower surface pressure at the well head. This is a case study of four Johnson Controls Frick rotary screw compressor packages that were installed on CSG wells in an Origin Energy field in the Bowen basin and the early effects of lower well pressures on increased gas production due to the installation of compression. In mid-2016 Johnson Controls installed four compressor packages on Origin Energy wells with different characteristics (age, flow pressure), with a view of determining uplift of gas flow over the remaining life of the well, as well as operational issues with having well head compression. The expected versus actual uplift is compared for the different wells, with a view of providing some guidance on future potential wells that will benefit from this type of compression. Operational issues, such as effects on water flow, effect of oil and overall design considerations for well head compression, are also discussed.
