The aim of this study is the detailed description of the esophageal microscopic structure in guinea pigs. Fragments from the cervical, thoracic and abdominal segments of the esophagus were processed for classical paraffin embedding and the sections were stained by hematoxylin-eosin and Goldner’s trichrome methods. The esophagus in guinea pigs is lined by keratinized stratified squamous epithelium and there are no glands in the lamina propria and the submucosa. The muscularis mucosae is formed by smooth muscle cells disposed longitudinally. The muscularis externa is formed by striated muscle cells disposed on 3 layers in the first 2 thirds of the esophagus, while in some regions of the abdominal segment’s circumference, the cells form 4 layers.

The Southern Caracara is a bird of prey, of the family Falconidae, inhabits all the Brazilian territory, they are omnivorous birds adapted for hunting. The digestive system of the predators presents differences in their morphology due to their eating habits. Knowing the importance of the gastrointestinal system, this study aims to carry out a histological study of the tongue, esophagus and the crop of Polyborus plancus. For this purpose, eight avian of both sexes, with different body weights and ages were used, they were euthanized and the organs were collected, fixed, dehydrated and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. It was noted that the tongue has stratified squamous epithelium with mucous glands and with different degrees of keratinization. The esophagus and crop have four well developed muscle layers and mucous glands. Additionally, in the crop there is presence of an adventitious layer that consists of loose connective tissue. We conclude that the tongue, the esophagus and the crop of the Southern Caracara have similar histological organization of several birds like the Pekin Ducks, ostriches, domestic chicken and partridges.

AbstractThe study was conducted on 36 developing reticulum from healthy and normal embryos/ foeti of Indian goat. Embryos/foeti were assigned into three groups. Histo-differentiation of reticulum of goat stomach took place at 38 days of gestation. The wall of foetal reticulum was made up of three strata i. e. epithelium, pleuripotent blastemic tissue and serosa up to 49 days of fetal age and definite four layers viz. epithelium, propria-submucosa, tunica muscularis and serosa were observed first at 51 days of gestation. Upto 100 days of gestation the reticulum was lined by undifferentiated stratified epithelium and thereafter gradually transformed into stratified squamous epithelium. Keratinization was noticed at term. Primary and secondary reticular crests made their appearance at 60 and 112 days of gestation, respectively. Corial papillae were detected in primary and secondary reticular crests at 121 and 145 days of gestation, respectively. Near term, the core of the reticular crest also contained muscularis mucosae in its proximal 1/3rd region while core of the corial papillae contained only lamina propria. Reticular, collagen and elastic fibers came into sight at 46, 100 and 134 days of gestation, respectively.Summary statementThe study was conducted on intrauterine reticulum of Indian goat. From this study it can be concluded that the histogenesis of reticulum was almost completed in prenatal life. However, to become functional it still required more time as the relative sizes of reticulum and process of keratinization were yet to be completed.

The morphological and cytological characteristics of the stomach of the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena (L.)) are described from dissections and histological preparations. The stomach consists of the following three compartments: forestomach, with keratinized stratified squamous epithelium and well-developed muscularis externa; main stomach, with rugose mucosa containing mucous, parietal, and zymogenic cells; and pyloric stomach, with typical pyloric glands. The opening from the fore-stomach to the main stomach is located near the esophageal opening. A sphincter is not present, but the opening is surrounded by several epithelial folds. The main stomach is joined to the pyloric stomach by a narrow connecting channel possessing pyloric glands. The gross and microscopic characteristics of the compartments are interpreted in relation to function.

Pterygium internum (external eye layer) shows great recurrence tendency after surgical removal. Its etiology is still unclear and represents a significant problem. The main goal of our study was to explore the interrelationships of pathohistological characteristics of pterygium, namely presence of inflammation, vascularisation degree and fibrinoid changes and on the basis of their analysis to test the possibility of predicting its evolution and recurrence. The analysis was performed on the material taken from 55 patients surgically treated by the technique of Arlt. The specimens were stained using the classical histochemical methods: hematoxylin-eosin (HE), Masson’s trichrome, Gomori’s reticulin stain and PAS technique. Pterygium is mostly covered by conjunctival epithelium, while in the cap region shows morphology of modified stratified squamous epithelium of the cornea. Structural basis of the epithelium is composed of continuous basal lamina and continuous connective fibers underneath. This connective basis shows fibrinoid changes in the form of oval islets of different size, parallel to convexity of pterygium, or is in the form of unified focus. The number, caliber and the type of blood vessels showed excessive variability.Pathohistological analysis of morphological characteristics of pterygium is adequate basis for prediction of recurrences; as they present the biggest concern in treatment of this widely spread disease.

This study was carried out to identify the morphological, histological and histochemical features of the vagina of the adult guinea pig (Cavia porcellus). To perform such project, 14 adult guinea pigs at their diestrous period were bought from the local breeders directly. Animals were euthanized, dissected and subsequently specimens from the cranial, middle and caudal portions of the vagina were collected and fixed. Fixation was implemented by using 10% neutral buffered formalin and Bouin’s solution. Post routine processing such as dehydration, clearing, embedding and blocks preparation, tissue sections of 6 μm were prepared and stained by using hematoxylin-eosin, Masson’s Trichrome, Alcian blue and Periodic acid shiff stains. Gross findings revealed that the vagina in the adult guinea pigs was characteristically very long tube-like structure with wide diameter. The vagina entirely was running ventral to the colon and then under the rectum in the pelvic cavity. It was terminated caudally by the vaginal orifice independent to the urethral orifice of the urinary system. Microscopic findings revealed mucous columnar lining epithelium which was folded at the vaginal fornix decreased caudally toward the external vaginal orifice where the epithelium changed into stratified squamous epithelium not keratinized. Thin dense lamina propria was continuous with loose connective tissue of the submucosa. Thickness of tunica muscularis was decreased which was surrounded with thick adventitia. Histochemically, the non-ciliated mucous columnar cells present in the lining epithelium of the cranial and middle regions of the vagina were positively stained with AB (pH 2.5) and PAS stains. The reaction with AB (pH 2.5) was more intense compared to the staining with PAS so that it indicated that mucin was more acidic than neutral in nature. Characteristic conclusions include that the vagina opening was U-shaped not circular and closed by transparent closure during the diestrous period. Histologically, the vagina also lined with mucoid lining and only the orifice and adjacent area lined with stratified squamous epithelium. Moreover, current study recorded differences in both macroscopic and microscopic aspects of the vagina in the guinea pigs compared to other animal considered laboratory species.

Twenty adult partridges Rhynchotus rufescens were used to study the morphology of the beak and the tongue. Lengths of the beak and of the tongue were evaluated, and histologic sections of the tongue were stained routinely with hematoxylin-eosin (HE), periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and Masson’s trichrome stain, later analyzed and described. The beak of the partridge of both sexes are curved, flat, hard and with a sharp extremity, with mean length of 4.90cm for the females and 4,80 for the males. The tongue is characterized by a triangular format with mean length of 1cm for both sexes, and its extremity is presented as a sharp format. Organization of the tongue tissue presents a stratified squamous epithelium with filiform papillae in all surface, mucous glands with ducts that project to the epithelium surface and a hyaline cartilage in the whole length of the tongue, which lays on the skeletal musculature that is guided in several directions.

The stratified squamous epithelium which lines the ruminal compartment of the bovine stomach performs at least three important functions. (1) The upper keratinized layer forms a protective shield against the rough, fibrous, constantly moving ingesta. (2) It is an organ of absorption since a number of substances are absorbed directly through the epithelium. These include short chain fatty acids, potassium, sodium and chloride ions, water, and many others. (3) The cells of the deeper layers metabolize butyric acid and to a lesser extent propionic and acetic acids which are the fermentation products of rumen digestion. Because of the functional characteristics, this epithelium is important in the digestive process of ruminant species which convert large quantities of rough, fibrous feed into energy.Tissue used in this study was obtained by biopsy through a rumen fistula from clinically healthy, yearling holstein steers. The animals had been fed a typical diet of hay and grain and the ruminal papillae were fully developed. The tissue was immediately immersed in 1% osmium tetroxide buffered to a pH of 7.4 and fixed for 2 hrs. The tissue blocks were embedded in Vestapol-W, sectioned with a Porter-Blum microtome with glass knives and stained with lead hydroxide. The sections were studied with an RCA EMU 3F electron microscope.
