The aim of the present study was to develop regression models based on ultra-sonographic measurements of fetal eyes (orbital diameter (OD) and eyes volume (EV)) to determine mare gestational age (fetal age) in Arab-Barb breed and to compare the obtained formula with similar formulas used in practice. Twenty-two Arab-Barb mares were included in this study. For each mare, an average of 6 ultrasound examinations per month of gestation, from day 90 of pregnancy to foaling were performed. The parameters examined, OD and EV, were used to establish regression models to determine gestational age of mares. The results led to establish linear regressions of the two parameters, EV and OD. The derived gestational age (GA) prediction formulas were: GA = 0,0097EV + 93,887; GA = 8.687OD + 0.6598 (GA in day; EV in mm3; OD in mm). The coefficients of correlation (R) between EV (R=0.96), OD (R=0.93) and mare gestational age were highly significant (P<0.001) indicating that the two eye measurements can be used to determine accurately mare gestational age after 90 days of pregnancy in Arab-Barb breed. In addition, the formula established in the present work from the OD is more accurate in determining the GA in the Arab-Barb compared to that predefined for English Thoroughbred. This comparison reveals that the growth of fetal orbit of Arab-Barb breed is slower than that of the English Thoroughbred.

Abstract Objectives To investigate the association of calcium supplementation during the pregnancy with the birth weight of single-born neonates. Methods The survey employed a multistage, stratified and random sampling to investigate 15–49 aged pregnant women in 2010 to 2013 in Shaanxi province. A self - designed questionnaire was utilized. Birth weight between the 10(th) and 90(th) percentile was classified as appropriate for gestational age(AGA) infants. Chi-square test and logistic regression models were conducted to evaluate the association of calcium supplementation with single-born neonatal birth weight. Results A total of 28,490 women was enrolled in this study, 17 349 (60.9%) of participants had calcium supplementation during pregnancy. The incidence rates of small and large gestational age infants were 13.5% and 8.3%, respectively. The study conducted that calcium supplementation had a statistically significant difference in SGA (birth weight percentile &lt;10) (P &lt; 0.01). After adjusting the regression models by confounding factors, we found that calcium supplementation was still protective towards SGA birth, the difference was statistically significant (OR = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.82–0.96, P &lt; 0.05), but there was no significant difference in the birth to LGA (birth weight percentile &lt;10). Conclusions Calcium supplementation during pregnancy reduced the risk of SGA, but was not associated with the birth of LGA. Funding Sources

Objective To compare neonatal and infant mortality rates stratified by gestational age (GA) between singletons and twins and examine the three leading causes of death among them. Study Design This was a retrospective cohort study using the U.S. vital statistics datasets. The study was restricted to nonanomalous live births at 24 to 40 weeks delivered in 2005 to 2014. We used multivariable Poisson regression models with robust error variance to examine the association between birth plurality (singleton vs. twin) and mortality outcomes within each GA, while adjusting for confounders. The results were presented as adjusted risk ratios (aRRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results Of 26,292,747 live births, 96.6% were singletons and 3.4% were twins. At 29 to 36 weeks of GA, compared with singletons, twins had a lower risk of neonatal mortality (aRR: 0.37–0.78) and infant mortality (aRR: 0.54–0.86). When examined by GA, the three leading causes of neonatal and infant mortality varied between singletons and twins. Conclusion When stratified by GA, the risk of neonatal and infant mortality was lower at 29 to 36 weeks in twins than in singletons, though the cause of death varied.

Breast milk (BM) is beneficial due to its content in a wide range of different antioxidants, particularly relevant for preterm infants, who are at higher risk of oxidative stress. We hypothesize that BM antioxidants are adapted to gestational age and are negatively influenced by maternal age. Fifty breastfeeding women from two hospitals (Madrid, Spain) provided BM samples at days 7, 14 and 28 of lactation to assess total antioxidant capacity (ABTS), thiol groups, reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activities, lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde, MDA + 4-Hydroxy-Trans-2-Nonenal, HNE), protein oxidation (carbonyl groups) (spectrophotometry) and melatonin (ELISA). Mixed random-effects linear regression models were used to study the influence of maternal and gestational ages on BM antioxidants, adjusted by days of lactation. Regression models evidenced a negative association between maternal age and BM melatonin levels (β = −7.4 ± 2.5; p-value = 0.005); and a negative association between gestational age and BM total antioxidant capacity (β = −0.008 ± 0.003; p-value = 0.006), SOD activity (β = −0.002 ± 0.001; p-value = 0.043) and protein oxidation (β = −0.22 ± 0.07; p-value = 0.001). In conclusion, BM antioxidants are adapted to gestational age providing higher levels to infants with lower degree of maturation; maternal ageing has a negative influence on melatonin, a key antioxidant hormone.

Abstract. For many geotechnical purposes, the proper estimation of shapes and dimensions of landslide rupture zones is of significant importance. Very often this exact delineation is difficult due to the lack of information on rupture zone extents in 3D. Based on a global landslide inventory, this study presents a refined statistical analysis correlating dimension-related and shape-related parameters characterizing a rupture zone in 3D to its volume. Dimension-parameters are approximated by linear regressions increasing with greater volumes, whereas shape-related parameters appear stable throughout the entire range of volumes. Revealing themselves as very stable, these correlations can be used, hence, to extrapolate from a distinct parameter to the volume of a landslide rupture zone. In a second stage, ratios of dimension-related parameters are correlated with rupture zone volumes. Also, this type of correlation delivers very stable results showing that ratios are constant throughout the entire range of volumes. Making use of this ratio consistency, it is possible to deduce one of the two parameters when the other one is given. This latter aspect seems to be promising for remote sensing surveys when initial rupture areas or rupture volumes should be delineated.

Abstract Phthalates are non-persistent chemicals with endocrine-disrupting abilities widely used in a variety of consumer products. Evidence for the effects of phthalate exposure on liver function in adolescents is lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between urine phthalate levels and changes in liver function indicators. Methods: Data were analyzed from the combined 2007-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Weighted linear regressions were used to explore the association between urinary phthalate metabolites and indicators of liver function. Bayesian kernel machine regressions (BKMR) were used to evaluate the joint effects of phthalate metabolite mixtures on indicators of liver function. Results: Weighted Linear regression models showed that MCOP and MiBP were negatively associated with TBIL (all P FDR < 0.05), MCPP was positively correlated with TBIL (P FDR < 0.05), ΣDEHP, MCOP, and MEP (all P FDR < 0.05) were negatively correlated with ALB, while MCPP was positively correlated with ALB (P FDR < 0.05), and MCOP was negatively correlated with TP (P FDR < 0.05). BKMR analysis showed phthalate metabolite mixtures had significant positive dose response relationships with ALT, AST, GGT, ALP and TBIL, and significant negative dose response relationships with ALB and TP. Conclusions: Phathalate metabolites were associated with changes in liver function indicators among U.S. adolescents.

Background and objectivesAKI is associated with poor short- and long-term outcomes. Questions remain about the frequency and timing of AKI, and whether AKI is a cause of death in extremely low gestational age neonates.Design, setting, participants, & measurementsThe Recombinant Erythropoietin for Protection of Infant Kidney Disease Study examines the kidney outcomes of extremely low gestational age neonates enrolled in the Preterm Epo Neuroprotection study, a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of recombinant human erythropoietin. We included 900 of 941 patients enrolled in Preterm Epo Neuroprotection. Baseline characteristics were compared by primary exposure (severe AKI versus none/stage 1 AKI) using unadjusted logistic regression models. Cox regression models estimated the relationship between severe AKI and death after adjustment for potential confounders. Time-dependent AKI was modeled as a binary outcome and a categorical variable by stage of AKI. We fit Cox models using time-dependent AKI status lagged by <7 days before death. Landmark analyses examined the relationship of death with development of severe AKI.ResultsSevere AKI occurred in 168 of 900 (19%, 95% confidence interval, 17% to 20%) neonates, and stage 3 AKI occurred in 60 (7%, 95% confidence interval, 5% to 8%). Stage 3 AKI occurring 7 days before death (hazard ratio, 3.88; 95% confidence interval, 1.26 to 11.96), intraventricular hemorrhage (hazard ratio, 2.01; 95% confidence interval, 1.01 to 3.99) and sepsis (hazard ratio, 2.85; 95% confidence interval, 1.12 to 7.22) were all independently associated with death. Severe AKI occurring 7 days before death (hazard ratio, 2.21; 95% confidence interval, 0.92 to 5.26) was associated with death but not statistically significant. In a landmark analysis, after adjusting for potential confounders, late (after day 14 and before day 28) severe AKI was strongly associated with higher hazard of death (hazard ratio, 4.57; 95% confidence interval, 1.82 to 11.5).ConclusionsSevere AKI occurs frequently in extremely low gestational age neonates. Stage 3 AKI is associated with mortality, and this association is present 7 days before death.

From previous research, which gave standard curves for the evolution of uterine height and umbilical perimeter according to gestational age in the case of single pregnancies, the authors propose curves which show the variations of these two parameters in twin pregnancies.The observed differences are sufficient to allow a diagnosis of twin pregnancy as soon as the 18th week of amenorrhea.This observation is interesting because, until now, a systematic early B-scan examination has not been performed as a rule.
