ABSTRACT Purpose: This research seeks to identify how entrepreneurs’ personality traits can influence the capital structure of micro and small private businesses in Brazil, which are important for the economic growth and the subsistence of their owners. Originality/value: The study of the behavioral dimension of business decisions can help financial agents to better understand client behavior, including the adoption of mechanisms that identify possible risky or inefficient decisions made by managers based on their personality traits. It can also assist the government and institutions supporting micro and small private businesses in developing strategies to reduce the mortality of such companies. Design/methodology/approach: The proposed model involves 19 expected relationships that evaluate the relationships between the optimism, risk tolerance, sense of control (external and internal), attitude towards debt, and entrepreneur gender constructs. The sample includes 625 micro and small entrepreneurs in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were performed. Findings: Results showed that attitude towards debt and gender were the most significant constructs and had a direct influence on the capital structure, while optimism and internal locus of control exerted a negative indirect influence, while risk tolerance had a positive indirect effect. Female managers demonstrated higher optimism and internal locus of control than male managers, but they had a worse attitude towards debt.

Objectives: Following the prevalence of COVID-19 and quarantine, the requirement to observe safety and hygiene during this period has left various effects on the psychological and social aspects of society. Because people with different personality traits have shown different behaviors for safety attentions during the quarantine, the present study aimed to examine and test a model of personality and cognitive antecedents of health considerations COVID-19. Methods: For this purpose, a sample of 220 people working in education and universities, were evaluated online and through social networks. Participants completed the safety considerations questionnaire (safety behavior and safety attitude), internal locus of control, NEO questionnaire. The proposed model was evaluated through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) AMOS-23 and SPSS V. 23. The bootstrap procedure by Preacher and Hayes (2008) was used for testing indirect relationships. Results: The results showed that the designed model had good fit indicators. Apart from the relationship between agreeableness and internal locus of control (negative relationship), other relationships between variables were reported to be positive and direct. The position of internal locus of control also played the role of a complete mediator. Conclusion: The conscientiousness trait activates the internal locus of control construct, and consequently, the person tends to observe health behaviors. In other words, the whole conscientiousness effect leads to the observance of hygienic principles through the intervention and occupation of the cognitive structure of the locus of control (full mediator). The simple relationship between neuroticism and the locus of control, which was reported to be negative (-0.20), changed to (0.23) due to interaction with the conscientious variable. Explaining this change in signs and values indicates that a linear interpretation of the data cannot be provided. Therefore, it can be said that creating some concern in people about health messages and critical and searching following Coronavirus information along with conscientiousness, can provide profitable conditions for the tendency towards health behaviors.

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between personality traits (conscientiousness and internal locus of control) and self-leadership. Specifically, we tested a moderated mediation model with self-leadership as the mediator between personality traits and job performance and job satisfaction and with gender as the moderator in influencing the mediations. Data were collected from a variety of organizations from 341 supervisor-subordinate dyads located in China and Hong Kong. Our analyses revealed that: (1) conscientiousness and internal locus of control were positively related to self-leadership in Chinese contexts; (2) self-leadership mediated the relationships of conscientiousness and internal locus of control with both job performance and job satisfaction; and (3) the mediating effects of self-leadership were not moderated by gender.

Background: Burnout is a major problem for nursing. There is a strong relationship between work stress and emotional exhaustion. Although studies report a negative correlation between the internal locus of control and emotional exhaustion and work stress, the number of studies available on the subject is limited. Purpose: This study intends to examine the extent to which the relationship between work stress and emotional exhaustion is mediated by nurses’ internal locus of control. Methods: The study adopted a cross-sectional survey design. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling techniques. The study sample consisted of 347 nurses who worked in a university hospital in Izmir, Turkey and who agreed to participate in the study. The Work-Related Strain Inventory was used to evaluate the nurses’ work stress level, Maslach Burnout Inventory was used to evaluate their emotional exhaustion levels, and the Locus of Control Scale was used to evaluate the internal locus of control. The variables of the study were based on the Neuman Systems Model. Results: Work stress was positively related to internal locus of control (β = .21, p < .001), which was, in turn, negatively associated with emotional exhaustion (β = −.03, p > 0.1). Internal locus of control was negatively related to emotional exhaustion (β = −.14, p < .001). Work stress is directly (β = .87, p < .001) and indirectly related to emotional exhaustion (mediated by internal locus of control β = .84, p < .001). Work stress is directly (β = .87, p < .001) and indirectly related to emotional exhaustion (mediated by internal locus of control, β = .84, p < .001). Conclusion: Although the relationship between emotional exhaustion and work stress was mediated, the impact of internal locus of control was limited. It is recommended that different variables be included in future studies so that they can mediate the relationship between work stress and emotional exhaustion.

Investment is one of the most crucial decisions that a company must create to achieve higher financial performance and to maintain long-term sustainability. This study predicts that two significant factors determine corporate investment, i.e., the firms’ corporate governance and capital structure. The article also assumes that companies that are aware and engage in environmental programs would find it much easier to gain investors’. This study used 39 units of analysis of 13 manufacturers listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange that received a good ranking in PROPER during the 2016-2018 period and analyzed with structural equation modeling (SEM). This study finds that corporate governance is negatively related to the capital structure but positively related to corporate investment. However, the capital structure does not affect corporate investment implying environmental performance’s significance in leading corporate governance and enhancing corporate investment. Further research can extend the observation period, use other sectors as the sample, use the different indicators in each variable, and develop the relationship between variables on a broader framework.

PurposeThe study aims to examine the relationships among personality traits (i.e. the Big Five personality traits and locus of control), self-perceived facial attractiveness, motivations (i.e. intrinsic and extrinsic motivation) and intention toward live stream broadcasting. It also investigates the moderating role of perceived behavioral control in the relationship between motivations and intention.Design/methodology/approachData collected from a sample of 637 participants are used to examine the research model and test the hypotheses with the employment of partial least squares structural equation modeling.FindingsThe study shows that motivations and perceived behavioral control are significant predictors of intention. Perceived behavioral control has a significant moderating effect between motivations and intention. Intrinsic motivation is positively influenced by self-perceived facial attractiveness, agreeableness, extraversion and internal locus of control, while extrinsic motivation is positively predicted by self-perceived facial attractiveness, conscientiousness and extraversion.Originality/valueThis study enhances our understanding of the determinants of intention toward live stream broadcasting by exploring its relationships with motivations, self-perceived facial attractiveness and personality, as well as the moderating effects of perceived behavioral control.

This article explores the notion that different types of entrepreneurs exist, distinguishable not only by the types of business activities undertaken, but also by certain personality traits they possess. Selected personality traits of franchised entrepreneurs are compared to those of independent entrepreneurs using empirical data from 127 franchised owner-managers from ten restaurant franchises. The study findings suggest that, while high need for achievement motivates entrepreneurial endeavours of various types, the distinctive conditions of franchising mean that franchisees neither possess, nor require, such high degrees of internal locus of control and ambiguity tolerance as do independent entrepreneurs.

Abstract: This study aims to examine the factors that have the potential to influence student’s entrepreneurial intentions using the TPB theory model along with several other factors (i.e., attitude towards entrepreneurship, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, innovation, proactive personality, need for achievement, internal locus of control, risk taking propensity, lifestyle integration, social networking, resources, opportunity recognition, fungibility issues, entrepreneurial intention, and pre-start-up behavior). Data were collected through 222 entrepreneurship concentration students from well-known universities in Indonesia. The structural equation model (PLS-SEM) was applied to test the research hypotheses. The emergence of significant and positive results among all factors involved, except fungibility issues is evidence of the positive influence of the factors studied on student’s entrepreneurial intentions in Indonesia which are then briefly summarized in the form of conclusions. Keywords: Entrepreneurial intention, theory of planned behavior, pre-start-up behavior, entrepreneurship Prediksi Entrepreneurial Intention dan Pre-Start-Up Behaviour terhadap Mahasiswa Konsentrasi KewirausahaanAbstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji faktor-faktor yang berpotensi mempengaruhi niat berwirausaha mahasiswa dengan menggunakan model teori TPB beserta beberapa faktor lainnya (yaitu sikap berwirausaha, norma subjektif, persepsi pengendalian perilaku, inovasi, kepribadian proaktif, kebutuhan berprestasi, internal. locus of control, kecenderungan mengambil risiko, integrasi gaya hidup, jejaring sosial, sumber daya, pengenalan peluang, masalah kesepadanan, niat kewirausahaan, dan perilaku pra-start-up). The revised Philosophies of Human Nature scale was presented to 94 females and 94 males to develop normative data. There were no significant sex differences in the norms. A questionnaire about sports was presented at the same time to determine relationships between the two scales. Females who claimed frequent sports participation were less likely to have an internal locus of control and were less likely to believe that human beings are complex than females who claimed infrequent participation. A comparison of those who like and dislike sports gave no significant differences for either sex on the sub-scales of Philosophies of Human Nature. The findings are consistent with previous research which generally shows little or no effect of interest or participation in sports on personality traits.
