Aim: To assess the influence of different fiberglass post surface treatments on the bond strength (BS) to root dentin. Methods: Thirty bovine root canals were endodontically treated and filled with gutta-percha and AH Plus sealer. At 24 h after the endodontic filling, the post spaces were prepared with Gates-Glidden drills and #3 drills of the DC White Post system, maintaining a 4 mm apical seal. The roots were randomly divided into three groups: S (fiberglass posts treated with silane), SA (fiberglass posts treated with silane and a hydrophobic adhesive system) and SHA (fiberglass posts treated with silane, followed by drying with hot air). The posts were cemented with a selfadhesive cement (RelyX U200). The specimens were stored in distilled water at 37 °C for 24 h and subjected to the push-out test (0.5 mm/min). Data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05) Results: SA and SHA groups showed the highest BS mean values (11.29 and 10.85 MPa, respectively), while the S group presented the lowest BS mean value (7.21 MPa). S group was significantly different from SA and SAH groups. Conclusions: The surface treatment of fiberglass posts influenced BS values.

Objectives: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate gaps or voids occurring in roots filled with three different sealers.Methods: Thirty extracted human single-rooted teeth were decoronated, instrumented using NiTi rotary instruments, divided into three groups (n=10 per group) and obturated with one of the following: Epiphany with Resilon, MetaSEAL with gutta-percha or AH Plus with gutta-percha using the match-taper single-cone technique. After storage for one week in 100% humidity at 37°C, the teeth were horizontally sectioned (n=10). Photographs were taken from the coronal, median and apical parts of the roots using a stereomicroscope at 10X magnification, and the images were then transferred to a computer. The mathematical method known as the ‘Affine Transformation’ was used for the transformation of pixel coordinates to ground coordinates in the Netcad Software program. The mean areas (μm2) of the gaps between the sealer and root dentin or gutta percha/resilon and the gaps between the sealer and/or voids inside the sealer mass were measured, scored on a 0-3 scale and statistically analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis test.Results: The mean total area of gaps or voids for each sealer was 4631.80 μm2 for the Epiphany- Resilon, 3826.80 μm2 for the MetaSEAL-gutta-percha and 31334 μm2 for the AH Plus-gutta-percha. The MetaSEAL-gutta-percha group showed more gap or void-free interfaces. No significant differences were found among the sealers in the scores for the gap areas (P<.05), and the MetaSEAL showed similar interfaces with Epiphany.Conclusions: No significant differences in the mean areas of gaps or voids were found among the tested resin-based sealers. Aim: This study evaluated the effect of a sonic device on the bonding of fiberglass posts cemented with a self-etching adhesive combined with conventional cement or a self-adhesive cement to root dentin. Methods: Forty single-rooted bovine incisors were endodontically prepared using a step-back technique. Gutta-percha and AH Plus sealer were used for root canal filling, combined with a thermoplasticization technique. After 1 week, the post space was prepared and the roots were divided into four groups according to the following factors: adhesive system/resin cement (Ambar/ AllCem Core [FGM] and RelyX U200 [3M]) and application mode (manual or sonic). The posts were cemented and the roots were cut into discs and submitted to push-out bond strength (POBS) test. The failure mode was evaluated using a stereoscope at 25x magnification. The data were analyzed statistically using ANOVA and Tukey’s post-hoc test (α = 0.05). Results: The sonically activated RelyX U200 group was superior to the other groups. RelyX U200 manually applicated showed similar results to those of sonically activated Âmbar/AllCem. These three groups outperformed the Âmbar/AllCem manually applicated group. Adhesive failure between dentin and resin cement was the most predominant pattern. Conclusion: Sonic application of self-etching adhesive and self-adhesive cement improved the POBS of fiber posts to the root canal.

This study evaluated comparatively the adhesion of Epiphany and AH Plus endodontic sealers to human root dentin treated with 1% NaOCl and 1% NaOCl+17% EDTA, using the push-out test. Sixty root cylinders obtained from maxillary canines had the canals prepared and were randomly assigned to 3 groups (n=20), according to root dentin treatment: GI - distilled water (control), GII - 1% NaOCl and GIII - 1% NaOCl+17% EDTA. Each group was divided into 2 subgroups (n=10) filled with either Epiphany or AH Plus. Bond strength push-out test data (kN) were obtained and analyzed statistically by ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test. There was statistically significant difference between sealers (AH Plus: 0.78 ± 0.13; Epiphany: 0.61 ± 0.19; p<0.01) and among root dentin treatments (distilled water: 0.58 ± 0.19; 1% NaOCl: 0.71 ± 0.12; 1% NaOCl+17% EDTA: 0.80 ± 0.17; p<0.05). In conclusion, AH Plus sealer presented greater adhesion to dentin than Epiphany, regardless of the treatment of root canal walls.

Aim: To evaluate the effect of the caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) as a root canal irrigation agent on the push-out bond strength of the AH-Plus sealer. Materials and Methods: A total of 75 single-rooted teeth were decoronated and were randomly divided into 5 groups of 15 roots for irrigation protocols: Group NaOCl: 5.25 percent NaOCl; Group CAPE: 0.5 percent CAPE; Group NaOCl + ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA): 5.25 percent NaOCl-17 percent EDTA; Group NaOCl + CAPE: 5.25 percent NaOCl-0.5 percent CAPE; and Group CAPE + EDTA: 0.5 percent CAPE-17 percent EDTA (for 3 min each group). All root canals were then obturated and 1-mm-thick horizontal slices were obtained from different root thirds of the root canal (coronal, middle, and apical, respectively). The groups were challenged with push-out tests. Modes of failure were determined under a stereomicroscope. Results: The CAPE-EDTA-treated group presented the highest mean bond strength in the coronal region of root dentin ( P < .05). The CAPE-treated group had a higher mean bond strength than the NaOCl-treated group ( P < .05). The mixed mode of failure was most predominant in all groups. Conclusion: Under the presented in vitro conditions, CAPE alone or in combination with EDTA or NaOCl demonstrated a positive effect that increased the push-out bond strength of the AH-Plus sealer to root dentin.

ABSTRACT The bond strength of ActiV GP and gutta-percha/AH plus after using 2% CHX as final rinse was evaluated in this study. According to the final irrigation regimen forty roots were divided into two groups (n = 20) randomly Group 1—5 ml of 17% EDTA; Group 2—5 ml of 17% EDTA followed by 5 ml of 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX). Based on the obturation system the two groups were further subdivided into two subgroups (n = 10). The roots were horizontally sectioned from the coronal and midthird sections for measuring the push-out bond strength. CHX/AH Plus (2.795 ± 0.42 MPa) and EDTA/ActiV GP (1.489 ± 0.117 MPa) recorded the highest and lowest mean bond strength values respectively. It was concluded that when 2% CHX was used as a final irrigation rinse the bond strength of both guttapercha/AH Plus and ActiV GP obturation system improved significantly.
