ABSTRACT Purpose: to analyze the effects of clinical listening in the discourse of parents of children with autism about the speech-language-hearing work in the team of a Children and Youth Psychosocial Attention Center (Centro de Atenção Psicossocial Infanto-Juvenil). Methods: a descriptive case study research with nine parents of children with autism. Results: the parents recognize, in the therapeutic experience with the speech-language-hearing therapist, changes in the quality of communication and relationship with their children, becoming more linguistically open and interesting figures to their children, because they understand the communication dynamics and feel ready to develop it. The parents incorporated the idea that it is through a shared playing that their children develop both subjectively and cognitively. They realize that the change and interaction with and between their children, as proposed by the speech-language-hearing therapy, generate care and enlarge the social repertoire of communication. Conclusion: speech-language-hearing therapy was considered as belonging and fundamental to the field of mental health in the work with children with autism, which reinforces the listening offered to the parents by the team.

Play is an ideal tool for enhancing the development of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). It is important to know their possibilities and to develop play activities that permit the special educational needs of these children to be addressed in an adequate way. Therefore, a case study is presented with two children and a two-year follow-up period during which the authors observe which aspects the development has evolved and if it is possible to increase the sense of the activity in these children using play as an educational response. The results are accompanied by an in-depth interview with the teachers of the students over the two-year period. An improvement in areas of development is evidenced in the social, communicative, symbolic, and anticipation and flexibilization dimensions during the two years immersed in a play methodology, supported by the structuring of routines and task spaces. Also, an evolution of the sense of the activity and the development of functional play is observed.

Siblings of children with disabilities have been a focus of research in recent years. Sibling relationships, family quality of life, and incorporation of siblings into intervention have all been areas of investigation. The current paper describes the participation of siblings in intervention with children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Sibling-mediated intervention, modeled after peer-mediated intervention, has been shown to increase the social communication skills of children with ASD, and families have reported satisfaction and increased quality of life following such intervention. Clinical implications and ideas for supporting siblings and families of children with ASD are discussed.

Background: This study evaluates the effectiveness of parent-assisted children’s friendship training intervention for enhancing friendship quality and social skills among children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). We conducted a quasi-experimental study to investigate the effective outcomes of social skills and friendship quality in the pre-and post-parent-assisted CFT intervention phases; Methods: to conduct a 12-week field session, 30 children with their parents were selected. The Social Skills Improvement System Rating Scales and the Quality of Play Questionnaire-Parent were used to assess the effectiveness of the parent-assisted children’s friendship training during pre-and post-intervention. A semi-structured interview with parents was conducted at the end of the session; Results: findings revealed that intervention improved the social skills of these children. Additionally, the friendship quality of children with ASD improved before and after the intervention, however, engagement remained unchanged. Parents also showed some sort of improvement after the session as they reported a heightened sense of fear and resistance, awareness, learning and adjustment, change is not easy, and identifying support; Conclusions: there was clear evidence that children with ASD benefitted from parent-assisted CFTs in terms of social skills and friendship quality. However, larger and controlled studies are required to draw firm conclusions about this kind of intervention.

Research suggests an overrepresentation of autism spectrum diagnoses (ASD) or autistic traits in gender diverse samples, particularly in children and adolescents. Using data from the GENTLE (GENder identiTy Longitudinal Experience) Cohort at the Gender Diversity Service at the Perth Children’s Hospital, the primary objective of the current retrospective chart review was to explore psychopathology and quality of life in gender diverse children with co-occurring ASD relative to gender diverse children and adolescents without ASD. The Social Responsiveness Scale (Second Edition) generates a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) score indicating a likely clinical ASD diagnosis, which was used to partition participants into two groups (indicated ASD, n = 19) (no ASD indicated, n = 60). Indicated ASD was far higher than would be expected compared to general population estimates. Indicated ASD on the Social Responsiveness Scale 2 (SRS 2) was also a significant predictor of Internalising behaviours (Anxious/Depressed, Withdrawn/Depressed, Somatic Complaints, Thought Problems subscales) on the Youth Self Report. Indicated ASD was also a significant predictor of scores on all subscales of the Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory. The current findings indicate that gender diverse children and adolescents with indicated ASD comprise an especially vulnerable group that are at marked risk of mental health difficulties, particularly internalising disorders, and poor quality of life outcomes. Services working with gender diverse young people should screen for ASD, and also provide pathways to appropriate care for the commonly associated mental health difficulties.

ABSTRACTThis research aimed to analyze the tools used by nurses for the development of mental health care in the Family HealthStrategy and the limitations to their production. This is a qualitative case-study research. The data were collected throughsemi-structured interviews and analyzed from the Thematic Content Analysis, based on the Social Representations Theory. Two categories emerged: tools used for the production of mental health care and the limitations to its effectiveness. Theresearch participants anchored their social representations in elements that portrayed the possibilities / limitations formental health care, mainly related to the user with mental disorder. Thus, the research participants acknowledged referral/ medicalization, welcoming / bonding / listening as possibilities for the production of mental health care, and pointed outdeficiencies in the formative processes and fear as limiters for the production of this care. Keywords: Mental Health Services; Family Health Program; Qualitative research; Nursing

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the application of the Autism ASPECTSS™ Design Index in the Post-Occupancy Evaluation of existing learning environments for children along the autism spectrum. First published in 2014 this index outlines 7 design criteria that have been hypothesized to support environments conducive of learning for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Using the index as a framework, this paper outlines a case study of a Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) of an existing pre-K-8th grade public charter purpose-built school for children on the autism spectrum. The tools used for the evaluation were: the ASPECTSS scoring of the school through a survey of teachers and administrators; on-site behavioral in-class observation; and focus groups of parents, teachers, staff and administrators. The results informed a design retro-fit proposal that strived to assess any ASPECTSS compliance issues and implement the index across the learning spaces, therapy spaces, support services and outdoor learning environments of the school. This paper will outline the application of the index and the resultant design from this process. The results will strive to present a scalable and replicable methodology and prototype for improving existing built environments for learners with ASD.

The paper presents a qualitative empirical research project, research design and research methods used in the preparation of a dissertation which deals with music therapy interventions in children with autism. The reason for examining this issue is a considerable lack of research activity in this area, and thus also a lack of relevant results on which clinical practice could rely. The results of future investigations should bring answers to the question of how children with autism receive and experience music therapy intervention and also what the effect of music therapy intervention in the social interaction of children is; research will be directed to a deeper understanding of this influence and its characteristics using the multiple case study design.
