ABSTRACT The sciaenid genus Bairdiella comprises a group of relatively small fishes found in inshore waters and estuaries of the western Atlantic and eastern Pacific. Despite recent analyses of the phylogenetic relationships of Bairdiella, there has been no comprehensive revision of the alpha taxonomy of the species of the genus. Bairdiella ronchus from the western Atlantic, has a complex taxonomic history, with four junior synonyms recognized. Based on morphological and molecular evidence, this study indicates that B. ronchus represents a species complex. The species is therefore redescribed and its geographic range is redefined. Bairdiella veraecrucis, which is currently recognized as a junior synonym of B. ronchus, is revalidated, and a new species of the genus is described from the Atlantic coast of Brazil. Finally, inferences are made on the diversity and biogeography of the B. ronchus species complex.

AbstractThe ghost shrimp Callichirus major (Say, 1818) is widely distributed in the Atlantic Ocean from ∼23°N to ∼26°S, and has also been reported from the tropical eastern Pacific. Evidence has been accumulating over many years that C. major is actually a species complex. Yet, the name C. major is widely and frequently used in many kinds of research. The current lack of clarity in the use of the name C. major has resulted in nomenclatural instability, but also in unreliability and miscommunication of the available ecological and distributional information. Existing morphological and molecular evidence is reviewed and new evidence presented for the specimens from the southern localities previously assigned to C. major s. l. actually being a new species. That new species is herein described based on morphological and molecular evidence. Additionally, a neotype is selected for C. major in order to settle the defining characters of C. major s. str. and, therefore, ensuring the correct use of this name.

The genus Minuartia is represented in Turkey by 34 taxa. Some interesting specimens were collected from Antalya province, and examined. These specimens resemble Minuartia meyeri, and M. multinervis from which differ by characters (macro-, and micromorphological) of inflorescence, alar pedicels, petals, sepals, capsules and seeds. Moreover, by using the DNA sequences of the ITS genes, phylogenetic relationships between this collected species, and the related species were investigated. As a result of the evaluation of molecular, and morphological data, we proposed to described the population from Antalya as a new species for the science. A description, pictures, distribution, habitat, and IUCN category are given.

Russula subrutilans sp. nov., a new species of Russula is described from southern China. It is unique for having buff pink to light congo-pink pileus, distant ventricose to subventricose lamellae with rare lamellulae, globose to broadly ellipsoid spores with bluntly conical warts forming a partial reticulum, and narrowly clavate to clavate cheilocystidia and pleurocysitidia with variable tips. Phylogenetic relationships among the new species and other closely related species in the genus are inferred based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region.

A new species of the genusOnchidorisis described from the south-western Atlantic, on the coast of Brazil, in the States of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. To date, the genusOnchidorisis known almost exclusively from the northern hemisphere, especially the Atlantic coast of Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. The single previous record from the southern hemisphere isOnchidoris maugeansis, described from Australia. This is the first record of the family Onchidorididae from the coast of Brazil.Onchidoris brasiliensissp. nov. is very similar toOnchidoris depressa, from England and the northern coast of Spain, but is distinguished by the presence of a triangular protuberance on the edge of the inner lateral radular tooth and a wide closed branchial circle with tubercles inside. Furthermore, the egg mass of O.brasiliensissp. nov. contains a single row of eggs, whereas that ofO. depressahas multiple rows.Onchidoris brasiliensissp. nov. has lecithotrophic development, the first record of this type of development in the genus. There is a relationship betweenO. brasiliensissp. nov. and the bryozoanParasmittina protecta.

Hetaerina americana Fabricius, 1798 has a long and irresolute taxonomic history. Several synonyms have been suggested (H. californica Hagen in Selys-Longchamps, 1859, H. basalis Hagen in Selys-Longchamps, 1859, H. texana Walsh, 1863, H. scelerata Walsh, 1863, etc.), related to the variation in the size of the wing spots as well as to the morphology of the male cerci. However, Calvert (1901) suggested that H. americana represents one variable species. Nevertheless, Vega-Sánchez et al. (2019) through a genetic and morphological analysis presented evidence to propose that H. americana represents a species complex. In the present work, we describe a new species that belongs to this complex: H. calverti sp. nov. The morphological characteristics by which males and females of H. calverti differ from H. americana are highlighted. The most important character for the differentiation of males is the shape of the cerci and the size of the individuals (when the two species are in sympatry). In females, the main differences are in the shape of the intersternites and the medio-dorsal carina of the last segment of the abdomen. Some generalities about the biology of the species are presented, including geographical distribution patterns and genetic divergence data. The Asian Temple Pitviper Tropidolaemus wagleri is a widespread polytypic species complex with a complicated taxonomic history, a lengthy species synonymy list, and a geographic distribution encompassing Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, portions of Indonesia, and the Philippines. As a prelude to a comprehensive review of this species complex, we describe a new species of Temple Pitviper based on five historic museum specimens from the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. The new species can be distinguished from sympatric members of the Tropidolaemus subannulatus complex and other congeners on the basis of its conspicuous color pattern and scalation characters. Available collecting data suggest that the new species has a wide distribution in rainforests and lower montane wet forests of Sulawesi Utara and Sulawesi Tengah provinces.

The phylogenetic relationships among the genera of the tribe Bacchini sensu lato (i.e., Syrphinae with simple, unsegmented aedeagus) were inferred using molecular evidence. The mitochondrial protein-coding gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and the nuclear ribosomal 28S and 18S rRNA genes for 54 bacchine taxa were analyzed using Bayesian inference and Maximum Likelihood. Among the analyzed taxa there is a new species of Melanostoma (Schiner) from Cameroon, Melanostoma janeceki Mengual, sp. nov., which is described in full. This new species has a complete metasternum without excavation, a characteristic that is not present in other species of Melanostoma, usually with an excavated metasternum, but it is the diagnostic character of the genus Afrostoma Skevington, Thompson & Vockeroth. Based on the phylogenetic placement of Melanostoma janeceki Mengual, sp. nov. the taxonomic status of Afrostoma as a genus is discussed and a new generic classification of Bacchini stat. rev. and Melanostomini stat. rev. is presented in the light of the inferred phylogeny. Results did not recover Bacchini sensu lato monophyletic, but into two groups as follows: Melanostoma and related genera, and Baccha, Platycheirus and related genera. Pseudoplatychirus van Doesburg is considered junior synonym of Platycheirus Le Peletier & Audinet-Serville, and Afrostoma Skevington, Thompson & Vockeroth as junior synonym of Melanostoma. Pyrophaena Schiner and Eocheilosia Hull comb. nov. are ranked as valid genera, and consequently, the genus Platycheirus is divided into four subgenera: Platycheirus (Carposcalis) (Enderlein), Platycheirus (Pachysphyria) (Enderlein), Platycheirus (Platycheirus), and Platycheirus (Tuberculanostoma) (Fluke) comb. nov.

A new polypore, Postia duplicata, collected in Yunnan and Zhejiang provinces, is described and illustrated on the basis of morphological and molecular characters. Postia duplicata is characterized by pileate basidiomata with pale brownish to brown pore surface when bruised, duplex context, a monomitic hyphal system with clamped generative hyphae, presence of gloeocystidia in the hymenium, and cylindrical basidiospores (3.8–5.8 × 1.8–2.5 µm). Both morphological and molecular evidence confirmed the placement of the new species in Postia and showed its phylogenetic relationships.

The eustatic movements triggered by glaciations during the Quaternary have shaped the landscape of Brazilian Atlantic Coast. Cyclic sea-level changes either isolated or connected freshwater fish populations, impacting their distribution and diversification. Rhamdia quelen has been widely recorded from the Brazilian Atlantic Coastal rivers, but it is also considered a species complex. A phylogeographic study carried out using three molecular markers of mtDNA and one of nDNA in the populations of Rhamdia from the hydrographic basins of Southern Atlantic Coast of Brazil recovered three evolutionarily distinct groups: one represented by the populations found in lowlands of all studied watersheds; the second group composed of populations found in the upper tributaries of the rio Araranguá, rio Mampituba and rio Tramandaí; and a third group found exclusively in the upper portions of rio Tubarão. The genetic divergences among these three lineages of Rhamdia is discussed according to sea level changes in the Quaternary. Two new species of Rhamdia are diagnosed and described based on morphological and molecular evidence.
