ABSTRACT Lutjanus argentiventris presents a large intertropical distribution within the Eastern Pacific, which is as important to fisheries now as it was in the pre-Hispanic period. The purpose of this article is to present an allometric model that enables the size and weight of L. argentiventris to be predicted, using the isolated bones found in archaeological and paleontological contexts or the stomach contents of ichthyophagous species. A modern collection of L. argentiventris from Ecuador was used, composed of 37 individuals covering a wide range of sizes and weights. The total length (TL), standard length (SL), and total fresh weight (W) of each individual was gathered. The TL of the sample ranged between 210 and 760 mm, the SL between 164 and 627 mm and the W ranged between 123 and 6550 g. The most frequent bones (15) and otoliths were chosen and 39 measurements were taken. The total length-weight relationship was W = 6E-06 TL3.1513 with R 2 = 0.997. In general, it was observed that the relationships between the TL and the bone measurements had a strong correlation (R² > 0.95). The allometric model will be useful not only for archaeologists but also for biologists working on historical ecology.

Buddleia sp., butterfly bush, is a large, arching shrub with spike-shaped inflorescences in a wide range of colors including pink, purple, yellow, and white. Our objective was to determine which cultivars of Buddleia had an acceptable postharvest life and potentially could be used as cut flowers. Stems of `Black Knight', `Charming Summer', `Empire Blue', `Lochinch', `Nanho Blue', `Nanho Purple', `Pink Delight', `Royal Red', `White Profusion', and `Sungold' were harvested when one-third to two-thirds of the florets had opened. Within 2 hours of harvest, flower stems were recut under water, placed in vases containing 10 g Floralife/liter, and placed in a simulated consumer environment. Daily fresh weight, open and total length of inflorescence, and inflorescence color were measured. `Charming Summer', `Pink Delight', `Royal Red', `Sungold', `Lochinch', `White Profusion', and `Nanho Blue' performed best.

Recently, the development of agricultural technology has been focused on achieving higher reliability and quality of work. The aim of the presented paper was to examine the possibilities of evaluating the quality of work of wide-area irrigation machinery by monitoring the coefficients of uniformity and non-uniformity of irrigation. The object of the research was pivot irrigation machinery equipped with sprinklers with a total length from 230 to 540 m. The commonly applied quality of work parameter for wide-range irrigators is the irrigation uniformity coefficient according to Heermann and Hein CUH. Work quality evaluations were also carried out through other parameters applicable in practice, such as irrigation uniformity coefficients calculated according to Christiansen CU, Wilcox and Swailes Cws, and our introduced parameters, the coefficient ar (derived from the degree of unevenness according to Oehler) and the degree of uniformity γr (derived from the degree of non-uniformity according to Voight). Other applied parameters for determining the quality of work of wide-range irrigation machinery were the coefficients of irrigation uniformity according to Hart and Reynolds CUhr, further according to Criddle CUcr and subsequently according to Beale and Howell CUbr. Next, the parameters of the non-uniformity coefficient according to Oehler a, the coefficient of variation according to Stefanelli Cv, the degree of non-uniformity according to Voigt γ and the degree of non-uniformity according to Hofmeister Ef were evaluated. Field tests were performed during the growing season of cultivated crops (potatoes, corn and sugar beet) in the village of Trakovice (agricultural enterprise SLOV-MART, southwest of the Slovakia) and in the district of Piešťany (Agrobiop, joint stock company). During the research, the inlet operating parameters (speed stage, inlet pressure, irrigation dose), technical parameters (number of sprayers, total length, number of chassis) and weather conditions (wind speed and temperature) were recorded. The obtained results were examined by one-way ANOVA analysis depending on the observed coefficient or input conditions and subsequently verified by Tukey and Duncan tests as needed. Irrigation uniformity values ranged from 67.58% (Cws) to 95.88% (CUbh) depending on the input conditions. Irrigation non-uniformity values ranged from 8.58 (a, Ef) to 32.42% (Cv). The results indicate a statistically significant effect of the site of interest and thus the impact of particular field conditions (p < 0.05). When evaluating the application of different coefficients of irrigation uniformity, the results showed a statistically significant effect only in the first test (p = 0.03, p < 0.05). During further repeated measurements, the quality of work increased due to the performed inspection of all sprayers and the reduction in the influence of the wind.

Speleomantes are the only plethodontid salamanders present in Europe. Multiple studies have been performed to investigate the trophic niche of the eight Speleomantes species, but none of these studies included hybrid populations. For the first time, we studied the trophic niche of five Speleomantes hybrid populations. Each population was surveyed twice in 2020, and stomach flushing was performed on each captured salamander; stomach flushing is a harmless technique that allows stomach contents to be inspected. We also assessed the potential divergence in size and body condition between natural and introduced hybrids, and their parental species. Previously collected data on Speleomantes were included to increase the robustness of these analyses. In only 33 out of 134 sampled hybrid Speleomantes we recognized 81 items belonging to 11 prey categories. The frequency of empty stomachs was higher in females and individuals from natural hybrid populations, whereas the largest number of prey was consumed by males. We compared the total length and body condition of 685 adult salamanders belonging to three types of hybrids and three parental (sub)species. Three group of salamanders (one hybrid and two parental species) showed significantly larger size, whereas no difference in body condition was observed. This study provided novel ecological information on Speleomantes hybrid populations. We also provided insights into the potential divergence between hybrids and parental species in terms of size and body condition. We discuss our findings, and formulate several hypotheses that should be tested in the future.

The morphometric observations were made on total length, standard length, pre-caudal length, head length, eye diameter and depth of body at pectoral fin base of estuarine catfish M. gulio. Males and females showed homogeneity in characters. A linear relationship was found between total length and morphometric characters. Regression of length and weight did not deviate significantly from cube law indicating isometric growth. The fish exhibited sexual dimorphism. In the search of efficient biofertilizer, nine efficient strains of PGPR were evaluated by inoculation in two different rice varieties, Saryu-52 and Malviya Dhan-36 in the gnotobiotic conditions using two different media FCN-medium and soil extract medium. Agrobacterium sp. strain BN-2A showed better result in respect to other eight isolates in the total length, fresh weight, number of roots and chlorophyll-a content. By the inoculation Agrobacterium sp. strain BN-2A, total length increased in Saryu-52 (22.6%) and in Malviya Dhan-36 (52.1%), fresh weight increased in Saryu-52 (42.4%) and in Malviya Dhan-36 (68.8%) and chlorophyll-a increased in Saryu-52 (76.6%) and in Malviya Dhan-36 (37.1%). Similarly in soil extract medium, inoculation of Agrobacterium sp. strain BN-2A alone showed better result in comparison to mixture of nine strains. To prove that colonization indeed occurs, gusA reporter gene was tagged with the most efficient isolate Agrobacterium sp. strain BN-2A and colonization in the rice root was confirmed by gusA staining and histochemical analysis of gusA staining. AbstractSeafood mislabeling occurs in a wide range of seafood products worldwide, resulting in public distrust, economic fraud, and health risks for consumers. We quantified the extent of shrimp mislabeling in coastal and inland North Carolina. We used standard DNA barcoding procedures to determine the species identity of 106 shrimp sold by 60 vendors across North Carolina as “local” shrimp. Thirty-four percent of the purchased shrimp was mislabeled, and surprisingly the percentage did not differ significantly between coastal and inland counties. Roughly one third of product incorrectly marketed as “local” was in fact whiteleg shrimp: an imported, and very likely farmed, species from the eastern Pacific (and not found in North Carolina waters). In addition to the negative ecosystem consequences of shrimp farming (e.g., the loss of mangroves forests and the coastal buffering they provide) and seafood importation, North Carolina fishers—as with local fishers elsewhere—are negatively impacted when vendors label farmed, frozen, and imported shrimp as local, fresh, and wild-caught.

Stomach contents of 104 C. fuscus (of 275-415 mm standard length) from rocky reef habitats in the Sydney region were analysed. This species was found to be entirely carnivorous, polychaetes, brachyurans, amphipods, gastropods and bivalves comprising the major food types and dominating the diet throughout the year. However, the relative proportions of these food types in the diet were found to vary considerably on a seasonal basis.

Two recent observational surveys of the Ca II resonance lines (Zarro and Rodgers 1983; Linsky et al. 1979) illustrate the great diversity of line profile shapes found in the spectra of cool stars. This diversity reflects a corresponding wide range in the underlying chromospheric properties of the stars. There are, however, three well-marked systematic trends in the shapes of Ca II line profiles which presumably reflect systematic trends in chromospheric properties. One of these, the Wilson-Bappu effect (Wilson and Bappu 1957), describes the strong correlation betweeen the width of the emission core (see Figure 1) and the absolute visual magnitude of the star. Despite much work, it is still not clear whether this is due primarily to systematic changes of velocity fields (e.g. Hoyle and Wilson 1958) or optical depths (e.g. Jefferies and Thomas 1959) in stellar chromospheres.

Seed of johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense(L.) Pers.] were planted during 1976 and 1977 at monthly intervals from March through October to study the growth and reproductive habits of this weed at Shafter, California. Plants were grown for 12 weeks and harvested at 3-week intervals. Emergence and development of plants increased with temperature. April through August plantings yielded 10-to 20-fold as much total fresh weight as March and September plantings. After planting, rhizome production normally began in 3 to 6 weeks and seed production in 6 to 9 weeks. From the April through August plantings, rhizomes accounted for averages of 13, 25, and 40% of the total fresh weight of plants 6, 9, and 12 weeks after planting, respectively. This compared, respectively, with 16, 9, and 6% for roots and 70, 66, and 54% for shoots. Seedlings emerging in March produced rhizomes in early June and viable seed in late June. Seedlings emerging as late as September produced rhizomes and some viable seed before killing frosts in November.

Present paper attempts to describe length-weight (LW) and total length-standard length (TL and SL) relationships of fresh-water garfi sh Xenentodon cancila. Fish of different length and weight were caught using cast nets from Muriyadhar, Sunsari. The fish were kept in ice box in fresh condition and brought to fi sh laboratory, Department of Zoolog post Graduate Campus, Biratnagar. The data obtained from measurement were analysed using the formula W = aLb. The b values estimated for the total length and standard length in relation to body weight were 3.2202 and 3.2559 respectively. The values of b clearly indicate the allometric growth pattern and for total length and standard length relationship, the linear value of b was 0.3223.J. Nat. Hist. Mus. Vol. 26, 2012: 10-14
