Abstract With 119 species distributed in 19 genera, most species of the subtribe Lychnophorinae are endemic to the Espinhaço Range in central eastern Brazil. This region is characterized especially by the campos rupestres, a grassland mosaic associated with vegetation on rock outcrops, which display a high level of endemism. The present work aims to identify distribution patterns, collection density, species richness and research bias in collections. Ten geographic distribution patterns were identified: Chapada Diamantina, Chapada dos Veadeiros and adjacent mountains, Pico da Aliança, Extension of the Espinhaço Range, Central-South Arc of Minas Gerais, Espinhaço Range and Brasília Arc, Campos Rupestres and Restinga, Chapada Diamantina and Caatinga, Northwest-Southeast Diagonal and East Triangle. Other Angiosperm families present similar distribution, mainly in the Espinhaço Meridional, where higher collecting efforts are present. Species richness is higher in sites with higher collection intensity, however, the northeast of Goiás shows the opposite pattern. Spearman correlation analysis shows a strong correlation between collection density and species richness, with an exponential asymptotic model that is quite significant for the total variation of species richness. The cluster analysis presented five clusters correlated with five distribution patterns in Lychnophorinae.

Montane open-habitats of southeastern Brazil are represented by the campos rupestres (principally in the Espinhaço Range) and by the campos de altitude (in the Serra do Mar and Serra da Mantiqueira). In spite of the occurrence of endemic species in both vegetation types, an analysis and synthesis of their bird communities have never been conducted. In this paper, we present an avifaunal survey of these areas, describe patterns of geographic distribution, and comment on the conservation of those open-habitats and their avifauna. A total of 231 bird species was recorded in the open-habitats of southeastern Brazilian mountaintops. In the campos rupestres, 205 species were recorded, while in the campos de altitude, the total was 123 species. Five patterns of distribution are recognizable among birds occurring in these habitats: non-endemic (191 species), Atlantic Forest endemics (26 species), Cerrado endemics (6 species), Caatinga endemic (1 species), and montane open-habitat endemics (7 species). In spite of the presence of several protected areas in those regions, the existing reserves do not guarantee the conservation of their important vegetation types and their avifaunas under current low levels of implementation. Since several endemic and threatened bird species live in the campos rupestres and campos de altitude, more efforts must be directed for their conservation.

Paepalanthus mollis var. mollis is placed in Paepalanthus subg. Xeractis (Eriocaulaceae) and, until now, it was considered endemic to the campos rupestres of the Espinhaço Range in Minas Gerais, Brazil. We report here the new occurrences of this species from the municipalities of Carrancas and Minduri, at the southern part of the mountain complex of Bocaina and Carrancas. These specimens confirm the occurrence of this species and the subgenus outside the Espinhaço Range. These occurrences are also the southernmost sites of geographic distribution of the group.

AbstractThe Cipo Cinclodes Cinclodes espinhacensis is a recently described furnariid endemic to the campos rupestres of Serra do Cipó, southern Espinhaço Range, southeastern Brazil. It is an “Endangered” species and its natural history is poorly known. We studied the Cipo Cinclodes breeding biology at Serra do Breu, where we found six nests on rock outcrops in 2009 and 2012. At least one nest was reused in different years. Breeding season was from September (nest building) to January (dependent juveniles). Nests were shallow cups or beds placed in chambers at the end of earthen and/or rocky tunnels or crevices on rock outcrops. Clutch size was 2–3 eggs. It exhibited biparental care during all nest stages. We demonstrated that the nesting habits of Cipo Cinclodes agree with those reported for other species of the genus, although some details differ from what is known for the closely related species, the Long-tailed Cinclodes Cinclodes pabsti.

This study identified patterns of geographic distribution of 102 Leguminosae taxa within the Park, based on literature data and herbarium specimens. Among the taxa, 38 grow exclusively in CamposRupestres (rocky fields) and 49 in the Semideciduous Forest. Eleven patterns of geographic distribution were identified, of which the West-East-Central South America pattern was the most representative, with 27 taxa. Of the 102 sampled taxa of Leguminosae, five are endemic to the Espinhaço Range and ten are included in lists of endangered species of the flora of Brazil and Minas Gerais. Information on these taxa is crucial to provide conservation practices for conserving the vegetation formations of the PEIT.

Abstract The variation in the species richness of herbaceous plants along an altitudinal gradient was analyzed in the Serra do Ouro Branco and Serra do Ribeiro, in the townships of Ouro Branco and Ouro Preto, respectively. Plant similarity between both serras was also assessed. Twenty spots were sampled along a 440 m (1105 m to 1545 m) altitudinal range; at each site, herbs were collected within ten 1 m2 plots, totaling 200 m2. We found 101 species distributed in 59 genera and 25 families. The richest plant families in Serra do Ouro Branco were Poaceae (22 spp.), Asteraceae (14 spp.) and Cyperaceae (10 spp.), while in Serra do Ribeiro, they were Poaceae (17 spp.), Cyperaceae (12 spp.) and Asteraceae (8 spp.). Variation between the number of species and altitude was not significant. The higher number of species in Serra do Ouro Branco may be due to different local environmental factors and to the occurrence of grazing and fires. The serras presented a high similarity value (J = 0.44), but cluster and ordination analysis indicated the formation of two distinct groups, reflecting the importance of local factors to determine the floristic composition of neighboring areas of campos rupestres.

ResumoCampos rupestres constituem uma vegetação típica de montanhas da Cadeia do Espinhaço e com elevado grau de endemismo de plantas, contendo algumas áreas com histórico de perturbações por garimpo e pisoteio. O presente estudo foca em duas perguntas principais: 1) Campos rupestres que foram perturbados pelo garimpo há cerca de 15 anos atrás possuem composição florística e estrutura similares a áreas sem perturbação? 2) A riqueza e abundância de espécies exóticas invasoras e de espécies nativas de ampla distribuição tendem a ser mais elevadas nessas áreas garimpadas ou pisoteadas? Quatro campos rupestres foram amostrados em Igatu, Andaraí, Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brasil: dois onde a atividade de garimpo cessou há 15 anos, um sob perturbação atual por pisoteio, mas sem histórico de garimpo e outro em uma área conservada (vegetação amostrada por 16 parcelas de 10x10 m, quatro em cada área). A distribuição geográfica das espécies foram determinadas com base na literatura e análises de classificação e ordenação foram feitas. A composição florística dos campos rupestres foi afetada pelas perturbações, mas apenas a perturbação por garimpo teve efeito marcante sobre a estrutura da vegetação. Espécies de ampla distribuição mais generalistas e a espécie invasora Melinis minutiflora P.Beauv. foram restritas às áreas perturbadas, mostrando a necessidade de monitoramento de espécies invasoras nas áreas garimpadas do Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina.

Begonia piranga (Begoniaceae) is a new narrowly endemic species from the campos rupestres of Serra do Padre Ângelo, a quartzitic massif in Conselheiro Pena, eastern Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Description, diagnosis, taxonomic comments, detailed illustrations, field photographs, and a provisional IUCN Red List Assessment are provided. The new species is considered Critically Endangered due to its restricted occurrence in high elevation rock outcrops, small population size, and decline in the quality of the habitat. Begonia vasconcelosiana, another Critically Endangered species, is also newly reported here for Serra do Padre Ângelo. These discoveries add to the increasing list of novelties from Serra do Padre Ângelo, reinforcing the urge for conservation actions to protect the endemic flora of this Serra and other areas of campos rupestres in eastern Minas Gerais state.
