Abstract In this study, we collected saliva and urine samples from individuals in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the years of 2017 through 2019 and we were able to detect the presence of Chikungunya virus genome in these samples. Our findings reinforce the possibility to monitor Chikungunya virus circulation by analyzing saliva and urine from individuals during inter-epidemic periods.

PurposeResearch question is about the perception of stricto sensu undergraduate and graduate accounting students, from the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) of the accountants' responsibilities and competencies required to them in assisting IT/IS strategy definition and implementation.Design/methodology/approachThis is a descriptive research, using a qualitative paper-and-pencil approach. Designed based on United Nations Accounting Model Curriculum, a questionnaire was self-applied to 361 accounting students of eight higher education institutions (HEIs) in Rio de Janeiro, whose responses are quantitatively analysed.FindingsAccounting students strongly agree on the need to acquire strategic skills that enable them to assist organizations in IT/IS issues but are quite divided about the related accountants' responsibilities, underestimating their future role in this respect.Research limitations/implicationsAlthough quantitatively adequate, the sample is non-probabilistic and, thus, results cannot be generalized. The authors expect that this paper can encourage HEIs to engage the path of multidisciplinary education and rethink their silo-based pedagogical models which have to prepare students for their forthcoming professional challenges, by introducing interdisciplinary courses, soft skills disciplines and work-integrated learning activities.Practical implicationsFindings can be useful for teachers and coordinators of the IT/IS area in accounting courses, stimulating brainstorming on the accountant's role in assisting organizations in IT/IS strategies and practices implementation. The study has relevant implications for educators through the identification and analysis of difficulties faced by students.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the research base of accountants' strategic role since the responsibility awareness identified gap can be elaborated for stimulating the discussion about the centrality of the accountant in IT processes within organizations.

This paper presents a reflection that is the result of a survey which intended to monitor the works of the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC) in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro (RMRJ). After two years of research and from this empirical object, we intend to think the management of Brazilian cities over the past decade in the context of the Lula Government, in particular, whose performance is considered in a discussion about the possibility of a New-Developmentalism, since this government is marked by a strong presence of the state in the construction of economic infrastructure and efforts to combat social inequalities.

Background Bone sporotrichosis is rare. The metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro is hyperendemic for zoonotic sporotrichosis and the bone presentations are increasing. Methods We studied a retrospective cohort of 41 cases of bone sporotrichosis, diagnosed from 1999–2016. The inclusion criteria was fungal culture isolation from any clinical specimen associated to bone involvement (radiography and/or computed tomography) compatible with fungal osteomyelitis or histopathological findings of bone material compatible with sporotrichosis. Molecular identification was performed when possible. Results Male patients represented 58.5% of the cases, with a cohort median age of 43 years. Immunosuppressive conditions were present in 68.3% of the patients, mostly HIV coinfection (51.2%). Multifocal bone involvement (more than one anatomical segment) was diagnosed in 61% of the patients, while 39% presented unifocal involvement. The bones of the hands were the most affected (58.5%), followed by the feet (41.5%) and tibia (26.8%). Multifocal group was characterized by a higher proportion of males (p = 0.0045) with immunosuppressive conditions (p = 0.0014). Amphotericin B followed by oral itraconazole was the main treatment, with a median time of 16.7 months (1.5 to 99.2 months), and cure of 53.7% of the patients (84.6% of immunocompetent and 39.3% of immunocompromised patients). Sequelae occurred in 12.2% of the patients—amputations (7.3%) and ankylosis (4.9%), while 22% died in the course of the disease. Sporothrix brasiliensis was the causative agent in all the 9 (22%) performed cases. Conclusions Bone sporotrichosis is a chronic, challenging condition with prolonged treatment, often with poor results and sequelae.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to understand the perception of managers of public maternity hospitals in the Metropolitan Region II of the state of Rio de Janeiro regarding obstetric violence and the measures to face it aiming at guaranteeing the quality of care. Method: a descriptive, exploratory study with a qualitative approach, conducted with 16 health managers from five maternity hospitals in Metropolitan Region II in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Data were collected through interviews, applied from May 2017 to May 2018, and submitted to content analysis in the thematic modality. Results: the research pointed out thenon-reception, technocratic principles of childbirth, refusal of the companion, disrespect to humanized practices centered on physiology and the choice of women, the need for health training as a guide for the humanization policy and the management of health units, professional unpreparedness for performance and lack of involvement of professionals with longer service time to modify practices in obstetric care. Thus, the need to break away from obstetric violence at the structural/institutional level was evident in order to guarantee quality care for women. Conclusion: it is the responsibility of the managers to provide training to health professionals regarding performance that respects the scientific evidence, the centrality and the axes of policies and recommendations in the area of sexual and reproductive health, especially to women regarding their autonomy.
