Abstract This article presents contributions from pragmatic sociology to the debate on the commitment of economic actors to socio-environmental causes. Given the controversy about the achievements of their engagement, we propose the notion of committed capitalism and seek to understand it through the moral ground of its critiques, defenses and the construction of its normativity. We aim to emphasize two dimensions observed in contemporary capitalism: the declared commitment to a cause and the efforts of actors to stabilize a compromise among distinct orders of worth (market, industrial, and civic) and create devices that actualize it in the world. Drawing on a textual corpus of Brazilian newspapers, we examine the interplay of critiques of corporate social responsibility, corporate sustainability, and social finance, as well as their responses. As a result, we present a framework of internal and external critiques of the compromise that allow us to understand the contours of the moral dimension that underpins some crucial aspects of contemporary capitalism.

The article proves that the implementation of the principles and use of the tools of corporate social responsibility can increase the reputation of the corporation and its activity in the world market. The purpose of the article is to substantiate and determine the role of corporate social responsibility of the mining and metals companies in ensuring and improving their reputation in the world market. The article substantiates that the low level of corporate governance practice and insufficient part of social contribution to the companies negatively affect formation of corporate social responsibility of the corporations. The article analyzes the indicators of Corporate sustainability and Transparency for 2018-2019 according to the professional rating of the largest Ukrainian mining and metals companies, based on leading international practices. The analysis of indicators made it possible to identify the proportional dependence of the reputation of the corporation on the measures of corporate social responsibility that the latter implements. It is determined on the basis of the study that corporate social responsibility is an effective tool to increase the competitiveness of mining and metals companies.

The popular image of activism in the university involves students and academics campaigning for social justice and resisting the neo-liberalisation of the university. Yet activism has been subtly corporatised through the migration of corporate social responsibility from the private sector into the university, a trend that may be illustrated by reference to the growing influence of research ‘grand challenges’ (GCs). Attracting both government and philanthro-capitalist funding, GCs adopt a socio-political stance based on justice globalism and represent a responsibilisation of academic research interests. Compliance with the rhetoric of GCs and the virtues of inter-disciplinarity have become an article of faith for academics compelled to meet the expectations of research-intensive universities in chasing the prestige and resources associated with large grant capture. The responsibilisation of the efforts of researchers, via GCs, erodes academic ownership of the research agenda and weakens the purpose of the university as an independent think tank: the essence of the Humboldtian ideal. The conceit of corporate activism is that in seeking to solve the world’s problems, the university will inevitably create new ones. Instead, as Flexner argued, it is only by preserving the independence and positive ‘irresponsibility’ of researchers that universities can best serve the world.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate investors’ perception of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and its risk-mitigating effects on firm-level innovation in Japan from 2006 to 2017. The authors examine the influence of CSR intensity on firm-specific risks, focusing on the risk-moderating effect of CSR on innovation. Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted a simple slope analysis and panel data regressions with input and output innovation measures and idiosyncratic risk based on an asset-pricing model. Findings The results demonstrate that CSR intensity not only reduces firm-specific risk directly but also indirectly by negatively moderating the relationship between firm-level innovation and idiosyncratic risk. Research limitations/implications Signaling trust to capital markets, CSR engagements in the manufacturing industry are clearly important for innovative firms with active research and development undertakings. Practical implications Corporate managers should further expand their efforts to make non-financial disclosures available, considering the interactions between CSR intensity and research and development financial risk. Originality/value In the context of Japanese firms, this study demonstrates the interaction between CSR practices and innovation activities from the perspective of long-term management of corporate sustainability.

Sustainable development is now an important direction for the further development of all economies in the world. It is important to balance economic development with the impact on the environment and our planet. Another direction in the development of management sciences is the emergence of the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility, which considers this impact in three key aspects—economic, environmental and social—in terms of microeconomics. This concept gives companies specific guidelines and tools that minimize their negative impact on the environment. Reducing the negative impact of companies influences the environment and this is what is mainly associated with them. However, companies should also pay attention to internal consistency and caring for employees. Company practices such as the exploitation of people, including children, and injustice in the workplace are some of the factors that can be observed in less developed countries. The article focuses on the presentation of the environmental aspect in the context of the concept of corporate social responsibility. We analyzed individual sectors of the economy in terms of the environmental aspect, with particular emphasis on the energy industry. The study is based on a statistical analysis taking into account data from 1718 companies from all over the world. The aim of the article is to present the environmental aspect in the context of corporate social responsibility in the energy industry as a direction for sustainable development of the economy. The article is based on the analysis of the literature and databases presenting CSR, which was created on the basis of questionnaire research. The article shows which regions of the world are worse and which are better in terms of the environmental aspects of CSR. Conclusions on the main CSR guidelines for the environment are also presented. We analyzed factors such as environmental routines, policies and targets, implementation of environmental management systems, ISO 14001/EMAS certification, environmental reporting, environmental requirements inside the supply chain, the trend of GHG emissions and the trend of energy consumption for their environmental impact. The analysis was carried out on the basis of given regions of the world and individual sectors of the economy, especially the energy industry.

The stability of corporate sector is definitely related to the prominent firms’ conditions, where both inner and outer factor played a significant role in enhancing the value proportion in sustaining the existence. Although many was conducted in the outer part in the corporate sector, however, less attention was apparently being given to the internal point where professional and moral basis is needed for further exploration in giving insights into corporate sustainability. This chapter attempts to examine the insightful value of professional competence and moral responsibility to give the significant point in disseminating the enhancement of corporate sustainability. The literature review was carefully conducted from the referred articles: journals, books and conference proceedings on the related topic. The finding reveals that the insightful value of professional competence and moral responsibility in advancing the corporate sustainability could be achieved in particular point through industry and university alliance. The basis of this alliance of both could give insights into incorporating the particular model of strategic partnership along with the corporate social responsibility. Engaged through the higher education (HE) together with firm involvement, this aim refers to advance in achieving the quality balance on corporate social responsibility. As such, this study is expected to contribute in advancing the research development agenda on enhancing strategic partnership assigned between professional competences together with moral responsibility.

<div><p><em>This paper studies one of the healthcare industry of India “Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited” which is ranked at 352 amongst the world’s largest 500 companies on corporate sustainability and environmental impact according to Newsweek in 2016. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries limited is the only company in the healthcare sector in India which has been listed as one of the Green companies in India. This paper mainly focuses on understanding and analysing the Green initiatives as a part of Corporate social responsibility (CSR) taken by the company which makes it the green company in India in Healthcare sector. </em></p></div><em>The green scores of the company has also increased by 4% compared to the previous year (2015), which shows that the company is always striving to incorporate strategic Green HRM. Strategic Green HRM is one of the growing innovative approaches which promotes the sustainable use of resources of the business organisation and thus integrates environmental management into HRM.</em>

Our paper focuses on the links between corporate sustainability and social responsibility. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) emerged as a tool for linking the priorities of business companies (making money and achieving profit) with the priorities of citizens and society. Bringing together the many different parts of a complex CSR programme into a single central system is crucial. Moreover, we discuss the role of corporate structures in the development of social organisations and their impact on society, as well as on corporate social responsibility and the impact of the social entrepreneurship model on the economy. It appears that companies can bring important benefits to society if they are responsible for the quality of the goods and services they produce and develop new goods or services that generate economic growth. The long-term benefits for investors therefore allow companies to invest in product innovation, thereby delivering highquality products that improve people’s standard of living. Business companies thus meet the needs of society and offer important benefits to society in the form of new jobs and economic opportunities for those in society who depend on the company’s good services. While companies seek new economic opportunities and regain public confidence, the creation of shared values and the pursuit of financial success is becoming increasingly important for companies in a way to support sustainable development and fighting global warming and climate change.
