Abstract The paper aims to discuss digital learning for lifelong learning at the university level in Brazil, taken as a case study. It is structured in the following way. It presents concepts of digital learning in multicultural approaches within lifelong paradigms. It then presents a cursory look at Brazilian educational policies in that area, particularly focusing on the role of the Universidade Aberta (Open University) in Brazil. Lastly, it discusses digital learning in the context of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemics in Brazil. It tries to gauge the impediments and the challenges that may jeopardise a multicultural potential in educational policies, particularly focusing on government political directives as well as responses from university associations and from a public university. It concludes, by presenting possible ways ahead for reflections and contributions in the area.

This chapter outlines the potential benefits of incorporating Web 2.0 technologies in a contemporary higher education context, and identifies possible ways of doing this, as well as expected challenges. It uses the University of Southern Queensland (USQ), primarily a distance education provider, as the context for many of its case study examples. In particular, it addresses the important role of the allowances of particular learning management systems (LMSs) in pedagogical applications of Web 2.0 technologies. Overall, this chapter argues that the goals and ideals of Web 2.0/Pedagogy 2.0 can be achieved, or at least stimulated, within an institutional LMS environment, as long as the LMS environment is in alignment with such goals and ideals. It uses the implementation of Moodle at USQ as a case study to reinforce this argument and explore which factors potentially influence a shift in thinking about learning and teaching in a Web 2.0 context.

Some academics are pushing for teaching staff to implement didactical practices to obtain sustainable behavior. Moreover, a fundamental element of gamification in all educational stages is the noteworthy effect it has on student motivation. In our study, we examined higher education students’ assessments in the University of Malaga on the design of educational gamification and the teaching criteria that relate to gamification, and its effect on student’s motivation, the applications of gamification, and the attitude towards sustainability. A questionnaire was administered to students studying for degrees in education from the University of Malaga. A total of 187 valid surveys were obtained. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was computed for these data based on an exploratory–confirmatory model and using SmartPLS version 3.3.2. A positive relationship between assessment of students’ motivation and sustainability attitude was found. We found that the opinions of the students about the role of their training and teaching design material in education would affect students’ motivation and the sustainability behavior, although the power of this last construct is moderate.

This article presents a proposed model for framing the policies of Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) libraries. The authors draw on a focused literature review across various disciplines as well as empirical evidence collected from a purposive sample of 40 participants in a case study. The qualitative evaluation method is used to evaluate a set of models. A self-developed set of criteria is used as a tool to test the models towards a selection of elements and features that are then used to table the proposed model for TUT’s libraries. The evaluated models were categorised to produce models for academic library activities, models for higher education as well as models that depict changes in society’s knowledge system. The adapted model proposes a multiple reality constructionist approach to improve a shared understanding of what constitutes knowledge in democratic South Africa. It was found that there are inconsistencies and a lack of clarity on the role of TUT’s libraries in transformation initiatives of the university. The main argument is that the future role of TUT’s libraries should include taking part in other processes of the knowledge system such as knowledge production, application and use. The main value of the article is to provide a comprehensive strategic outlook that guides the transformation of TUT’s libraries. This will assist to frame TUT’s libraries policies in light of changes taking place in higher education.

To survey the expansion of British higher education during the last twenty years is to conduct an inquest into an almost unmitigated disaster. The greatly enlarged university system and the new polytechnics have yielded few of the advantages originally claimed by the proponents of rapid growth. The main reason for this failure is that “expansion” has generally been seen as “more of the same.” Since the 1950s, and particularly since the authoritative Robbins Report of 1963, the new universities and polytechnics have too easily become replicas of the old. Higher education has remained geared to the traditional Oxbridge function — the provision of full time, non-vocational, residential, degree courses for 18 – 22 year olds. Significantly, one of the most notable success stories has been the Open University. Unlike conventional institutions, this has introduced a fresh concept of higher education. It offers part time courses catering mainly for adults. The courses are based on correspondence materials and television lectures. The Open University has shown how it is possible to extend the role of the university.

The impact of ministerial grants and EU fundson the library of a non-public higher education institution as seen in the Library of the WSB University of ToruńThe article presents an outline of the legal basis of the operation of non-public higher education institutions and their place in the Polish education system. This is the background for the author’s analysis of the library and information systems of business schools that are part of the TEB SA group. The author focuses on extrabudgetary forms of expanding the library of anon-public univer­sity through the use of ministerial and EU grants. The case study presented in the article is that of the Library of the WSB University of Toruń. The author examines, on the basis of books inventoried in 2011–2016, the volume and percentage share of books acquired thanks to EU funds and ministerial grants. She demonstrates how the Library — which, owing to the business nature of the University, has specialist collections at its disposal — acquires new forms of books e-books in mobi and pdf files, e-book readers, audiobooks etc. as well as educational aids. She presents examples of how extrabudgetary funds can support and complement the main budget of the library of anon-public university in its initiatives aimed at creating amodern facility.

This article explores teacher's experiences and students' perceptions of character and values education at the university level. This is a case study of how teacher integrates character education in EFL Reading Comprehension subject at Islamic higher education context. The data from ten students and a teacher are collected through an online interview and questionnaires. The result showed the characters implied in EFL Reading Comprehension Subject are eleven characters include learning method, critical thinking, independence, creativity, courage/self-confidence, communicativeness, responsibility, honesty, religiousness, cooperation, tolerance. Those characters are positively responded by the students in their learning process in the classroom. Besides, the teacher also integrated those values in the teaching and learning process to instill students' character education.

Se presentan los resultados del proyecto de investigación: “El papel de la actividad experimental en la enseñanza del electromagnetismo en la educación superior”. Su  objetivo fue diseñar una propuesta de enseñanza del electromagnetismo, basada en la actividad experimental que contribuya con el proceso enseñanza y aprendizaje a nivel universitario.  Para ello se trabajó con un grupo de estudiantes de ingeniería de dos  instituciones de Educación Superior: Institución Universitaria Pascual Bravo y la Universidad de Antioquia. Los estudiantes que hicieron parte de la propuesta, respondieron un cuestionario de cuatro preguntas sobre electromagnetismo.  Las preguntas fueron seleccionadas de acuerdo a investigaciones previas que sobre el mismo tema se realizaron en estudiantes que solamente habían realizado el curso teórico.  Los resultados de este último grupo, evidenció dificultades para explicar fenómenos relacionados con el electromagnetismo, mientras que el grupo de estudiantes que realizó el trabajo experimental, mostró una mejor comprensión del fenómeno, logrando estructurar y organizar sus explicaciones.ABSTRACT The results of the research are presented: "The role of experimental activity in teaching electromagnetics in higher education." Their goal was to design a proposal for teaching electromagnetism, based on the experimental activity that contributes to the teaching and learning process at the university level. To do this, we worked with a group of engineering students from two institutions of higher education: University Pascual Bravo Institute and the University of Antioquia. Students who were part of the proposal, a questionnaire of four questions on electromagnetism. The questions were selected based on previous research on the same topic were conducted in students who had just completed the theoretical course. The results of the latter group showed difficulty explaining phenomena related to electromagnetism, while the group of students who performed the experimental work, showed a better understanding of the phenomenon, managing to structure and organize their explanations.

An interview with Professor Roberto Leher, Rector of the largest federal public university in Brazil, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), on the situation of higher education in the country and in Latin America and the Caribbean. The interview addresses the preparation of Asociación de Universidades Grupo Montevideo (AUGM), created in 1990 and composed by 35 public universities from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay, for the III Regional Conference for Higher Education (CRES), held in Cordoba, Argentina, in June 2018. The interview addresses, among other aspects, higher education as a public good and fundamental human social and individual right; the commodification of the sector in Latin America; the influence of international organizations in the directions of higher education around the world; the advances of science and the challenges in the development of the countries of the region; the importance of CRES for the future of the university, as well as the role of student participation and mobilization in this scenario. At the end of the interview, there is an analysis with comments made by Professor Mario Luiz Neves de Azevedo, researcher of the field in Brazil.

Organizational learning has been discussed by a number of scholars. However, few of them have empirically addressed the issue in an educational context. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the limited previous research on organizational learning in higher education by examining the impact of employee participation on the organizational learning process and the relationship between the organizational learning process and performance of a public university in Vietnam. A survey of 136 employees of a public university in Hanoi, targeted at managers, lecturers and researchers having more than a 5-year working experience, was conducted in 2015. Multiple regression techniques were used to analyse the data. The study findings indicate that the organizational learning process is positively influenced by employee participation in decision-making and significantly associates with the performance of the university.
