OBJECTIVE: Introduce a program for the management of scientific research in a General Hospital employing the business management tools Lean Six Sigma and PMBOK for project management in this area. METHODS: The Lean Six Sigma methodology was used to improve the management of the institution's scientific research through a specific tool (DMAIC) for identification, implementation and posterior analysis based on PMBOK practices of the solutions found. RESULTS: We present our solutions for the management of institutional research projects at the Sociedade Beneficente Israelita Brasileira Albert Einstein. The solutions were classified into four headings: people, processes, systems and organizational culture. A preliminary analysis of these solutions showed them to be completely or partially compliant to the processes described in the PMBOK Guide. CONCLUSION: In this post facto study, we verified that the solutions drawn from a project using Lean Six Sigma methodology and based on PMBOK enabled the improvement of our processes dealing with the management of scientific research carried out in the institution and constitutes a model to contribute to the search of innovative science management solutions by other institutions dealing with scientific research in Brazil.

The paper introduces a conceptual framework that could improve the safety performance measurement process and ultimately the aviation system safety performance. The framework provides an implementation guide on how organisations could design and develop a proactive, measurement tool for assessing and measuring the Acceptable Level of Safety Performance (ALoSP) at sigma (σ) level, a statistical measurement unit. In fact, the methodology adapts and combines quality management tools, a leading indicators programme and Lean-Six Sigma methodology to formally measure and continuously improve a stable and in-control safety management process by reducing safety defects and variability from core organisational processes and objectives. The implementation guide was empirically tested and validated with data collected and analysed within a period of nine months by the safety department of a complex aviation organisation operating a large transport aircraft fleet.

The article considers the integrated Lean Six Sigma methodology. The author shows that today enterprises use the Lean Six Sigma methodology to improve production indicators, optimize the product portfolio, achieve strategic goals. The paper clarifies the essence of the American (Six Sigma) and Japanese (Lean) enterprise management methodology. The study highlights some features, system tools and methods of continuous improvement in the framework of the implementation of the integrated Lean Six Sigma methodology at the enterprise. The article highlights a number of key success factors for the implementation of this methodology. The paper proposes the criteria for assessing the readiness of the enterprise to its implementation. The scientific novelty of the study is that the author identified the advantages and problems of implementing the Lean Six Sigma methodology at enterprises. The author made a proposal on the need for mandatory assessment of the company's readiness to work on the Lean Six Sigma methodology using fuzzy logic tools, and also highlighted the stages of its implementation. The practical significance of the work done is that it can serve as a basis for further scientific research in the field of the Lean Six Sigma methodology.

This article seeks to discuss how project management can help the Lean Six Sigma methodology impact project outcomes. It is found that projects managers play a vital role in the successful implementation of the LSS tools and on meeting customer requirements. This article analyzes and identifies the factors and constraints that projects face with the implementation of Lean Six Sigma methodology within the project management perspective. Further, this study provides a comparative analysis of different studies based on LSS tools and analyzes their applicability in different industries. This study found that there is a strong need for project management concepts and tools in the LSS methodology and vice versa. The article also identifies specific concepts and tools of project management that can help to improve the likelihood of success of LSS projects and initiatives. This article discusses how these project specific concepts and tools can be effectively used in LSS environments.

Lean six-sigma methodology focuses on continuous improvement approach with an emphasis on improving the product quality and reducing waste. Recent studies of lean six-sigma methodology indicated that this methodology commonly focus on four areas of performance namely quality, cost time and service. In this paper, an environmental performance is proposed into lean six-sigma methodology. An environmental performance needs to be integrated into lean six-sigma as a new paradigm of lean six-sigma methodology to achieve overall competitiveness of product.
