In the context of the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics, a generalized theory of coordinate transformations is analyzed. On the basis of such theory, a misconception concerning the superiority of the Hamiltonian formalism with respect to the Lagrangian one is criticized. The consequent discussion introduces the relationship between the classical Hamilton action and the covariance properties of equations of motion, at the level of undergraduate teaching courses in theoretical mechanics.

We find the relationship between the Jackiw-Teitelboim model of two-dimensional gravity and the SL (2, R) induced gravity. These are shown to be related to a two-dimensional gauge theory obtained by dimensionally reducing the Chern-Simons action of the 2+1 dimensional gravity. We present an explicit solution to the equations of motion of the auxiliary field of the Jackiw-Teitelboim model in the light-cone gauge. A renormalization of the cosmological constant is also given.

In this review, we consider first-order gravity in four dimensions. In particular, we focus our attention in formulations where the fundamental variables are a tetrad [Formula: see text] and a [Formula: see text] connection [Formula: see text]. We study the most general action principle compatible with diffeomorphism invariance. This implies, in particular, considering besides the standard Einstein–Hilbert–Palatini term, other terms that either do not change the equations of motion, or are topological in nature. Having a well defined action principle sometimes involves the need for additional boundary terms, whose detailed form may depend on the particular boundary conditions at hand. In this work, we consider spacetimes that include a boundary at infinity, satisfying asymptotically flat boundary conditions and/or an internal boundary satisfying isolated horizons boundary conditions. We focus on the covariant Hamiltonian formalism where the phase space [Formula: see text] is given by solutions to the equations of motion. For each of the possible terms contributing to the action, we consider the well-posedness of the action, its finiteness, the contribution to the symplectic structure, and the Hamiltonian and Noether charges. For the chosen boundary conditions, standard boundary terms warrant a well posed theory. Furthermore, the boundary and topological terms do not contribute to the symplectic structure, nor the Hamiltonian conserved charges. The Noether conserved charges, on the other hand, do depend on such additional terms. The aim of this manuscript is to present a comprehensive and self-contained treatment of the subject, so the style is somewhat pedagogical. Furthermore, along the way, we point out and clarify some issues that have not been clearly understood in the literature.

In this paper, we consider the problem to minimize the energy consumption for controlled multibody systems utilizing passive elastic elements for energy storage useful for robot systems in manufacturing. Firstly, based on the linearized equations of motion, we analyze the relationship between the consumed energy and the operating time, and the optimal trajectory using optimal control theory. Then, we verify the analytical solution by comparing with the numerical one computed considering the full nonlinear dynamics. After that we derive a condition for the operating time to be optimal, and propose the optimal design method for springs. Finally, we show the effectiveness of the design method by applying it to a 2DOF manipulator.

In this survey, we present a geometric description of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics on Lie algebroids. The flexibility of the Lie algebroid formalism allows us to analyze systems subject to nonholonomic constraints, mechanical control systems, Discrete Mechanics and extensions to Classical Field Theory within a single framework. Various examples along the discussion illustrate the soundness of the approach.

A black hole in a Schwarzschild spacetime is considered. A transformation is proposed that describes the relationship between the coordinate systems exterior and interior to an event horizon. Application of this transformation permits considerations of the (a)symmetry of a range of phenomena taking place on both sides of the event horizon. The paper investigates two distinct problems of a uniformly accelerated particle. In one of these, although the equations of motion are the same in the regions on both sides, the solutions turn out to be very different. This manifests the differences of the properties of these two ranges.
