The major concern on the deterioration of reinforced concrete structure is due to the corrosion of steel reinforcement from the aggressive environment such as chloride penetration. Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is an advanced concrete material having ultra-high strength with excellent durability properties. Inclusion of nano metaclay in UHPC is expected to overcome the chloride transport properties in UHPC by providing nano filler effect. Two (2) assessments were conducted which are chloride content and chloride depth were examined. All the concrete specimens were immersed in 3% NaCl solution up to 365 days and the tests conducted were performed at 3, 7, 28, 56, 91, 182 and 365 days. Response surface method (RSM) was performed to evaluate the interaction and relationship between operating variables (compressive strength and nano metaclay content). Based on RSM analysis, inclusion of nano metaclay in UHPC have good relationship towards the chloride resistance characteristics and adequate durability performance in terms of chloride penetration resistance. The results exhibited that inclusion of 1% nano metaclay significantly and positively affect in term of chloride penetration resistance.

As with the leakage of stray current in the surrounding medium, the chloride transport in concrete is influenced by the stray current and loading of the subway structure. This paper presents the results of the experimental study on the chloride transport properties of concrete under the combined action of stray current and sustained compressive loading. First, an experiment was setup to explore the chloride transport in the subway structure as the concrete specimen embedded with steel under test current and study the influence of the existence of steel on the chloride transport profiles in concrete under stray current. Then, to investigate the combined effect of stray current and loading on the chloride transport properties, an improved experiment was designed with stray current and sustained compressive loading. The chloride transport profiles were measured, respectively, subjected to different stray currents and compressive stress levels. The experimental results indicated that stray current and sustained compressive loading have a significant influence on the chloride transport properties of concrete, and the loading threshold existed as the turning point of the chloride transport rate. Based on the experimental data and migration theory, the prediction model of chloride transport in concrete under stray current and sustained compressive loading was established and verified by the experimental measurements, and the steel corrosion-induced cover cracking was studied, and the comparison indicated that the numerical results were consistent with the experimental results.

The concrete lining in subway tunnels often undergoes cracking damage in coastal cities. The combination of cracked tunnel lining structures and high concentrations of corrosive ions in the groundwater (e.g., chlorine) can accelerate concrete erosion, reduce the mechanical performance of the lining structures and shorten the tunnel service life. This paper investigates the chloride ion concentration in the groundwater of several subway tunnels in the coastal city of Qingdao, China. Indoor experiments and numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the chloride ion transport behaviour and service performance of cracked concrete linings. The results are applied to predict the service life of lining structures. The crack depth in concrete linings is found to have the most significant effect on the transport rate of chloride ions, followed by the crack width. The numerical simulations are carried out using COMSOL software to study the chloride transport behaviour in cracked specimens and predict the service lifetimes of lining structures of different thicknesses, and the results correspond well with the experimental data. The durability of a concrete lining can be enhanced by increasing the thickness of the protective concrete layer. Additional measures are proposed for treating cracked concrete linings to resist chloride ion attack in subway tunnels.
