It was reported that thyroid hormones decreased Cu(2+)-induced low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation in vitro. Here, we investigated free radical scavenging capacities of thyroid hormones (3,5,3'-tri-iodo-L-thyronine (T(3)), thyroxine (T(4)) and 3,3',5'-tri-iodo-L-thyronine (rT(3))) and structural analogues (L-thyronine (T(0)), 3,5,3'tri-iodothyroacetic acid (TA(3)) and 3,5,3',5'-tetra-iodothyroacetic acid (TA(4))), using three different models of free radical generation. T(0), T(3) and TA(3) slowed down production of conjugated diene and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances during LDL oxidation by 2,2'-azobis-[2-amidinopropane] (water-soluble), whereas rT(3), T(4) and TA(4) had practically no effect. In this system, T(0) was the more active compound. Using a 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (lipid-soluble) test, all compounds also revealed free radical scavenging capacities, but rT(3), T(4) and TA(4) were more active than T(0), T(3) and TA(3). T(3) was able to scavenge superoxide anion and hydroxyl radicals generated in an aqueous phase by a xanthine-xanthine oxidase system, as measured by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. It may be concluded that: (1) thyroid hormones and analogues with a 4'-hydroxy diphenylether structure have free radical scavenging capacities, (2) this property is influenced by the number of iodines on the phenolic ring, and (3) thyroid hormone scavenging capacity should not be the only mechanism explaining their protective effect on Cu(2+)-induced LDL oxidation. The physiological significance of the findings is discussed.

The present study investigated the effect of 1-MCP on bioavailability of Lingwu long jujube stored at 0 °C for 60 days. At the end of the storage, compared with the control samples, Lingwu long jujube treated with 1-MCP exhibited higher Vc bioaccessibility, total phenolic content and free radical scavenging capacity, which demonstrated that 1-MCP treatment could provide a better effect on maintaining the bioavailability of Lingwu long jujube.

The composition of five pear varieties (‘Abate Fètel’, ‘Bosc’, ‘Williams’, ‘Conference’, ‘Packham’s Triumph’) grown in Nagykanizsa was investigated in three consecutive years (2008, 2009, 2010). A storage experiment was performed in 2008. Four winter pear cultivars were kept in an ULO store for four months and their parameters measured after two and four months. The parameters tested were: size, weight, water soluble solids, titratable acidity, glucose, fructose, sucrose, water soluble pectin, total polyphenols, free radical scavenging capacity, copper and zinc content. The fruits of ‘Conference’ and ‘Bosc’ varieties were found to contain the highest sucrose and total sugar content, while ‘Abate Fétel’ had the lowest sucrose and highest glucose levels among cultivars tested. ‘Williams’ pear was the most acidic. Brix, total sugar, sucrose and water soluble pectin were decreased during storage. Titratable acidity slightly decreased in fruits of Conference pear. Polyphenols and free radical scavenging capacity did not show a significant change during storage.

Background: Pyrazole is an important class of heterocyclic compound, has been shown to exhibit diverse biological and pharmacological activities such as anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, antioxidant, etc. Methods: In this study, a series of novel 3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole derivatives containing hydrazine 4a-l have been synthesized via the reaction of the 2-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)acetohydrazide. All synthesized compounds have been tested for their in vitro antioxidant activities via utilization of 1,1-biphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) as a free radical scavenging reagent. Results: The data reported herein indicates that compound 4k showed potential radical scavenging capacity and compounds 4f and 4g exhibited best activity for the iron binding while comparing with positive controls. Conclusion: Good activity was noted for some compounds. In particular, compound 4k showed the highest antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 22.79 ± 3.64 and 1.35 ± 0.66 μg/mL in the DPPH and ABTS tests, respectively.

Background: Indian domesticated chickens have a wide variety of phenotypes. Unlike other chicken breeds, Kadaknath chicken has black meat and is used by indigenous tribal people for its invigorating and therapeutic properties. To look for the functional traits that might be contributing towards the acclaimed benefits, free radical scavenging capacity and metal chelating ability of Kadaknath meat were explored for the first time in comparison to the commercial Cobb broiler. Methods: During the period 2018-2020, breast and thigh meat were collected from chickens (n=20/ group) at their commercial slaughter age. Meat extract was used for qualitative evaluation of protein as well as the antioxidant capacity utilizing diverse in vitro methods corresponding to different antioxidation mechanisms.Result: Protein concentration (g/100g of tissue) in Kadaknath breast (25.25 ± 0.31) and thigh (19.98 ± 0.29) meat was significantly (P less than 0.05) higher than the Cobb. Breast meat had better scavenging capacity than the thigh. The superiority of the antioxidant capacity of Kadaknath meat was explicitly established by more than one in vitro assay. Free radical scavenging assays viz. 2,2-azinobis (3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS); 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and Cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) had significantly (P less than 0.05) higher values for Kadaknath in comparison to the Cobb broiler meat. Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) values (mM Fe2+/g of tissue) were also more in breast meat of Kadaknath (26.97±0.37) than the Cobb (15.24±0.40). Similarly, FRAP values were higher in Kadaknath (33.85±0.47) than the Cobb (19.2±0.31) thigh meat. Kadaknath had higher antioxidant capacity as reflected by metal chelation inhibition value. These findings help to explain the unique nutritional and functional characteristics of Kadaknath black-bone chicken and provide basic research data for exploring the commercial potential of its meat in the fields of functional foods, cosmeceuticals and nuutraceuticals.

The antioxidative and free radical scavenging effects of four ecdysteroids, 20-hydroxyecdysone (E1), 25-deoxy-11,20-dihydroxyecdysone (E2), 24-(2-hydroxyethyl)-20-hydroxyecdysone (E3), and 20-hydroxyecdysone-20,22-monoacetonide (E4), isolated from the Chinese herbSerratula strangulata have been investigated in vitro. These ecdysteroids could protect human erythrocytes against oxidative hemolysis induced by a water-soluble azo initiator 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane hydrochloride) (AAPH). They could also inhibit the peroxidation of rat liver microsomes induced by hydroxyl radicals, as monitored by the formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and prevent radical-induced decrease of membrane fluidity as determined by fluorescence polarization. They reacted with galvinoxyl radicals in homogeneous solution, and the pseudo-first-order rate constants were determined spectrophotometrically by following the disappearance of galvinoxyl radicals. Compounds E1 and (or) E3 were the most active in both antioxidative and radical-scavenging reactions.Key words: ecdysteroid, Serratula strangulata, free radical, erythrocyte, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant.
