Histological and radiochemical techniques for assessing thyroid activity were compared on yearling brook trout acclimated at 5, 12, and 15 °C.The mean thyroid follicle epithelial cell height was 7.4 μ (range 6.0–8.6 μ) at 5 °C; 3.5 μ (range 2.9–3.9 μ) at 12 °C, and 2.3 μ (range 1.9–2.9 μ) at 15 °C. Assuming that a taller epithelial cell height indicates greater thyroid activity, then an inverse relationship between thyroid activity and acclimation temperature exists. Both the uptake of radioiodide by the thyroid (T/S) and the clearance of radioiodide from the serum were greater at higher temperatures. Serum PB125I production was negligible within 8 days after radioiodide injection and the conversion ratio could not be applied as an index of thyroid function, Assuming, however, that the thyroid radioiodide uptake is an index of thyroid activity, then there is a direct relationship between thyroid activity and acclimation temperature. In view of the marked discrepancy between these histological and radiochemical techniques, fractional rates of turnover of serum thyroxine were compared by determining the biological half-life (t½) for serum PB125I after L-thyroxine-125I intraperitoneal injection at different temperatures. The serum PB125I clearance curves were complex and tentative t½ values of 18.0 days (5 °C, 3.2 days (12 °C), and 1.5 days (15 °C) were obtained. These results indicate a more rapid serum PBI turnover at higher temperatures and support the radiochemical measurements.

A histopathological comparison was made of thyroid and liver tissue from weanling mice and rats fed six different diets. The experimental diets contained mustard or rapeseed meal (RSM) varieties of high glucosinolate content, namely, Oriental mustard (Brassica juncea), Yellow Sarson (B. campestris), Target (B. napus) and Fe-treated Target (glucosinolate hydrolyzed by FeSO4). The two control diets contained a low glucosinolate variety of rapeseed meal, Bronowski (B. napus), or casein to provide approximately 20% dietary protein. Seven mice and seven rats were fed each diet 4 and 6 weeks, respectively. Both body growth rate and the histopathology of the thyroid gland were affected by the inclusion of rapeseed meals in the diet. The effect was more marked in rats than in mice. Whereas the high glucosinolate-containing RSM (cult Target) diet produced poorest performance in rats (P < 0.01) and mice (P < 0.05), the low glucosinolate RSM (cult Bronowski) diet was as efficiently utilized as the casein diet. Epithelial cell heights of the thyroid follicles were increased in the mice and rats fed Target RSM, but only rats showed a high degree of papillary formation. Liver involvement at the microscopic level was slight. The measurement of epithelial cell height showed most promise as an accurate indicator of cell size.

It is well known that epithelial hyperplasia (benign hypertrophy) is common in the aging prostate of dogs and man. In contrast, little evidence is available for abnormal epithelial cell growth in seminal vesicles of aging animals. Recently, enlarged seminal vesicles were reported in senescent mice, however, that enlargement resulted from increased storage of secretion in the lumen and occurred concomitant to epithelial hypoplasia in that species. The present study is concerned with electron microscopic observations of changes occurring in the pseudostratified epithelium of the seminal vescles of aging rats. Special attention is given to certain non-epithelial cells which have entered the epithelial layer.

There are conflicting reports regarding some fine structural details of arteries from several animal species. Buck denied the existence of a sub-endothelial space, while Karrer and Keech described a space of variable width which separates the endothelium from the underlying internal elastic lamina in aortas of aging rats and mice respectively. The present communication deals with the ultrastrueture of the interface between the endothelial cell layer and the internal elastic lamina as observed in carotid arteries from rabbits of varying ages.

During a project in which regenerative changes were studied in autotransplanted canine kidneys, intranuclear crystals were seen in a small number of tubular epithelial cells. These crystalline structures were seen in the control specimens and also in regenerating specimens; the main differences being in size and number of them. The control specimens showed a few tubular epithelial cell nuclei almost completely occupied by large crystals that were not membrane bound. Subsequent follow-up biopsies of the same kidneys contained similar intranuclear crystals but of a much smaller size. Some of these nuclei contained several small crystals. The small crystals occurred at one week following transplantation and were seen even four weeks following transplantation. As time passed, the small crystals appeared to fuse to form larger crystals.

The pigment epithelium is located between the choriocapillary and the visual cells. The pigment epithelial cell is characterized by a large amount of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) in its cytoplasm. In addition, the pigment epithelial cell of some lower vertebrate has myeloid body as a specialized form of the SER. Generally, SER is supposed to work in the lipid metabolism. However, the functions of abundant SER and myeloid body in the pigment epithelial cell are still in question. This paper reports an attempt, to depict the functions of these organelles in the frog retina by administering one of phospholipid precursors.

Space flight, with its unique environmental constraints such as immobilization, decreased and increased pressures, and radiation, is known to affect testicular morphology and spermatogenesis. Selye, summarized the manifestations of physiological response to nonspecific stress and he pointed out that atrophy of the gonads always occurred. Reports of data collected from two dogs flown in space for 22 days (Cosmos 110) indicate that there was an increase of 30 to 70% atypical spermatozoa when compared to ground based controls. Seventy-five days after the flight the abnormalities had decreased to the high normal value of 30% and mating of these dogs after this period produced normal offspring, suggesting complete recovery. Effects of immobilization and increased gravity were investigated by spinning rats and mice at 2x g for 8-9 weeks. A decrease in testicular weight was noted in spun animals when compared to controls. Immobilization has been show to cause arrest of spermatogenesis in Macaca meminstrins.
