In the past years, the concept of Transit-Oriented Development has been adopted in cities and countries including Malaysia and Singapore. The integration of land use and public transport stations through Transit Oriented Development (TOD) as part of urban and cities strategy is highly acclaimed in promoting sustainable development concept in cities development. To understand the performance of TODs implementation in Klang Valley, this study has selected eleven stations in of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Putrajaya Line as case studies. This paper aims to evaluate the current implementation of TODs in Malaysia, benchmarked against the TOD land use composition and percentage from Singapore’s model. The findings show that Raja Uda, Ampang Park and Persiaran KLCC stations show significant performance. However, Bandar Malaysia North station displayed poor result with the lowest percentage of residential and commercial components. All stations did not achieve the ideal TOD value for residential land use and eight out of eleven stations recorded higher than the ideal TOD value for roads. However, highest number of stations achieved the ideal TOD value for mixed-use and commercial land uses. These results would help policymakers to improve the current implementation of TODs in Malaysia.

Development plan of monorail and tramway in Surabaya City aimed to encourage the movement based transit. TOD (Transit Oriented Development) is model for integration of transportation and land use in order to encourage the transit ridership. The result of study in worldwide show the success of TOD application in increasing the usage of transit mode by developing policies on land uses around station/terminal. Therefore, it needs to adopt TOD in transit area of Surabaya City to achieve the sustainable transportation. There has been a boom in American rail transit construction in the past two decades. That new investment has prompted the question of what planners can do to support rail transit. One popular answer has been transit-oriented development (TOD), increasingly described as a comprehensive strategy for rail-based land-use planning throughout an urban area. This is most clearly illustrated by Bernick and Cervero’s (1997) description of how such projects can link together to create “transit metropolises” where rail is a viable transportation option for many of the region’s residents. In addition, TOD provides an opportunity to examine the regulatory issues discussed in chapter 6, both because it is an explicit attempt to use urban design as transportation policy and because the intergovernmental issues are especially stark in relation to these developments. Having discussed how travelers behave in the first part of this book, we now ask what we know about how cities behave. Stated in general form, the question is rather broad. It concerns the process by which cities and other land-use authorities decide where to put streets, how to structure the local hierarchy of streets, when to develop more or less densely, how to position employment centers relative to residential areas, and so on. Still, the feasibility of land-use plans with transportation goals depends critically on how such authorities behave. Any discussion of the effectiveness of these strategies must address both how communities plan for transportation and how travelers respond to those plans. The primary transportation goal of TOD generally, as currently practiced, is to coordinate land-use policies to support rail transit. In particular, focusing both residential and commercial development near rail transit stations is aimed at increasing rail ridership (e.g., Bernick, 1990; Bernick and Hall, 1990; Calthorpe, 1993; Cervero, 1993; Bernick and Cervero, 1997). Some evidence suggests that residents near rail transit stations are two to five times more likely to commute by rail when compared with persons living elsewhere in the same urban area (Pushkarev and Zupan, 1977; Bernick and Carroll, 1991; Cervero, 1994d).

Land use policy is at the center of suburban political economies because everything has to happen somewhere but nothing happens by itself. This book explores how well a century of strategic land-use decisions served the public interest in Montgomery County, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C. Transformed from a rural hinterland into the home of a million people and a half-million jobs, Montgomery County built a national reputation for innovation in land use policy—including inclusive zoning, linking zoning to master plans, preservation of farmland and open space, growth management, and transit-oriented development. A pervasive theme of the book involves the struggle for influence over land use policy between two virtual suburban republics. Developers, their business allies, and sympathetic officials sought a virtuous cycle of market-guided growth in which land was a commodity and residents were customers who voted with their feet. Homeowners, environmentalists, and their allies saw themselves as citizens and stakeholders with moral claims on the way development occurred and made their wishes known at the ballot box. This book evaluates how well the development pattern produced by decades of planning decisions served the public interest.

Urban forms are shaped under transport-land use connection. According to literature reviews, urban forms can be divided into six kinds from 1880 to 1990, traditional walking city, industrial transit city, automobile-oriented development city (compact or sprawl), transit-related development city and transit-oriented development city (TOD). Although many cities in the world had attempted to shape their urban forms like TOD in the 1990s, they didnt have definite goals and strategies to achieve it. On the other hand, there is neither systematic discussion nor comparative analysis concerning how to determine the original urban form of these cities. In this case, it is unlikely for them to become a TOD city in effective and suitable ways. As a sequence, this paper aims at reviewing literature , designing two sets of strategies to shape TOD urban form for policy-makers reference.

Transport is a link between territories with different types of land use in urban areas. At the same time, the improved accessibility associated with the transport network can lead to increased segregation and a change in land use. The article analyzes the road network of the Najaf and Kufa cities, Najaf province, Iraq, in order to identify the spatial classification of roads and streets. Based on the analysis, three main types of roads and streets are identified with respect to their structural features and characteristics: regional, city and district. The dependence of the typology and location of transit-oriented zones on the classification of the road network is indicated. In the process of analyzing the study area, the most optimal points for the practice of transit-oriented development (TOD) are identified, the territories most favorable for the location of transit-oriented zones of regional, city and district significance are introduced, the main characteristics of these zones are given. In order to reach goals, this article includes the collection of data and the creation of a database for land use applying a geographic information systems (GIS) environment. The result of the spatial analysis are five regional nodes, six urban nodes and seven district nodes
