There are frequent reports from around the world of wild animals being poisoned with anticoagulants. Granulated baits can result in primary or secondary poisoning of non-target animals. Moreover, there are several diseases including infections that influence haemostasis in wild animals. The present study focused on fallow deer (Dama dama) for which insufficient data on physiological values of coagulation parameters are available. Six parameters of blood coagulation were established in clinically normal fallow deer from a game enclosure in North Moravia (Czech Republic). The fibrinogen content of 1.94 g/l is in agreement with the results obtained by other authors. Factor VIII and IX concentrations amounted to 198.42% and 169.91% of human concentration of these parameters in blood. These have never before been measured for fallow deer, but most animal species have concentrations of these factors higher than humans. Prothrombin time (PT), average activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and thrombin time (TT) were assessed as 20.99 s, 33.76 s, and 24.78 s, respectively. Prothrombin time assessed in the present study was longer compared to available data, while APTT is in agreement with the previous data. Thrombin time value is a new piece of information and is comparable with TT values obtained in other ruminants. The possible explanation for the prolonged PT may be the stress associated with yarding and handling the animals which is reported to cause haemorrhages or changes in haemostatic parameters in deer. Interestingly, males had significantly longer clotting times compared to females.

Abstract The aim of the study was to evaluate the megakaryocyte lineage of bone marrow and coagulation parameters in fallow deer during the last month of pregnancy. The animals were managed in the barn-feeding system. Twenty female fallow deer, aged 2-3 years, divided into 2 groups were used in the study. Group 1 comprised the females in the last month of pregnancy, and the non-pregnant females were used as the control. All the animals were clinically healthy. Coagulation parameters were measured in all the deer: thrombin time (TT), prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and plasma concentrations of fibrinogen, D-dimer, and antithrombin III. A quantitative assessment of bone marrow was carried out for the erythroblastic, myeloid, lymphoid, monocyte-macrophage, and megakaryopoietic cell lines. A detailed analysis of megakaryocyte lineage was performed after whole blood and platelet count. There were no significant differences in the erythroblast, granulocyte, monocyte-macrophage and lymphoid systems between the animal groups. Thrombocyte count in the pregnant deer was lower than that found in the control group. Bone marrow smears revealed a slightly decreased megakaryocyte count, while the megakaryoblast and promegakaryocyte counts were unchanged. The analysis of coagulation parameters showed increased levels of fibrinogen, thrombin time, prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time in the pregnant animals. The study suggested a hyperactivation of the coagulation system with a slight reduction in the megakaryocyte count in bone marrow, and a reduction in platelet count in peripheral blood at the end of pregnancy.

Bleeding time in rats was markedly prolonged after the adminstration of the water extract of Hsien-Ho-T'sao. This antihemostatic effect was more marked in the group of i.p. injection of the drug than in the group of p.o. administration for 2 to 7 consecutive days. Blood coagulation studies showed that plasma prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time and stypven time were prolonged, while thrombin time adnd fibrinogen level were not changed. The thromboelastographic recording showed that reation time was prolonged and maximal elasticity of clot was decreased. In addition, ADP- and collagen- induced aggregations of platelet-rich plasma was suppressed. In conclusion, the prolongation of the bleeding time might be due to both anticoagulant and antiplatelet action of the drug.

Avian blood coagulation studies revealed the mean one-stage prothrombin time of plasma from 100 chickens, 10 weeks of age, as determined with chicken brain thromboplastin, to be 11.4 seconds, compared with 10–300 seconds found by other workers; the mean prothrombin content was 137% of human prothrombin levels, as determined by the one-stage prothrombin-time technique, but only 53% by the adsorption and elution technique used. Fibrinogen determinations on the same plasma revealed a mean of 346 mg/ 100 ml of plasma, compared with 250–400 for humans. Chicken thrombin was prepared which gave a mean thrombin time on the same, but buffered, plasma of 12 seconds. Coagulation of chicken plasma with chicken thrombin was found to be highly sensitive to variations in pH, being 12 seconds at pH 7.1, but lengthening to over 60 seconds at pH 7.7. Greatly increased clotting times of chicken plasma with bovine thrombin and with rabbit thromboplastin indicated evidence of species specificity.

The influence of different terms of laser irradiation on vascular-platelet and coagulation units of blood coagulation system is investigated. The rats were irradiated with a laser diode in the red spectrum (650 nm) with a power of 50 mW. Rats were divided into two groups: group I - rats, which were irradiated daily for 2 minutes; group II - rats, which were irradiated daily for 4 minutes. Euthanasia of animals was performed on the 7th and 14th days after the onset of irradiation. For the study of the blood coagulation system of rats used biochemical coagulogram with the analysis of the following indicators - the content of fibrinogen, thrombin and prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), platelet count. The content of lymphocytes and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were determined also. In the work used blood plasma with sodium citrate. It has been found that daily four-minute laser irradiation in the abdominal area for two weeks leads to a decrease in the concentration of factor I blood clotting (fibrinogen) and an increase in thrombin time. At the same time, prolongation of prothrombin time and APTT was detected, indicating a deficiency of other factors of blood coagulation - II, V, VII-XII, and the presence of anticoagulant status, which may be associated with inhibition of the internal pathway of clotting. Thrombocytopenia is probably caused by the increased destruction of platelets or their insufficient formation as a result of dysfunction of hematopoietic organs. The two-minute effect of laser irradiation does not affect the clinical and biochemical parameters of the blood coagulation system of rats after a weekly daily action of the laser diode. Two weeks irradiation is accompanied by processes of hypocoagulation, as evidenced by a decrease in fibrinogen levels, platelet counts, and a simultaneous increase in APTT, thrombin and prothrombin time.

Abstract Abstract 5248 In India trauma related deaths occur every 1.9 minutes. Mortality in severe traumatic injury (ISS>16) is six times higher in developing country like India. Coagulopathy is observed in almost 25– 30% of trauma patients which itself is an independent risk factor for haemorrhage. Coagulopathy detected early after injury is indicative of injury severity and itself is a prognostic factor for mortality. Aim To find out the usefulness of thromboelastography (TEG) in detecting coagulopathy in contrast to conventional methods of plasma based standard coagulation parameters (PT, aPTT, TT, fibrinogen, D-dimer) Objective To detect coagulopathy early by TEG in trauma patients within 24 hrs after injury which can be useful to guide haemostatic therapies to reduce mortality. Materials and methods Patients admitted to trauma casualty were studied within 24 hrs after injury. Native whole blood was withdrawn through venepuncture appropriately in syringe using 21G needle and TEG was performed within 2 mins. Blood was also collected in citrated tube to assess standard coagulation parameters (prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, thrombin time, fibrinogen, D-dimer) and also by means of thromboelastography. Results Patients (n=87,New ISS-24.78(mean)) admitted to J.P.N Apex trauma centre casualty from 1st April,2011 to 31st July,2011 were studied. The cases included in the study were isolated head injury (n=40, NISS-25.87(mean)), multiple trauma with head injury (n=13,NISS – 30.69 (mean)) and trauma other than head injury (n=34, NISS-21.24 (mean)).Thromboelastography was performed using whole blood (n=69) and citrated blood (n=18). Coagulation tests were performed on all 87 patients using both TEG and conventional coagulation parameters. Total 52 patients showed coagulopathy by TEG and only 14 patients showed coagulopathy by standard coagulation parameters (prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time). Only in 10 cases coagulopathy was detected by both methods. 4 patients showed coagulopathy only by conventional methods while 42 patients showed coagulopathy by only Thromboelastography (TEG). To find out whether there is any stastistical significance in the observed apparently better result by TEG, McNemar Test was carried out and P value was <0.0001. Conclusion Thromboelastography could be a better technique as compared to conventional measurements of PT, aPTT, TT, Fibrinogen, D-dimer in early detection of coagulopathy in trauma patients. A total of 12 dogs were used in the study in two groups as ISO(n = 6) and SEVO(n = 6), which were brought to the clinic for ovariohysterectomy. Premedication was performed by the intravenous administration of 0.3 mg/kg midazolam, followed by 5 mg/kg intravenous bolus propofol infusion. This was followed by 1.5% ISO administration in the ISO group and 2% sevoflurane administration in the SEVO group for anesthesia maintenance. Before anesthesia, prothrombin time (PT), active partial thromboplastin time (APTT), thrombin time (TT), and fibrinogen (FIB) level were measured at the 0th minute before anesthesia, at the 15th and 30th minutes during anesthesia, and at the 0th minute and the 1st hour after anesthesia. It was observed that the changes in TT, PT, APTT, and FIB level with time were not significant in the ISO and SEVO groups. It was determined that the changes in TT between the measurements in groups at the 30th minute during anesthesia and 0th minute after anesthesia were statistically significant (P less than 0.05)

Fallow deer meat (venison) is a new product acquired from farm-raised and wild animals. Nowadays, people are more concerned about their health, and therefore, they search for high quality, “healthy” products. Farming of fallow deer is ecological and friendly to the environment. Animals are kept in pasture conditions which resemble their natural environment. Venison is considered healthy meat, low in fat and cholesterol, and high in protein. The aim of this review was to gather and discuss the available literature on factors influencing the quality of venison such as sex, age, slaughter method and housing system, feeding, hanging method, animal condition, muscle type, and ageing of meat, considering both farm-raised and wild fallow deer.

We evaluated the effect of intravitreal injections of aflibercept (IVA) on blood coagulation parameters including prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and thrombin time (TT), as well as asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), nitric oxide (NO), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and interleukin 18 (IL-18) serum levels in patients with neovascular AMD (nAMD). Twenty-two eyes of 22 patients with nAMD were included. Parameters were evaluated before and 2–3 days after the first IVA injection, and then immediately before and 2–3 days after the third IVA injection. We revealed prolongation of the TT after the initial loading phase of IVA (p = 0.041) and a significant increase in IL-18 serum concentration immediately before the third IVA administration compared to baseline (p = 0.037). There were no statistically significant differences of other parameters and PT, APTT, ADMA, NO, and IL-6 values remained within the normal range at each of the time points of the study. Our results suggest that repeated IVA administration may affect the common blood coagulation pathway, which manifests as a prolongation of the TT value. Furthermore, we showed a significant increase in serum concentration of the pro-inflammatory cytokineIL-18during the initial loading phase of IVA.
