The seasonal dynamics of cicadas (Hemiptera: Cicadina) has been investigated at five model locations of Tigireksky Nature Reserve (Altai Krai). 65 cicada species of 43 genera and 5 families have been identified. Two association clusters have been built: aestival and late-summer/autumnal. The maximum abundance for the families Cicadellidae and Membracidae was observed during latesummer/ autumnal period (early September and late July, respectively).

Clivia mirabilis Rourke is a new pendulous tubular-flowered species from Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve in Northern Cape. Its distribution area is some 800 km outside the previously accepted range of the genus Clivia. This sun-tolerant species is adapted to an arid Mediterranean climate, producing vegetative growth in winter and maturing its seeds rapidly in late summer/early autumn to synchronize with the arrival of winter rains.

AbstractSeasonal dynamics of louse (Phthiraptera) populations on feral pigeons, Columba livia Gmelin (Aves: Columbiformes: Columbidae) were investigated from 2003 to 2012 in southern Manitoba, Canada. Pigeons were infested with: Philopteridae – Campanulotes compar (Burmeister), Columbicola columbae (Linnaeus), and Coloceras tovornikae Tendeiro; Menoponidae – Hohorstiella lata (Piaget). We consider the hypothesis that four species living on the same host show similar seasonal dynamics, coordinated by the life history of the host. Adults of both sexes and nymphs of all four species were present on pigeons throughout the year, consistent with continuous feeding and reproduction. Campanulotes compar and C. columbae populations were low in spring and peaked in September, with C. columbae showing greater seasonal changes for all population parameters. Coloceras tovornikae showed two annual peaks in abundance in spring and late summer, and H. lata was most abundant in the cold months of the year. Over 10 years, the four species showed distinct seasonal dynamics, although they live on the same birds. Seasonal patterns provided no evidence that louse reproduction or abundance is coordinated by the long breeding and moulting seasons of the host.

The purpose of the research is studying seasonal dynamics of gastrointestinal strongylatosis in bison in the Central Region of the Russian Federation.Materials and methods. The bison of different age and sex was studied in the Prioksko-Terrasny Nature Reserve, the Moscow Region. Fresh feces collected near feed troughs in enclosures in different seasons for three years were examined according to generally accepted methods. To analyze the infection rate of gastrointestinal strongylates in the European bison by months throughout the year, we took average monthly temperature and humidity values for 2018, 2019, and 2020 into account.Results and discussion. The maximum number of positive samples was diagnosed in the warm season of the year, namely, in summer and in the first months of autumn: August, September and October 2018 (79.3, 83.3 and 82.9%), August, October, November and December 2019 (73.7, 76.9, 77.1 and 77.8%), and June, July, August and October 2020 (85.6, 87.2, 88.0 and 86.3%). Ambient temperatures and precipitations affect significantly on the time of larvae development in the environment, which can be clearly seen in 2019.

Seasonal dynamics in tropical forests are closely related to the variation in forest canopy gaps. The canopy gaps change continuously in shape and size between the rainy and dry seasons, leading to the variation in the vegetative indicators. To monitor the variation of the canopy gaps, UAVs were used to collect datas in the mentioned tropical forests at an altitude of over 1,000m in Ngoc Linh Nature Reserve, Vietnam with a post-processing image resolution of about 8cm, which allows the detection of relatively small gaps. The analysis results at 10 squares of 1 ha showed a decrease in the area of ​​ canopy gaps from the rainy season in September 2019 to the dry season of May 2020. The mixed broad-leaved or broadleaf forest dominates with a greater variation, when the area of ​​the gaps decreases significantly. The variation in forest canopy gaps and vegetative indicators are closely related to the high differentiation of terrain, the seasonal and the dry season climatic characteristics. The fluctuation of the vegetation cover affects the habitats of the species under the forest canopy such as animals, birds and soil fauna. This is one of the scientific bases that contributes to the management and conservation of flora and fauna biodiversity, especially in mountainous tropical forests such as Ngoc Linh Nature Reserve.

<p>This note reports a comparison between <em>Daphnia</em> phenology in the weather anomalous 2014 and a previous three years period (2011-2013), in a shallow water body of Northern Italy (Bodrio del pastore III) where we recorded <em>D. pulex. </em>In 2011-2013, <em>Daphnia</em> population showed 1-2 density peaks from mid spring to early summer, it declined in July-August and did not recover, from ephippia, until the following spring. The seasonal dynamics was probably related to the species thermal tolerance. Males and ephippial females appeared at the beginning of growth season according to a typical feature of <em>Daphnia</em> populations from temporary habitats. The presence of the <em>Chaoborus</em> larvae resulted in juvenile adaptive predator-avoidance cyclomorphosis. In 2014, in the study area, mean winter air temperature was much warmer than average recorded during the past three years while it was much colder than average in July and August. This reflected the relatively rainy and cloudy summer months: the winter and summer precipitations total was above the previous three years average. In 2014, <em>Daphnia</em> was found all over the year and showed a maximum peak of density in November. The general increase of <em>Daphnia</em> was related to a shift in <em>D. pulex</em> population phenology, seasonal growth started earlier and lasted longer, and to the occurrence of <em>D. longispina</em>. Both species were identified by genetic markers and phylogenetic analyses of <em>ND5</em> sequences placed isolates from the Bodrio del pastore III into the European <em>D. pulex </em>group. Both populations reproduced by cyclical parthenogenesis and showed cyclomorphosis. However, <em>D. pulex</em> produced more males and ephippial females than <em>D. longispina. </em>Their seasonal dynamics were quite different: <em>D. longispina</em> dominated in late summer while <em>D. pulex</em> showed the highest density in November. The presence of <em>D. pulex</em> in the Bodrio is important in the framework of conservation ecology especially because we have showed that it is native European strain instead of the invasive North American clone that replaced native <em>D. pulex </em>throughout Africa and was already recorded in Italy. We provide some indications and discuss how <em>Daphnia</em> phenology of shallow lakes of temperate areas may be susceptible to inter-annual variability in weather conditions.</p>

Distribution and abundance of 27 planktonic crustaceans in an inshore area of Georgian Bay characterized by horizontal differences in temperature and electrolyte concentrations are described on the basis of duplicate vertical hauls on eight dates at six stations during ice-free months of 1970 and on one date at four stations through the ice in 1971. Most species were found at all stations on at least some occasions in 1970, although some differences in periods of maximum abundance between stations, probably related to temperature, were noted. Daphnia ambigua and Diaptomus reighardi were confined to the inner stations. Limnocalanus macrurus and Diaptomus sicilis were absent during periods of highest water temperatures. Eubosmina coregoni, although found throughout the system in February 1971, was restricted to the outer stations in 1970. A marked late-summer drop in populations of all species except Bosmina longirostris and Tropocyclops prasinus mexicanus in 1970 might have been due to either normal seasonal fluctuations or heavy predation by planktivorous fish.

The seasonal changes in incidence and intensity of infestation of yellow perch, Perca flavescens, by adult and larval parasites, both external and internal, were studied over a period of 1 year. Eight species of parasites were numerous enough to permit analysis of seasonal dynamics. Bunodera luciopercae and Echinorhynchus salmonis showed a high infestation in the fall and declined gradually to zero by late summer. New infestation occurred in early fall. Protocephalus pearsei showed the highest incidence in summer and a lower level during the rest of the year without any marked fluctuations. The intensity of infestation remained relatively constant throughout the year. Ergasilus confusus reached its peak of incidence in the summer, declined through the fall and winter, and began increasing in spring. Intensity of infestation showed parallel changes. In February, however, both incidence and intensity were high. Diplostomulum huronense showed a high intensity of infestation in November. The incidence remained fairly constant throughout the rest of the year. Urocleidius adspectus showed no seasonal variability as regards incidence but the intensity of infestation was highest in August and September. Contracaecum spiculigerum showed no distinct seasonal changes in incidence or intensity. Glochidial infestation reached a high intensity in July. This was due to the glochidia of Lampisilis radiata siliquoidea.

Nutrient accumulation in aboveground biomass and mobilization of nutrients in litter were studied on a Carex meadow in southern Quebec, Canada. Seasonal changes were characterized by short periods of rapid element uptake and release. By late May the total element levels were 80% of maximum. Accumulation of N, P, and K was rapid relative to early increments in biomass. Ca, Mg, and micronutrients were taken up from the soil solution across the season and levels paralleled changes in biomass. In early summer elements were released from litter more rapidly than litter dry weight declined. Mobility of elements decreased in the order K > Mg > P > N > Ca. Overwinter, 83% of K was released, whereas Ca concentration in litter increased overwinter and through the following summer. Immobilization of Fe in litter was pronounced. Overall, > 90% of the element mass in green late-summer shoots was retained in litter overwinter.
