Abstract – The present article proposes to reflect on the family category in face of societal transformations, with a view to emphasizing the need to overcome the family’s self-image arising from the experience of a univocal family model. Consequently, it indicates the need to understand the most diverse ways of living in family in contemporary society, as pointed by scholars of the family category, mainly to social workers that attend and intervene daily in the life of Brazilian families. This discussion is necessary, mainly for the direction of social policies of social protection that, since the years of 1980, have been transfering to families the responsibilities and functions of social protection which historically are beyond the scope of the family group. This article’s construction and theoretical reflection starts from the process of bibliographical research for a doctoral thesis that focused on family and social protection. Keywords: families; social protection; social policy.

This article examines the essence of the socio-psychological approach to understanding conflicts. The chronology of the development of social conflictology is objectively presented and restored in full, taking into account the contribution of those researchers who actually stood at its origins. The subject of the theory of social conflictology includes the patterns of conflict occurrence and manifestation. It analyzes the difficulties that occur in defining the concept, structure, dynamics and classification of social conflicts. Social conflictology is developing intensively: general theoretical prerequisites and foundations for creating a coherent theory have been created. It contributes to the development of optimal social policies and the professional training of social workers.

Probation officers, like generic social workers, have been and continue to be implementers rather than generators of social policies. Yet, probation officers have an important role to play in transforming the child justice system as they are central to the administration of child justice. This article argues that the Child Justice Bill (B49 of 2002) needs to be aligned with other pieces of legislation and policies that reflect a developmental approach and response to crime. The developmental approach will not only maximise the opportunities for meaningful interventions that could translate into prevention of crime and recidivism among young offenders, but will also have long-term benefits for the young offenders, their victims and society in general.

Background Speech-language pathologists make clinical decisions informed by evidence-based theory and “beliefs, values and emotional experiences” ( Hinckley, 2005 , p. 265). These subjective processes, while not extensively studied, underlie the workings of the therapeutic relationship and contribute to treatment outcomes. While speech-language pathologists do not routinely pay attention to subjective experiences of the therapeutic encounter, social workers do. Thus, the field of social work makes an invaluable contribution to the knowledge and skills of speech-language pathologists. Purpose This clinical focus article focuses on the clinician's contribution to the therapeutic relationship by surfacing elements of the underlying subjective processes. Method Vignettes were gathered from clinicians in two community aphasia programs informed by the principles of the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia. Results and Discussion By reflecting on and sharing aspects of clinical encounters, clinicians reveal subjective processing occurring beneath the surface. The vignettes shed light on the following clinical behaviors: listening to the client's “whole self,” having considerations around self-disclosure, dealing with biases, recognizing and surfacing clients' identities, and fostering hope. Speech-language pathologists are given little instruction on the importance of the therapeutic relationship, how to conceptualize this relationship, and how to balance this relationship with professionalism. Interprofessional collaboration with social workers provides a rich opportunity to learn ways to form and utilize the benefits of a strong therapeutic relationship while maintaining high standards of ethical behavior. Conclusion This clinical focus article provides speech-language pathologists with the “nuts and bolts” for considering elements of the therapeutic relationship. This is an area that is gaining traction in the field of speech-language pathology and warrants further investigation.

Two studies examined the impact of macrolevel symbolic threat on intergroup attitudes. In Study 1 (N = 71), participants exposed to a macrosymbolic threat (vs. nonsymbolic threat and neutral topic) reported less support toward social policies concerning gay men, an outgroup whose stereotypes implies a threat to values, but not toward welfare recipients, a social group whose stereotypes do not imply a threat to values. Study 2 (N = 78) showed that, whereas macrolevel symbolic threat led to less favorable attitudes toward gay men, macroeconomic threat led to less favorable attitudes toward Asians, an outgroup whose stereotypes imply an economic threat. These findings are discussed in terms of their implications for understanding the role of a general climate of threat in shaping intergroup attitudes.
