Interfirm cooperation can be seen as a significant and effective way for exploring radical innovation. In this article, a framework of interfirm cooperation, with a core manufacture and upstream counterparties in industry, and its evolving mechanism in the reverse-chain radical innovation are established from the perspective of the fundamental role played by knowledge collaboration. Then, an evolution model of interfirm cooperation is constructed on the theory of vibration mechanics, and its evolutionary dynamics is explored through numerical and simulation analysis mainly on the key factors of knowledge potential difference and knowledge rent-seeking behaviour within the firms. The findings show that, if there is no knowledge-based rent-seeking behaviour from the upstream firms, the probable innovative performance from the interfirm cooperation should vary for the knowledge potential difference between the cooperative firms, but can come to a certain equilibrium state. Meanwhile, if the knowledge rent-seeking behaviour does exist, knowledge potential difference would lead the innovative performance evolving ultimately in divergence. What’s more, the negative effect caused by the rent-seeking behaviour could be alleviated or weakened to some extent by the excitation mechanisms presented by the core firms in the cooperation system. Therefore, the drawn conclusions should be useful for the core manufactures’ implementing various strategies to maintain or enhance the cooperation for radical innovation in industry.

Purpose. The purpose of the study is to analyse the development trends of Ukrainian industry and identify ways to solve existing problems based on the intensification of innovation processes. Methodology of research. During the research methods generally accepted in economic science were applied, in particular: statistical and graphic – for definition of Ukrainian industry development tendencies; comparative analysis – to compare the Ukrainian industry and the world; system generalization – in substantiating the directions of industry innovative development intensification. Findings. The current trends in the development of industrial production in Ukraine, which are characterized by falling production volumes and negative changes in the structure of the industry, are revealed. The reduction of industrial production is revealed, which occurs mainly due to the curtailment of the processing industry enterprises activity. Negative changes in the structure of the industry are revealed, among which the increase in the share of low-tech productions with a significant decrease in medium-tech and moderate –high-tech ones are highlighted. Based on the correlation between industrial production indicators and GDP dynamics, it is proved that industry forms the foundation of the country`s social and economic development. It was found that the Ukrainian economy lags far behind the development of the world`s leading countries in terms of its material, resource, and energy intensity. The article proves that the issue of industrial development based on the intensification of innovation processes in Ukraine needs radical changes in reforming the management mechanisms of innovation processes and relations between science, society, business, and government to intensify investment activities support the technological development of industry, the introduction of environmentally friendly production. Originality. The analysis of the state of Ukraine`s industry and substantiation of the need for its innovative development was further developed, in the context of which measures were proposed to intensify innovation processes, which, in addition to existing ones, provide for the formation of a managing mechanism for innovative industrial development; coordination of industrial sector development policy with the goals of sustainable and inclusive development; introduction of environmentally friendly industrial production; expansion of cross-border economic and environmental cooperation; development of the strategy of development of the industry of Ukraine taking into account the European experience. Practical value. The results of the study are the basis for solving practical problems of improving the situation and the transition to innovative industrial development in Ukraine. Key words: industry of Ukraine, processing industry, structure of industrial production, industry innovative development.

Processes involved in the production of knowledge have long been exiled to the interiors of extra-urban science parks. In recent times, the emergence of a new conception of knowledge as an open resource and of innovation as a non-linear and iterative process has stimulated a rethink of urban space as an alternative environment to the standard ‘islands of innovation'. The planning challenges that this involves for urban space result from the need to open up innovation processes to broader layers of urban society, while at the same time maintaining the operational closed nature of science parks. This paper examines the spatial structure that emerged from the meeting of the needs of a city - Barcelona - to attract high-tech innovative companies with the major urban regeneration project 22@ Bcn, discussed here as an attempt to create an new generation district for innovation.

Academic literature has emphasized how firms in regional clusters exploit both place-specific local resources as well as external, world-class knowledge respectively to strengthen their competitiveness expanding the influence of regional systems of innovation. Innovation based in more complex technologies tends to be based in more open systems utilising the clusters external networks. However, in general, cluster literature has associated clusters with incremental innovation. This chapter analyses the determinants of radical innovation development in traditional (low and medium tech) clusters caused by high-tech located industries. It analyses the case of the development of breakthrough innovation and its diffusion in the tile ceramic Spanish cluster. It examines how market demands, customer orientation, technology diffusion from other industries, and industry competitiveness, as well as cluster internal and external networking facilitate the development of a complex technology within a common set of social capital, shared cognitive schemes, and understandings.

The level of innovation activity has not changed for a large number of years, despite the measures taken by the state. Based on empirical data, the article examines the dynamics of the following components of companies’ innovative activity in high-tech and low-tech sectors of the manufacturing industry: introduction of product and other types of innovations; activities to improve the qualifications of personnel; purchase of licensed foreign technologies and intangible assets. We also tested the statistical significance of differences in the levels of innovation activity of high-tech and low-tech companies in different economic conditions using the t-criterion. The analysis showed a decrease in the share of companies engaged in any kind of innovative activity. During the period of economic growth, both high-tech and low-tech companies made equal use of opportunities to increase innovation activity. It was found that the level of innovation activity among high-tech companies declines to a lesser extent than among low-tech companies during the crisis. In these conditions, high-tech companies are more actively using "internal reserves": they are working more to improve the skill level of staff and implementing innovation processes. During periods of high and low rates of economic growth, high-tech companies often buy new technology, but it does not lead to greater innovation activity; companies are only updating their technological base. During the period of weak economic growth, companies in both sectors continued to reduce their innovative activity in all areas. The resumption of growth trends in innovative activities is possible only when companies see the prospects from the implementation of innovative activities.

The increased attention to the theoretical issues of activation of innovation processes in the industrial sector is caused by various factors of influence, and primarily by the elimination of the technological gap between Russia and developed foreign industrial countries. To solve this problem, the author suggests focusing the priorities of innovation activity on the activation of high-tech industries. It is shown that domestic enterprises have come close to intensifying the search, development and implementation of the latest technologies, and activation of innovative activities. According to the author, the innovative activity of industrial enterprises primarily depends on the structure of production, enterprise management and organization of innovative activities.
