High temperature synthesis of nickel aluminide alloys with tungsten carbide

Catalytic systems based on tungsten carbide (WnC) containing mainly W2C were obtained by the method of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis from a mechanochemically activated mixture of tungsten oxide, metallic magnesium, carbon black and CaCO3. The phase composition of the formed materials was shown to depend on the amount of CaCO3. The catalytic properties of the materials were tested in the hydrolysis-hydrogenation of cellulose to ethylene glycol (EG) and 1,2-propylene glycol (PG). It was established that in the presence of WnC the main products of the reaction were EG and PG with a ratio of PG/EG – 1.5-1.8. The deposition of nickel nanoparticles on the WnC surface increased the reaction rate and product yields. The maximum total yield of diols was 47.1 mol. %.

ABSTRACTMonolithic Ni 3Al and composite Ni3Al/ceramic whisker bodies were fabricated by combined Self Propagating High Temperature Synthesis and in situ containerless Hot Isostatic Pressing (SHS/HIP), starting from cold pressed blends of nickel, aluminum, and boron powders, with and without additions of alumina whiskers. The resultant bodies were dense and had good ductility and mechanical strength at room temperature.

The paper presents the research results on the production of doped composite materials by the method of out-of-furnace liquid-phase self-propagating high-temperature synthesis using oxides and mineral concentrates containing Zr and W as a charge. The positive experience of producing ingots of intermetallic alloys based on the Ni-Al system in one stage of the reduction process of joint metallothermy is shown. The use of Zr in the charge leads to grinding of microstructure of the ingots and the formation of intermetallic compounds containing Zr. The additional use of C, B2O3, and W in the charge results in the formation of complex borides and tungsten carbides in the ingots. Additional introduction of Cr2O3 into the charge is necessary for the formation of W carbides in the nickel aluminide matrix.
