Given the theological anthropology and ecclesiological charge of Gaudium et spes, living out its call demands Christians appreciate that “Nothing that is genuinely human fails to find an echo in our hearts,” indeed sometimes a thorn in our hearts. This essay outlines some of the key themes and legacies of Gaudium et spes in light of this focus and then returns to several elements of its “echo” in areas of dialogue, conscience, and resonance for the church today.

Gaudium et Spes is a revolutionary document of Vatican II which can still inspire the Church now and in the future. This document is revolutionary in the sense that it deals with problems, issues and ideas that had never before become the agenda of any Council in the Catholic Church. Gaudium et Spes concretizes what John XXIII named aggiornamento, a process of contextualising the Christian heritage, through which the Church opens itself up to the modern world. This document is also revolutionary because it is entirely a product of the conciliar process of the Council itself. This article presents the process of drafting the document and discusses some issues that are relevant for the Church today and in the future. <b>Kata-kata kunci:</b> proses, Gereja, dunia modern, solidaritas, keadilan ekonomi, martabat manusia, perdamaian.

Present-day magisterial Roman Catholicism offers an interesting perspective on personhood. Recent interest in personhood has been fostered by Vatican II (1962-1965), especially the ‘Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World’ (Gaudium et spes) and the ‘Declaration on Religious Freedom’ (Dignitatis humanae). The anthropological thrust of Vatican II is particularly referred to the dignity of the human person, her mystery, and vocation. In all these aspects of personhood, the Church plays a fundamental role. In fact, the (Roman) Church is seen as safeguarding the dignity of the person , shedding light on the mystery of the person, and is the place where the person can fully accomplish his vocation. While the focus seems to be on the person, the Church is always in the background.

The First Pastoral Consultation of the Diocese of Surabaya held on November 26th-28th 2009 proposed The Basic Direction of the Diocese of Surabaya 2010-2019, which is stating the desire of the Church of the Diocese of Surabaya to be“a communion of Christ’s disciples, which is more and more maturing in faith, convivial, full of service and missionary”. The Second Pastoral Consultation held on October 18th-20th 2019, keeping this purpose statement for the next 10 years inThe Basic Direction of the Diocese of Surabaya 2020-2030, thus confirms the significancy of an “Ecclesiology of Discipleship” for the formation of the people of the Diocese. This paper wants to propose a study regarding this ecclesiology based on the document of the Second Vatican Council, i.e. The Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes, art. 1. Being a Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the modern world, Gaudium et Spes, opened with a statement regarding the unity of the followers of Christ and the men of this age, would be fundamentally authoritative and enlightening for reflecting the vocation of the local Church of Surabaya as “a communion of the disciples of Christ” to become aware of her mission for the world (ad extradimension), while she is, as a communion of the faith (ad intra dimension), journeyingtowards eternal unity with the God

At the heart of ecclesial mission, and thus of theology, is a diligent reading, discernment, and elevation of the signs of the times in the light of Jesus Christ. Such was the imperative of the Second Vatican Council’s Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, Gaudium et spes, that has today been freshly received in the papacy of Francis. Precisely in order to attentively listen to those yearnings of the world, the word of the Council and arguably of Francis’s entire pontificate has been dialogue. Meanwhile, alongside excitement and hope, confusion and controversy continues to surround the legacy of the Council and the assessment of Pope Francis. The most recent Synod on the Family has demonstrated as much. This paper suggests that one of the issues-under-the-issues is the precise meaning of “dialogue,” an ambiguity that can be traced back to Gaudium et spes itself. After considering the positions of Joseph Ratzinger and Edward Schillebeeckx vis-à-vis Gaudium et spes, this paper suggests that, in actuality, two conceptions of dialogue are present in the church’s pastoral constitution. This conciliar ambiguity regarding the precise meaning of dialogue between church and world—whether a bold one-sided kerygmatic proclamation of the Gospel sine glossa or a more reciprocal two-sided mutual learning—is undoubtedly one source of confusion in any discussion of ecclesial mission today and thus merits our further attention. This paper briefly proposes that three fundamental theological questions offer some aid to resolve this key tension in Gaudium et spes: the role of eschatology in the church’s life; the relationship of nature and grace; and where, what, and who the church is. To continue to receive the Council’s teaching on dialogue is essential—the church’s missionary mandate from Christ depends on it.

Analysing the whole process of the development of the doctrine of redemptionin Gaudium et Spes, we can conclude that the Council responded to thedemands expressed before the beginning of the doctrine. It remained faithfulto the teachings of St omas Aquinas, while preserving the essential contentof his doctrine, although it expressed it in a new language. e Council was ableto positively explain the doctrine of the mystery of redemption, without arguingwith various contemporary theological tendencies. Redemption is shown asthe work of Jesus Christ through His salvific Incarnation and the redemptivepaschal mystery of death, resurrection, ascension and exile of the Holy Spirit.Redemption freed man from the bondage of Satan and sin, became a new covenantwith the Father, reconciled delusions with God and with himself, meritedlife and revealed the mystery of love. Redemption is a great event in the historyof salvation, which begins with the work of Creation. From the history of thevarious editions of Gaudium et Spes, from the interventions of the Council Fathersand from the solutions to the theological problems relating to the wholereality of the modern world, we can conclude that the Pastoral Constitutionon the Church points to the relationship between creation and redemption, speaking of creation in the perspective of redemption and defining redemptionas the renewal of creation in Christ.
