Query Sense Discovery Approach to Realize the User's Search Intent

The main goal of information retrieval is getting the most relevant documents to a user’s query. So, a search engine must not only understand the meaning of each keyword in the query but also their relative senses in the context of the query. Discovering the query meaning is a comprehensive and evolutionary process; the precise meaning of the query is established as developing the association between concepts. The meaning determination process is modeled by a dynamic system operating in the semantic space of WordNet. To capture the meaning of a user query, the original query is reformulating into candidate queries by combining the concepts and their synonyms. A semantic score characterizing the overall meaning of such queries is calculated, the one with the highest score was used to perform the search. The results confirm that the proposed "Query Sense Discovery" approach provides a significant improvement in several performance measures.

LoG and Structural Based Arbitrary Oriented Multilingual Text Detection in Images/Video

Text in an image or a video affords more precise meaning and text is a prominent source with a clear explanation of the content than any other high-level or low-level features. The text detection process is a still challenging research work in the field of computer vision. However, complex background and orientation of the text leads to extremely stimulating text detection tasks. Multilingual text consists of different geometrical shapes than a single language. In this article, a simple and yet effective approach is presented to detect the text from an arbitrary oriented multilingual image and video. The proposed method employs the Laplacian of Gaussian to identify the potential text information. The double line structure analysis is applied to extract the true text candidates. The proposed method is evaluated on five datasets: Hua's, arbitrarily oriented, multi-script robust reading competition (MRRC), MSRA and video datasets with performance measures precision, recall and f-measure. The proposed method is also tested on real-time video, and the result is promising and encouraging.

K-EPIC: Entity-Perceived Context Representation in Korean Relation Extraction

Relation Extraction (RE) aims to predict the correct relation between two entities from the given sentence. To obtain the proper relation in Relation Extraction (RE), it is significant to comprehend the precise meaning of the two entities as well as the context of the sentence. In contrast to the RE research in English, Korean-based RE studies focusing on the entities and preserving Korean linguistic properties rarely exist. Therefore, we propose K-EPIC (Entity-Perceived Context representation in Korean) to ensure enhanced capability for understanding the meaning of entities along with considering linguistic characteristics in Korean. We present the experimental results on the BERT-Ko-RE and KLUE-RE datasets with four different types of K-EPIC methods, utilizing entity position tokens. To compare the ability of understanding entities and context of Korean pre-trained language models, we analyze HanBERT, KLUE-BERT, KoBERT, KorBERT, KoELECTRA, and multilingual-BERT (mBERT). The experimental results demonstrate that the F1 score increases significantly with our K-EPIC and that the performance of the language models trained with the Korean corpus outperforms the baseline.

Personality and territoriality in theory and in Belgium

Language policy debates regularly refer to the principles of personality and territoriality. Yet the precise meaning of these principles remains unclear. In this contribution, I conceptualize these principles as poles of a continuum between official bilingualism (instantiating the personality principle) and official unilingualism (exemplifying the territoriality principle), with a mixed regime in between (which grants a certain territorial primacy to a language, but allows exceptions based on linguistic affiliation). The question of the determination of particular points on the continuum cannot be separated from the metaterritorial question of the boundaries of the units within which those principles apply. Application of this ‘continuum model’ to Belgium draws attention to three language-political regimes. The first invokes a strict personality principle (Brussels). The second follows the strict territoriality principle (almost all municipalities in Flanders and Wallonia). The third is a mixed regime (a total of 27 ‘municipalities with facilities’ where one language enjoys primacy but speakers of another language enjoy certain linguistic ‘facilities’). The article also analyses the manner in which these regimes were historically established in Belgium in combination with a delineation of the language border and the division of the country into four language areas.

Squeezing Italian dictionaries in search of citrus juice and fruit

Southern Mediterranean regions significantly differ from the northern countries not only for their climate, but also and foremost for the influence that the latter has on the landscape and the products that are related to it. Dictionaries should relate the lexical variation used to describe the variety of landscapes and their characteristics, thus reflecting the peculiarities of a given territory. This paper deals with the variety of citrus fruits that can be found in the Italian landscapes, with particular attention to the lexicographic treatment that they receive in both monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, where a precise meaning is not always registered and the treatment of the superordinate agrume (pl. agrumi) is controversial: its taxonomic status seems not to be recognized and fully exploited in dictionary articles.

Applying mechanical philosophy to web science: The case of social machines

Social machines are a prominent focus of attention for those who work in the field of Web and Internet science. Although a number of online systems have been described as social machines (examples include the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, Reddit, and Galaxy Zoo), there is, as yet, little consensus as to the precise meaning of the term “social machine.” This presents a problem for the scientific study of social machines, especially when it comes to the provision of a theoretical framework that directs, informs, and explicates the scientific and engineering activities of the social machine community. The present paper outlines an approach to understanding social machines that draws on recent work in the philosophy of science, especially work in so-called mechanical philosophy. This is what might be called a mechanistic view of social machines. According to this view, social machines are systems whose phenomena (i.e., events, states, and processes) are explained via an appeal to (online) socio-technical mechanisms. We show how this account is able to accommodate a number of existing attempts to define the social machine concept, thereby yielding an important opportunity for theoretical integration.

Defining rehabilitation: An exploration of why it is attempted, and why it will always fail

The problem: Over 187 definitions of rehabilitation exist, none widely agreed or used. Why? The word: Words represent a core concept, with a penumbra of associated meanings. A word means what is agreed among those who use it. The precise meaning will vary between different groups. Words evolve, the meaning changing with use. Other words may capture some of the concepts or meanings. A definition: A definition is used to control the unstable, nebulous meaning of a word. It delineates, creating a boundary. A non-binary spectrum of meaning is transformed into binary categories: rehabilitation, or not rehabilitation. In clinical terms, it is a diagnostic test to identify rehabilitation. There are many different reasons for categorising something as rehabilitation. Each will need its own definition. Categorisation: The ability of a definition to distinguish cases accurately must be validated by comparison with ‘the truth’. If there were an external ‘true’ test to identify rehabilitation, a definition would not be needed. As with most concepts, the only truth is agreement by people familiar with the required distinction. Any definition will generate misclassification. People familiar with the required distinction will also need to resolve mis-categorisation. Description: An alternative is a ‘descriptive definition’, listing features over several domains which must be present. This fails logically. Rehabilitation is an emergent concept, more than the sum of its parts. Conclusion: A useful definition cannot be achieved because no definition will cover all needs, and a specific definition for a purpose will misclassify some cases.

Collective Religious Freedom as Associational Action: How Sociological Concepts Can Help Make Sense of the Jurisprudence

Religious freedom is protected by section 2(a) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Historically, the right has been understood in individual terms, though the courts have acknowledged a collective dimension to religion as expressed in a community of believers. Yet, the precise meaning of collective religious freedom has not been fully fleshed out. The current case law only encompasses a limited range of forms of collective religious expression and does not articulate a coherent theory as to why some collective 2(a) claims succeed while others fail. This paper draws on concepts from interpretive sociology to help clarify the existing jurisprudence and reveal a tension that is otherwise invisible over the status of volition/voluntariness in the collective religious freedom framework. Addressing this tension can help rationalize the Court’s jurisprudence and give resources to critics looking to change how the law encompasses collective religious experience.

Part I International Refugee Law— Reflections on the Scholarly Field, Ch.3 A Feminist Appraisal of International Refugee Law

This chapter appraises the gendering of refugee law, examining both feminist scholarship on cases involving persecution of people for their non-conformity to stereotypical gender roles and wider questions related to refugee experiences. While there is an evident link between gender and sexual orientation/gender identity, it primarily focuses on the experiences of women. Due in large part to feminist advocacy and scholarship, the Refugee Convention now reflects gender concerns. However, the precise meaning and content of gender is arguably less understood, and the full implications of a gendered approach have not been implemented. Tracking both normative movement and physical/geographical movement of refugees, the chapter evaluates scholarship, policy, and law to assess whether refugee law has continued to interrogate and update its understanding of ‘gender’.
