The main purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that discouraged Taiwan hoteliers from applying for green hotel certification. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method was used to perform a weighted analysis that comprehensively identified important hindering factors based on information from hotel industry, government, academic, and consumer representatives. Overall, in order of importance, the five dimensions of hindering factors identified by these experts and scholars were hotel internal environment, consumers’ environmental protection awareness, environmental protection incentive policy, hotel laws and regulations policy, and hotel external environment. Among the 26 examined hindering factor indices, the three highest-weighted indices overall for hoteliers applying for green hotel certification were as follows: environmental protection is not the main consideration of consumers seeking accommodations, lack of support by investment owners (shareholders), and lack of relevant subsidy incentives. The major contribution of this study is that hoteliers can understand important hindering factors associated with applying for green hotel certification; therefore, strategies that can encourage or enhance the green certification of hotels can be proposed to improve corporate image in the hotel industry, implement social responsibility in this industry, and obtain consumers’ approval of and accommodation-willingness for green hotels.

Beyond being a shelter, houses are such structures which obtain meanings shaped by the influence of culture, particularly reflecting the society’s socio-cultural structure. As a time-khronos and space-topos pattern, the houses reflect the characteristics of the culture or ethnic group which they are part of, while on the other hand, they reflect the images of the individual’s essence as a communicative action. The effect of climate and typology, which are physical components of culture, as well as social components of culture, such as value systems, belief, lifestyle and habits, are cardinal factors in the formation of traditional houses. In this respect, traditional structures are visual representation spaces that narrates their own story, like verbal culture, and they convey their unique codes through visuality. This study, which discusses traditional architecture as a cultural text, aims to reveal traditional Urfa houses through analytical readings, within the context of visual semiology.. The samples selected within the scope of the study will be evaluated according to the context of stylistic features they are part of, such as plan and spatial perspective, the location of the houses, and detections regarding the visual culture will be discussed through the cultural and architectural design approach of Umberto Eco.

PurposeThe aim of this paper is to explore the relationship between vernacular architecture and Frei Otto's work, searching for shared principles and specific singularities, and testing whether lightness and sustainability can be identified as a common goal.Design/methodology/approachThe study is focused on tents and yurts, as archetypal examples of traditional architecture, and membrane structures and gridshells, as two types of light structures developed by Frei Otto. A comparative analysis of their behavior, form, elements, types, materials and strength has been carried out.FindingsThe survey carried out shows that Frei Otto's innovative tents and gridshells were not based on form imitation of vernacular architecture, but rather on a thorough understanding of physical form-generating processes, driving specific materials to optimal form, like his experiments with soap film models to generate tensioned minimal surfaces or his experiments with hanging chain net models to generate compressive antifunicular lattice shells.Originality/valueThis paper highlights how Frei Otto's endeavor to get the maximum with the minimum, to achieve a lot from a little, is also a key target of lightness and sustainability, and an essential feature of vernacular architecture.

Insight Journal Vol. 7 DOI: 10.24191/ij.v7i1.58 This research study is endeavoured to discover the factors that will lead the consumers’ staying intention at green hotels, especially of those who practise the Shariah Law (Islamic green hotels). Nowadays, there has been an increase in public concern regarding environmental issues. Consumers are more environmentally aware than they were in past decades. Hotels are among the largest contributors of energy consumers in the tertiary building sector, which contribute to some negative impacts to the earth at the same time. The most obvious negative impact of hotels on environment are solid waste generation and disposal. Therefore, numerous consumers are supportive of green consumption and consider it as a successful method to protect the environment. In Islamic green hotels, Muslim-friendly amenities have also been provided to protect Muslims travellers’ welfare that is by providing them a comfortable prayer room, the Holy Quran and Islamic practices booklets, prayer mats and a direction of Qibla. A set of questionnaires was distributed to 256 respondents among the community and tourists in Kuching, Sarawak. The dependent variable in this study was consumers’ staying intention while the independent variables were green image, green satisfaction, Muslim amenities and lifestyle and price fairness. This research study also made use of the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software to analyse the result based on the questionnaires distributed to the respondents. Based on the result of analysis, it is shown that the green image and green satisfaction were found of having a positive significant that influence the consumers’ staying intention at the Islamic green hotels. Besides that, Muslim amenities and lifestyle was also found to have a positive significant impact that influences the consumers’ staying intention. Most Muslims were likely to choose a destination with Islamic practice to fulfil their daily duties. However, green price fairness did not significantly influence the consumers’ staying intention. This is because if green image, green satisfaction, Muslim amenities, and lifestyle meet the requirements of the Muslim tourists, they would not be affected by the price. As a matter of fact, price may be the least factor of consideration by the tourists in choosing a hotel to stay.
