Three dimensional steady state mixed convection in a lid driven cubical cavity heating from below has been investigated numerically. Two sided walls are maintained at a constant ambient temperature Ttop > Tbottom, while the vertical walls are thermally insulated. Governing equations expressing in a dimensionless form are solved by using finite element method. The Reynolds number is fixed at Re=100, while the Richardson number is varied from 0.001 to 10. Parametric studies focusing on the effect of the Richardson number on the fluid flow and heat transfer have been performed. The flow and heat transfer characteristics, expressed in terms of streamlines, isotherms and average wall Nusselt number are presented for the entire range of Richardson number considered. Multiple correlations in terms of the heat transfer rate and Richardson number has been established.

Purpose The main purpose of this work is to arrive at a three-dimensional (3D) numerical solution on mixed convection in a cubic cavity with a longitudinally located triangular fin in different sides. Design/methodology/approach The 3D governing equations are solved via finite volume technique by writing a code in FORTRAN platform. The governing parameters are chosen as Richardson number, 0.01 ≤ Ri ≤ 10 and thermal conductivity ratio 0.01 ≤ Rc ≤ 100 for fixed parameters of Pr = 0.7 and Re = 100. Two cases are considered for a lid-driven wall from left to right (V+) and right to left (V−). Findings It is observed that entropy generation due to heat transfer becomes dominant onto entropy generation because of fluid friction. The most important parameter is the direction of the moving lid, and lower values are obtained when the lid moves from right to left. Originality The main originality of this work is to arrive at a solution of a 3D problem of mixed convection and entropy generation for lid-driven cavity with conductive triangular fin attachments.

Mixed convection flow and heat transfer characteristics in a lid-driven cavity with two isothermally heated circular cylinders inside are studied numerically using a finite element formulation based on the Galerkin method of weighted residuals. The top lid of the cavity is moving rightwards with a constant speed. The two cylinders are maintained at an isothermal hot temperature, while the walls of the cavity are maintained at a cold temperature. Comparisons of streamlines, isotherms and average Nusselt number are presented to show the impact of the Richardson number, non-dimensional radius of the cylinder, and the location of the cylinders on the transport phenomena within the cavity. The results of this investigation show that the presence of the cylinders results in an increase in the average Nusselt number compared with a case with no cylinder. The average Nusselt number increases with an increase in the Richardson number for all non-dimensional radius of the cylinder studied in this work. It is seen that changing the boundary condition on one of the cylinders from isothermal to adiabatic has minimal effect on the average Nusselt number around the walls of the cavity.

In the present work, laminar mixed convection of a Newtonian fluid around a hot obstacle in a square cavity with moving vertical walls is studied numerically. The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of the Richardson number (0 ≼ Ri ≼ 10) and Reynolds number (50 ≼ Re ≼ 500) on both hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics around a hot obstacle in the enclosure. The analysis of the obtained results shows that the heat transfer is enhanced for high values of Richardson and Reynolds numbers.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the mixed convection of a two-phase water–aluminum oxide nanofluid in a cavity under a uniform magnetic field. Design/methodology/approach The upper wall of the cavity is cold and the lower wall is warm. The effects of different values of Richardson number, Hartmann number, cavitation length and solid nanoparticles concentration on the flow and temperature field and heat transfer rate were evaluated. In this paper, the heat flux was assumed to be constant of 10 (W/m2) and the Reynolds number was assumed to be constant of 300 and the Hartmann number and the volume fraction of solid nanoparticles varied from 0 to 60 and 0 to 0.06, respectively. The Richardson number was considered to be 0.1, 1 and 5. Aspect ratios were 1, 1.5 and 2. Findings Comparison of the results of this paper with the results of the numerical and experimental studies of other researchers showed a good correlation. The results were presented in the form of velocity and temperature profiles, stream and isotherm lines and Nusselt numbers. The results showed that by increasing the Hartmann number, the heat transfer rate decreases. An increase from 0 to 20 in Hartmann number results in a 20 per cent decrease in Nusselt numbers, and by increasing the Hartmann number from 20 to 40, a 16 per cent decrease is observed in Nusselt number. Accordingly, it is inferred that by increasing the Hartmann number, the reduction in the Nusselt number is decreased. As the Richardson number increased, the heat transfer rate and, consequently, the Nusselt number increased. Therefore, an increase in the Richardson number results in an increase of the Nusselt number, that is, an increase in Richardson number from 0.1 to 1 and from 1 to 5 results in 37 and 47 per cent increase in Nusselt number, respectively. Originality/value Even though there have been numerous investigations conducted on convection in cavities under various configurations and boundary conditions, relatively few studies are conducted for the case of nanofluid mixed convection in square lid-driven cavity under the effect of magnetic field using two-phase model.

Purpose This paper aims to probe the problem of an unsteady mixed convection stagnation point flow and heat transfer past a stationary surface in an incompressible viscous fluid numerically. Design/methodology/approach The governing nonlinear partial differential equations are transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations by a similarity transformation, which is then solved numerically by a Runge – Kutta – Fehlberg method with shooting technique and a collocation method, namely, the bvp4c function. Findings The effects of the governing parameters on the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics are illustrated in tables and figures. It is found that dual (upper and lower branch) solutions exist for both the cases of assisting and opposing flow situations. A stability analysis has also been conducted to determine the physical meaning and stability of the dual solutions. Practical implications This theoretical study is significantly relevant to the applications of the heat exchangers placed in a low-velocity environment and electronic devices cooled by fans. Originality/value The case of suction on unsteady mixed convection flow at a three-dimensional stagnation point has not been studied before; hence, all generated numerical results are claimed to be novel.

In this study, nanofluid flow and heat transfer in a cavity with two moving lids are investigated. Governing equations are solved by finite volume approach using SIMPLE algorithm over a staggered gird system. The results show that when the moving lids have opposing effect, the streamlines contain two main vortices. By increasing the Richardson number, intensity of the vortex complying with buoyancy force increases, while intensity of the other vortex decreases. When the moving lids have aiding effect, the streamlines contain one the primary dominant vortex in which its strength increases with increase of the buoyancy force. In this case, rate of heat transfer is more than other cases.

Laminar mixed convection in a three-dimensional lid driven cavity is numerically investigated. The top lid of the cavity is moving rightwards with a constant speed at a cold temperature. The bottom wall is maintained at an isothermal hot temperature, while the other vertical walls of the cavity are assumed to be insulated. In this study the mass diffusion was not taken into account and the fluid used was air. The flow and heat transfer behavior is studied for various Richardson number ranging from 5 × 10−5 to 3 × 10−4 at a fixed Prandtl number of 0.71 through analyzing the local Nusselt number distribution at different sections inside the cavity. Lewis number Le is assumed to be unity and the buoyancy ratio parameter N is equal to zero. Computations were done using an in-house code based on a finite volume method. The results showed a good agreement with previous two dimensional studies, while the three dimensional study gives different results at different sections inside the cavity. It is observed that, the average Nusselt number “Av Nu” on top and bottom surfaces decreases for all sections inside the cavity with increasing Richardson number. A correlation was formulated for each section on both walls for “Av Nu” as a function of “Ri” with a maximum error of 7.3%.

An incompressible viscous fluid flow with heat transfer over a spherical object inside a pipe is considered. The flow is made three-dimensional by an eccentric positioning of the sphere inside the pipe. The governing equations are solved by a numerical method which uses a finite volume formulation in a generalized body fitted coordinate system. An overset (Chimera) grid scheme is used to resolve the two geometries of the pipe and sphere. The results are compared to those of an external flow over a sphere, and the code is validated using such results in the intermediate Reynolds number range. The blockage effects are analyzed through evaluation of lift, drag, and heat transfer rate over the sphere. Also the change in the shear stress pattern is examined through evaluation of the local friction factor on a pipe wall and sphere surface.

In this study, the mixed convective heat transfer in a lid-driven cavity was investigated numerically. The finite volume discritization method was used to solve the momentum and energy equations by using the classic Boussinesq incompressible approximation. The cavity vertical walls are insulated whereas the bottom (hot wall) and top (cold wall) surface are maintained at a uniform temperature and fins are located on bottom wall. The effect of fin numbers over the flow field and heat transfer was investigated at various Richardson numbers. Study was carried out for Richardson numbers ranging from 0.01 to 10, fin numbers between 1 and 7, fin height ratio change from 0.05 to 0.3, and thermal conductivity ratio (fin to fluid) from 10 to 104, respectively. The results are presented in the form of streamlines, temperature contours, and Nusselt number distributions. The results show that the Nusselt number increases when the number of fin and fin height decrease. In addition, in all cases an increasing Richardson number caused increasing the relative Nusselt number ( Nu / Nu0). The heat transfer enhancement was observed at low fin numbers (1 and 3) and high Richardson number in comparison with the cavity without fins.

The ribbed three-dimensional solar air heater (SAH) model is numerically investigated to estimate flow and heat transfer through it. The numerical analysis is based on finite volume approach, and the set of flow governing equations has been solved to determine the heat transfer and flow field through the SAH. For detailed analysis, rib chamfer height ratio (e′/e) and rib aspect ratio (e/w), two innovative parameters, have been created and considered along with the commonly used roughness parameter, i.e., relative roughness height, e/D. The parameters e′/e, e/w, and e/D are varied from 0.0 to 1, 0.1 to 1.5, and 0.18 to 0.043, respectively, but the value of P/e is kept constant for the entire investigation at 12. A good match is seen in Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f) by comparing the predicted results with the experimental ones. With the variation of roughness parameters, distinguishable change in Nu and f is obtained. The highest value of thermohydraulic performance parameter (TPP) observed is 2.08 for P/e, e′/e, e/w, and e/D values of 12, 0.75, 1.5, and 0.043, respectively, at Re of 17,100. The developed generalized equation for Nu and f has shown acceptable percentage deviation under the studied range of parameters.
