Background: The main aim of the study was to determine the efficacy of Sodium Feredetate with Ferrous Sulfate in treatment of iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women. Rise in hemoglobin after one and two months of treatment with respective drugs and their side effects. Methods: Prospective randomized study carried out between Jan 2008-July 2009 at Government Tertiary Care Level Hospital OBG Department in Mangalore on 74 pregnant women with anemia. Results: Sodium feredetate (Na Fe EDTA) in iron deficiency anemia led to a significant and rapid rise in hemoglobin levels than that with ferrous sulfate in our study. Conclusions: Sodium Feredetate in iron deficiency anemia led to a significant and rapid rise in hemoglobin levels than that with Ferrous Sulfate and also associated with minimal or no side effects.

Experience with a new oral iron-carbohydrate complex (Jefron) in the treatment of iron-deficiency anemia shows that the therapeutic results are inferior to those obtainable with ferrous sulfate. Many children showed no response after months of treatment with this drug and when subsequently placed on ferrous sulfate therapy showed a rapid rise in hemoglobin to normal levels. Preliminary studies suggest that poor gastrointestinal absorption may be a factor in the inadequate therapeutic effects.

Objective: To compare the efficacy of Ferrous sulfate with iron polymaltosecomplex in treatment of iron deficiency anemia in children in terms of rise in hemoglobin. Studydesign: Randomized clinical trial. Setting: Department of Paediatric Medicine Unit I AlliedHospital Faisalabad. Study duration: 6 months. Methodology: All the children of age group6 month to 12year with hemoglobin level <10g/dl, MCV<70fl corrected for age, MCHC<32%,serum ferritin<8μg/l were included. All other cases of anemia other than iron deficiency anemiasuch as thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, lead poisoning etc, patients with severe anemia(hb≤6g/dl) because they need blood transfusion to correct anemia, those with decompensatedheart failure or acute infection were excluded. After enrolment patients were randomly dividedinto two groups by lottery method. Group A, patients were given ferrous sulphate. Group B,patients were given iron polymaltose complex (IPC). Both iron preparations were given inthe dose of 5mg/kg/day of elemental iron in three divided dosage 30 minutes before meals.Patients were assessed at one month interval after the start of treatment and hemoglobin waschecked at follow up visit by taking 2cc blood. Results: Sixty children were studied. Meanage was 2.5 ± 5.1 years, range 7 months to 12 years with 32 girls, 28 boys. The patients wereevenly distributed between the two treatment groups (IPC, n = 30, 50%; ferrous sulfate, n =30, 50%). All erythrocyte-related hematologic parameters after one month treatment showed asignificant improvement from baseline with both treatments. A significant improvement in Hbwas observed after one month treatment in the IPC group 9.5 ± 1.1g/dL to 10.6 ±1.0 g/dL andthe ferrous sulfate group 9.4 ± 1.6 g/dL to 11.2 ± 0.9 g/dL which was statistically significant. Conclusion: From this randomized study, it is concluded that both ferrous sulphate and ironpolymaltose complex have equal efficacy in treatment of iron deficiency anemia

Purpose: To evaluate iron deficiency anemia and other concomitant risk factors among pregnant women in a tertiary care hospital in Sargodha District of Pakistan. Methods: An observational cross-sectional study on pregnant women over a six-month period from December 2016, was conducted in the gynaecology and obstetrics department of the District Headquarters Hospital, Sargodha, Pakistan. All women with renal failure, heart disease and surgical history were excluded from the study, while all pregnant women visiting the out-patient department (OPD) were included in the investigation. Blood sampling and analysis were performed, following standard laboratory operating procedures to determine the haemoglobin (Hb) levels of the patients. Results: Fifty pregnant women were enrolled in this study. They had a mean age of 27.85 ± 4.99 years with a range of 20 – 46 years. Almost half, i.e., 26 (52 %), were aged 20 – 30 years; 18 (36 %) 31 – 40 years and six (12 %) > 40 years of age. Regarding occupational status, 45 (90 %) of the respondents were housewives. In total, 86 % of the women were anemic, while the remaining 14 % were non-anemic and had an Hb level slightly > 11 g/dL. Among the anemic women, 13 (26 %) had mild anemia, 33 (66 %) moderate anemia, and 4 (8 %) were severely anemic. Conclusion: Iron deficiency and anemia have major health impacts on pregnant women. Steps should be taken during ante-natal care to monitor Hb levels in pregnant women and apply appropriate remedy where necessary. Other biomarkers and related risk factors such as total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and total blood count (TBC) have previously been found to be linked to anemia

The article provides the definition of iron deficiency anemia (IDA), discusses the mechanisms of influence of iron deficiency during pregnancy, as well as the main reasons for the development of IDA in the practice of an obstetrician-gynecologist, accompanied by a significant increase in the physiological need for iron. Methods for the correction and prevention of iron deficiency are described, and differences in the absorption of heme and non-heme iron are indicated. Also, this article reveals the advantages of prevention and dietary correction of iron deficiency states using a combination of heme iron and ferrous sulfate - Richter FerroBio.
