Most engineering outreach programs are a part of STEM outreach efforts and they often fail to bring engineering-specific interests. We present a unique engineering outreach effort with the focus on “engineering design” with the use of Arduino UNO board. Arduino UNO board was used to achieve the design oriented learning and bring creativity through various projects targeting 7–8th graders. In order to achieve the design oriented outreach goal, several strategies were employed. The program was called “Science Art’ to provide familiar concept of design and challenge them with technology. College engineering students directly mentored 7–8th graders in a small group setting to teach technical details. In addition, the efforts were sustained for an entire quarter. It successfully drew the participants in all diverse ethnic and gender groups. The use of Arduino board project allowed development of design concepts and promoted creativity to the middle school students. Student mentees’ feedback was very positive, showing almost perfect approval. At the same time, college mentors equally benefited from the experiences by increasing interpersonal skills and gaining technical confidence. In conclusion, the close mentorship and sustained effort provided a great way to implement the Arduino based program to a middle school and thus achieve the design oriented outreach goal. This approach can be widely used for other design oriented outreach program.

People's dependence on digital technology has increased rapidly since the global Covid-19 pandemic. This causes the world's need for digital products and human resources to make digital products higher. Informatics Engineering Program is one of the providers of human resources who are proficient in the field of information technology. One of the basic skills that must be possessed to create digital products is programming or coding skills. The more skilled a person is at typing and understanding coding, the more complex the digital products he can create. This is why the coding ability of students in the Informatics Engineering Program must be improved. This website-based coding training program aims to improve the coding skills of Informatics Engineering students with interesting and fun gamification methods. Gamification methodology will greatly benefit student of Informatics Engineering Program in Riau University to improve his or her coding skill without consuming too much time and energy.

Improving creativity in engineering design continues to be a challenge. The relationship between fixation and creativity within engineering is mixed, as engineers desire to be innovative, yet are usually working from their existing knowledge to redesign existing products. In the current study, we wanted to examine the influence of physical examples on originality and fixation at the freshmen and senior level in a Mechanical Engineering program. We compared concepts for garbage collection systems generated by two groups — one provided with an example product (Example group), and another who did not receive an example product (No Example group). Using metrics established in prior publications, we found that seniors had higher levels of originality than freshmen whether an example product was received or not, reinforcing our previous findings. Fixation scores were higher for the group that did have an example. Receiving an example product was not a predictor of originality on its own, but did interact with curriculum and fixation level. Within the group that received an example product, there was a negative relationship between fixation and originality, particularly for the seniors. Within the group that did not receive an example product, there was no significant relationship between fixation and originality. Further analysis of our results are required to delineate how not receiving an example product influences design approach in freshmen and senior engineering students.

A 2005–06 Multidisciplinary Senior Design team created a series of classroom activities designed to teach middle school students about engineering topics related to energy and the environment. This Traveling Engineering Activity Kit (TEAK) consists of five smaller kits, each based on a different energy-related theme: Heat Transfer, Electrical Energy, Wind and Water, Solar Power, and Chemical Energy. Each kit contains an Academic Activity to teach a background concept, a Hands-On Activity to allow students to apply the concepts learned, and a Take-Home Activity that can be done independently at home. The design team also developed instruction manuals suitable for non-engineers, lesson plans, handouts, and post-activity quizzes to assess participants’ learning. To date, the kits have been used by several hundred middle school students either in their classroom setting or while participating in on-campus outreach programs. This paper highlights the Heat Transfer TEAK including an overview of the intended learning outcomes; physical materials and set-ups included within the interactive kit; as well as details related to the development of the kit by a multi-disciplinary team of senior engineering students. Program and kit assessment progress is discussed based on feedback from design team members; middle school students and teachers. Future plans for refining current kits and expanding kit offerings are also discussed.
