A new cyclodorippid crab, Berglundus bretoni n. gen., n. sp. (Cyclodorippidae Ortmann, 1892) from the Astoria Formation (early to middle Miocene) of Washington State is herein described. It represents the fourth genus of cyclodorippids in North America, keeping the stratigraphic range and the palaeogeographic distribution of the Cyclodorippidae unchanged.

AbstractFor more than fifty years it has been known that mammalian faunas of late-Pleistocene age are taxonomically unique and lack modern analogs. It has long been thought that nonanalog mammalian faunas are limited in North America to areas east of the Rocky Mountains and that late-Pleistocene mammalian faunas in the west were modern in taxonomic composition. A late-Pleistocene fauna from Marmes Rockshelter in southeastern Washington State has no modern analog and defines an area of maximum sympatry that indicates significantly cooler summers than are found in the area today. An earliest Holocene fauna from Marmes Rockshelter defines an area of maximum sympatry, including the site area, but contains a single tentatively identified taxon that may indicate slightly cooler than modern summers.

Biostratigraphic studies of foraminifera were carried out on two exploratory wells drilled in the Eastern Niger Delta to establish the age, biozonation and paleoenvironment of the foraminifera present in the strata penetrated by the wells. A total of 80 ditch cutting samples retrieved at 60ft intervals from AX-1 and AX-2 Wells at the depth of 3,600ft to 6,000ft and 4,200ft to 6500ft. respectively were subjected to micropaleontological analysis which involves picking and identification of the foraminifera present. The resulting data were loaded into the Stratabug software and interpreted. The foraminifera recovered and identified from the two wells are made up of both benthic and planktic species. The marker species, whose stratigraphic range are well established were used to describe the biozonation and these includes Heterostegina sp, Catapsydrax stainforthi, Chiloguembelina victoriana, Orbulina universa/suturalis, Praeorbulina sicana,Buliminella subfusiformis, Nonion centrosulcatum, Catapsydrax dissimilis, Globigerinoides bisphericus and Globigerinoides sicanus. Four biozones of foraminifera made up of N8, N7-N8, N6-N7 and N5-N6 were recognised based on the zonation scheme of Grandstein; with their stratigraphic age ranging from early Miocene to middle Miocene. Furthermore, the environment of deposition prevailing in the Formations penetrated by the two wells are predominantly middle neritic with similarity in their ages as observed from the correlation of the biozones from the two wells

BackgroundProphocaandLeptophocarepresent the oldest known genera of phocine seals, dating from the latest early to middle Miocene. Originally,Prophoca rousseauiandProphoca proximawere described based on fragmentary remains from the Miocene of Belgium. However, several researchers contested the union ofProphoca rousseauiandProphoca proximainto one genus, without providing evidence. The stratigraphic context ofProphocaremained poorly constrained due to the lack of precise data associated with the original specimens collected in the area of Antwerp (north of Belgium).MethodsProphocaandLeptophocaare redescribed and their phylogenetic position among Phocidae is reassessed using PAUP. Dinoflagellate biostratigraphy has been carried out on sediment samples associated with specimens fromProphocaandLeptophocato elucidate their approximate ages.ResultsWhereas the speciesProphoca rousseauiis redescribed,Prophoca proximais considered synonymous toLeptophoca lenis, with the proposal of a new combinationLeptophoca proxima(Van Beneden, 1877). Sediment samples from specimens of both taxa have been dated to the late Langhian–early Serravallian (middle Miocene). Following a reinvestigation ofLeptophoca amphiatlantica, characters from the original diagnosis are questioned and the specimens ofLeptophoca amphiatlanticaare consideredLeptophocacf.L. proxima. In a phylogenetic analysis,Prophoca rousseauiandLeptophoca proximaconstitute early branching stem-phocines.DiscussionLeptophoca proximafrom the North Sea Basin is younger than the oldest known find ofLeptophoca proximafrom North America, which does not contradict the hypothesis that Phocinae originated along the east coast of North America during the late early Miocene, followed by dispersal to Europe shortly after. Morphological features of the appendicular skeleton indicate thatProphoca rousseauiandLeptophoca proximahave archaic locomotory modes, retaining a more prominent use of the fore flipper for aquatic propulsion than extant Phocidae.

The new species, Stenozonium leonardi, the northernmost representative of the Polyzoniidae in western North America and the only one north of the Columbia River, is described from the Olympic Peninsula of Washington; it is isolated by some 180 mi (288 km) from S. benedictae Shelley, 1998, in coastal Oregon. Stenozonium alone among the four polyzoniidan genera in western North America consists of entirely allopatric and widely separated species, with one apiece in California, Oregon, and Washington-evidence that it diversified earlier than its ordinal counterparts.

The milliped genus Amplaria Chamberlin 1941 was synonymized with Striaria Bollman 1888 by Hoffman (1980). Examination of a much wider range of materials of nominal Striaria species both from eastern North America and the Pacific coastal states shows that some species occurring from California to Washington (state) represent a distinct phyletic line, for which Amplaria Chamberlin 1941 is the oldest available generic name. Speostriaria Causey 1960 is a synonym of Amplaria. Amplaria muiri n. sp. and A. adamsi n. sp. are two new, recently discovered species from caves in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, California. Illustrations are provided of a specimen that may represent the type species, Amplaria eutypa (Chamberlin) 1953.

American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis L.) is a common native species in eastern North America and is planted widely as a landscape tree in other regions. During a survey of powdery mildew diseases in Washington State, the fungus Microsphaera platani Howe was found on American sycamore trees in Madison Park, Seattle. This report documents the presence of M. platani in Washington State and presents information on the fungus. Accepted for publication 30 July 2003. Published 18 August 2003.

The Pratt Ferry beds are a three meter thick bioclastic carbonate unit containing thePygodus serrus–P. anserinusconodont zone boundary and lying just below theNemagraptus gracilisgraptolite zone at a single locality in Alabama.TelephinaMarek at Pratt Ferry and other eastern North American localities is represented by at least six species. These are judged widespread and in part conspecific with Scandinavian or Asian forms of similar age. Most of the fifteen Appalachian telephinid species proposed by Ulrich (1930) are reviewed and some synonymized.BevanopsisCooper is present, extending its stratigraphic range viaB. buttsi(Cooper). The original description ofCeraurinella buttsiCooper is augmented. Other recorded but poorly represented genera includeAmpyxina,Arthrorhachis,Calyptaulax,Hibbertia,Lonchodomas,Mesotaphraspis,Porterfieldia, andSphaerexochus. The entire faunule represents a mixture of ‘inshore’ and ‘offshore’ or planktonic faunal elements rarely seen elsewhere in the latest Middle Ordovician (Darriwilian) of eastern North America.
