The document includes the below main trends in development of acoustic non-destructive testing methods in aviation industry: automation and enhancement of the sensitivity the testing, development of Procedures for acoustic non-destructive testing methods for products in case of repair and use of products, probabilistic assessment of the outcomes of the ultrasonic non-destructive testing, mathematic simulation of the ultrasonic non-destructive testing, development of the ultrasonic non-destructive testing by applying state-of-the-art technologies, development of the low-frequency acoustic testing methods, development of a Procedure on training of specialists who conduct NDT. The experience of NRC «Kurchatov institute» – VIAM is pointed out to show an example on the implementation of main trends on ultrasonic testing development.

AbstractThe article is in line with the contemporary interests of companies from the aviation industry. It describes thermoplastic material and inspection techniques used in leading aviation companies. The subject matter of non-destructive testing currently used in aircraft inspections of composite structures is approximated and each of the methods used is briefly described. The characteristics of carbon preimpregnates in thermoplastic matrix are also presented, as well as types of thermoplastic materials and examples of their application in surface ship construction. The advantages, disadvantages and limitations for these materials are listed. The focus was put on the explanation of the ultrasonic method, which is the most commonly used method during the inspection of composite structures at the production and exploitation stage. Describing the ultrasonic method, the focus was put on echo pulse technique and the use of modern Phased Array heads. Incompatibilities most frequently occurring and detected in composite materials with thermosetting and thermoplastic matrix were listed and described. A thermoplastic flat composite panel made of carbon pre-impregnate in a high-temperature matrix (over 300°C), which was the subject of the study, was described. The results of non-destructive testing (ultrasonic method) of thermoplastic panel were presented and conclusions were drawn.

Recently, the interest in maintenance and repair of existing concrete structures have increased, and it is typical to use non-destructive testing methods such as rebound hardness test or ultrasonic pulse velocity method to execute maintenance and repair of structures efficiently. Many non-destructive testing methods are being used in practice such as at construction sites, but verification for site applications are quite inadequate. Thus, this study intends to evaluate the applicability of Impact Echo Method which is one of the non-destructive testing methods using stress wave. Total of four specimens were planned and produced. The thickness of concrete slab members was estimated using I.E(OLSENs Freedom Data PC with Win.TFS Software Version 2.5.2). The estimated materials of concrete members by IE was found to be IE-1 specimen 178mm, IE-2 specimen 197mm, IE-3 specimen 191mm, and IE-4 specimen 263mm, and the error rate was found to be 4.22%~18.67% (average 9.6%), showing that they are relatively well in agreement. In this study, the experiments were executed with the objective of estimating the thickness of concrete slab members using Impact Echo Method. Through this study, the applicability of thickness estimation in concrete slab members using impact echo method could be confirmed.

The estimation of the size and location of defects in multi-layered composite structures by ultrasonic non-destructive testing using guided waves has attracted the attention of researchers for the last few decades. Although extensive signal processing techniques are available, there are only a few studies available based on image processing of the ultrasonic B-scan image to extract the size and location of defects via the process of ultrasonic non-destructive testing. This work presents an image processing technique for ultrasonic B-scan images to improve the estimation of the location and size of disbond-type defects in glass fiber-reinforced plastic materials with 25-mm and 51-mm diameters. The sample is a segment of a wind turbine blade with a variable thickness ranging from 3 to 24 mm. The experiment is performed by using a low-frequency ultrasonic system and a pair of contact-type piezoceramic transducers kept apart by a 50-mm distance and embedded on a moving mechanical panel. The B-scan image acquired by the ultrasonic pitch-catch technique is denoised by utilizing features of two-dimensional discrete wavelet transform. Thereafter, the normalized pixel densities are compared along the scanned distance on the region of interest of the image, and a −3 dB threshold is applied to the locations and sizes the defects in the spatial domain.

This paper deals with the basic research of cyclic damage during the initial stages of fatigue process using the non-destructive testing methods. The acoustic emission method was used for monitoring of the microstructure changes during fatigue loading. The electrical potential measurements of specimen and microscopic observation were used mainly to detect the first short cracks and their propagation. The fatigue tests at room temperature were conducted on titanium alloy and creep-resistant steel specimens under bending and tension loading. The aim of the study was to compare the acoustic emission signal at different types of loading until fracture and to analyze in detail the signal changes in initial stages of fatigue process. This analysis was primarily based on the waveform similarity and division into classes. The results show the high sensitivity of the acoustic emission technology in the transition from the stage of surface relief evolution to the stage of crack nucleation and propagation.
